25.01.2022 Explicit instruction and phonics are the key to becoming a successful reader. https://theconversation.com/why-every-child-needs-explicit-

25.01.2022 My students love to feed Hungry Harry... But be careful! He only likes to eat rhyming words

24.01.2022 A Current Affair had a segment last night on kids with dyslexia and interviewed Kate Finnie who is one of the MSL trainers in Australia. Her and author Jackie French, who is also dyslexic emphasised the importance of early intervention. https://9now.nine.com.au//cceb4d2d-1eb9-4f83-a218-9769d310

23.01.2022 Reading stories to children can greatly build their language and literacy skills. There are several great sites where you can have the kids listen to some lovely storytimes for either free or next to nothing. https://storyboxlibrary.com.au/ https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/stories/storytime

22.01.2022 Working on onset and rime during my online sessions with Woody and Buzz.

21.01.2022 Not directly related to dyslexia, but some food for thought. Getting kids to draw instead of handing them an ipad gives them the opportunity the plan new ideas and put them on paper. This is the skills they need when it comes to writing stories. It's also a first step to learning how to hold a pencil which will be required when they start school. Reading a book with them helps them learn important literacy skills and build excitement about books. https://www.mostwatchedtoday.com/nature-valley-rediscover-/

21.01.2022 Might give these a go for some of my coming MSL sessions. Also a great idea for those rainy days for parents to play at home with the kids.

20.01.2022 Mark this in the calendar to watch

19.01.2022 My students are loving my new literacy goodies. #Talisman books make for an exciting read and then we finish off the session with a round of Strawberry Smash #KendoreLearning.

17.01.2022 School has started and for many young prep students that marks the beginning of a new big adventure. Parents hope that their little ones will learn many new new things in the coming years. One of them we want them to master is how to read and write. Pam Snows blog is a great resource on what to look out for when it comes to giving them the best start in literacy.

17.01.2022 Free decodable readers for download. These are great for young readers developing their skills.

16.01.2022 Get the 'Teach your monster how to read' app... FREE! https://apps.apple.com/app/id828392046

15.01.2022 Shared from Dyslexia Victoria Support group, please contact Belinda Dekker if interested: As you may have seen I often post films my daughter has made. She writes scripts, directs and edits. She has decided to make a film about dyslexia for October awareness month. She needs your help. She would like kids to film themselves talking about how dyslexia has affected them. What has helped. What has been hard. What has been good. She will collate all the clips, edit and put them ...together. She also has dyslexic friends to film. Depending on how many she gets I can’t promise your child’s clip will be in there! 1. Needs to be in landscape 2. No school uniforms that identify the child 3. Filmed against a blank wall. 4. She said quality does not matter. Using a phone to film is ok as long as it’s in landscape. 5. If you could get these to me by 10th October that gives her time to edit and release in time Please pm your films to me so they don’t get lost in this thread. If you send a film to me I assume you give permission for it to be used and released publicly. I will post it here and on dyslexia awareness australia which is a public page. Erika also has a you tube channel so it will be uploaded in a public space. If you want to see what she does you can look up her you tube channel. This is a trailer of her you tube channel https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=FnVJu4fH5-0

15.01.2022 This latest documentary "Our children dyslexic children" gives insight in the struggles children with dyslexia and their families go through. Watch it for free on youtube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ7xa6meD2Q

14.01.2022 Can't wait for lockdown to end to read these awesome decodable fact books with my students in person #soundswrite

12.01.2022 Early Childhood is NOT School. [This post says hold off the 'teaching' of reading, not the 'catching' of reading. Big difference.] Reading is an important skill..., no argument there. Yet teaching reading BEFORE the brain has finalised its ’specialist features’ for processing symbols and code with ease is not a good idea. When a child attempts a set task and fails, he is less likely to revisit the task with curiosity and joy in future, and much more likely to perceive himself as a poor learner. The difference in girls’ and boys’ development means that statistically, the children who fail in early literacy instruction are mostly boys. This is not what we want for our boys, it alters their perception of themselves as learners. Research shows that children who succeed in learning are the children who perceive themselves as able learners. Seven is the ideal age to begin formal learning in literacy and numeracy. I know, we in New Zealand start at 5 and many children (mostly boys) end up in the Reading Recovery programme at six. They are recovering from OUR inability to match their biology with our curriculum. It is true that some children learn to read without instruction, just as some children walk earlier than others. That is not the issue here, The issue is reserving the early childhood years for MUCH MORE IMPORTANT skills we humans require for our Wellbeing as a social animal. The easiest time to learn ‘people skills’ starts at the moment of birth up to seven years. Here’s a short list: learning to make friends initiating play for themselves and with others being able to engage and lose themselves in play managing their emotions, growing their self regulation growing skills for dealing with conflict growing their empathy and kindness growing their ability to communicate their needs and wants. Click on the link and scroll on down for my article Getting Ready for School which looks at this in more detail: https://penniebrownlee.weebly.com/articles.html

11.01.2022 Merry Christmas to everyone. Looking forward to seeing all of you in the new year.

11.01.2022 Some Lego fun to learn contraction words.

10.01.2022 Exciting things are happening! After hearing how many of my students experienced difficulties with maths I decided to learn more about OG (multisensory) maths to be able to help. 36 I'm all equipped now to offer services for children who struggle with maths or have #dyscalculia. ... Please contact me if you have any questions.

09.01.2022 I often get asked which apps are useful for children with literacy difficulties. One I never recommend is Reading Eggs. Reason being that it doesn't follow any of the vowel pairs or digraph rules MSL teaches. They also had a recent hiccup when they 'updated' their app and appeared to look a lot like 'Nessy'. 'Nessy' is a great tool to teach struggling children as it follows spelling rules and builds their skills slowly. Another go to app would be 'Teach your monster how to ...read'. https://www.theage.com.au//experts-warn-popular-abc-readin See more

07.01.2022 Finally finished the literacy tree with the help of my students. All MSL rules on one beautiful tree. Good work everyone!

07.01.2022 A shout out to all my families and young clients for being so amazingly supportive during the last few weeks. It has been a challenging time that required everyone to be flexible and to adapt quickly to new technology. Congratulations to you all for doing an amazing job! Thank you for your ongoing support!

04.01.2022 Great gift from my student. Will go on my artwork wall

03.01.2022 One of the favourite games my students play to practice the /k/ or /ck/ rule

03.01.2022 Love it when a session starts with a gift from one of my students. Nothing says 'I enjoy my MSL sessions' more than this colourful picture

02.01.2022 Due to the changes caused by COVID-19 I have had to stop all face-to-face sessions. All MSL sessions are now delivered via an online video conferencing software (Zoom). I am sure, many of you wonder if you child will benefit from this new and hopefully temporary way of therapy. The answer is :YES Telehealth/therapy has been a reliable and effective alternative to deliver services to remote areas even before COVID-19.... The sessions are presented in a similar way to the previous face-to-face sessions with small adaptations to fit the online format. The main difference are some new and fun games for the students which I am sure they enjoy So until everything is back to normal, I hope to see you online. Stay safe everyone

01.01.2022 Teaching long O sounds to a little Lego fan.
