21.01.2022 'Her own path' tells the stories of five early 20th century women, who each have a strong connection to Bayside, and were among the first professional women artists to emerge in Australia. They were all trailblazers in their own way and achieved levels of success in their craft through innovation and tenacity in a male-dominated world. This week meet Jessie Traill (1881-1967)... Jessie Traill was born in Brighton to a wealthy family, the Traills soon moved to Sandringham which was mostly undeveloped bush at the time. She was one of the first women to practice printmaking in Australia and was crucial in the promotion of Australian printmaking. 02.01.2022 'Her own path' tells the stories of five early 20th century women with a strong connection to Bayside who were among the first professional women artists to emerge in Australia. This week's (trailblazing) artist in focus is Margaret Baskerville (18611930) Margaret Baskerville studied design, painting and sculpture at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and later at the Royal College of Art, London. On her return to Australia in 1906, Baskerville’s reputation as an outstan...ding sculptor grew and she is considered the first professional women sculptor in Australia as she was awarded the public commission to create a statue of Sir Thomas Bent which is located on the corner of Nepean Hwy and Bay Street, Brighton.
