25.01.2022 Fantastic news!!
25.01.2022 Whilst the comment period has closed, you can still keep the pressure up to help achieve a better, community-focused outcome for the Baysie town centre. Simply email the relevant pollies and let them know what your feelings are on the DevelopmentWA guidelines. Lisa Baker: [email protected] Rita Saffioti: [email protected] Tony Buti: [email protected]... Bayswater Deserves Better commissioned a great report from DesignEL on the proposed guidelines for the town - take a look here: https://www.dropbox.com//Preliminary%20Report%202021-Baysw
25.01.2022 We applaud all efforts to stand up and speak out when something is wrong. And there is plenty wrong with the initial design of the Baysie train station. The difference here is that RBHH advocate for effectively lobbying government - as a collective, and as individual community members - to affect a better outcome for Bayswater. Our state government are investing a large amount of infrastructure spending in our town, let's try and work WITH them to achieve a better result. We are really looking forward to seeing the next round of design changes presented to the CAG in September.
23.01.2022 The latest version of the town centre fly-through, showing what density at 20 metres might look like is available to view now. This has been prepared by DesignEL and commissioned by Bayswater Deserves Better. We should be seeing another one, showing the town centre at the maximum heights specified in the draft guidelines, very soon.
22.01.2022 Friends of heritage - the council election ballot papers are out now and we encourage everyone to vote! And whilst we won't tell you how to vote, we would encourage everyone to ask those running in your ward what their position on heritage preservation is, and choose who to give your vote to with care. We can see many of these prospective councillors aligned with the development lobby (often it's very apparent by looking at their post comments on Facebook) which is somewhat alarming. We want our City council to be made up of representatives that put COMMUNITY first, not developers.
22.01.2022 DevelopmentWA have a survey out to ascertain what the people of Bayswater want to see prioritised as part of their project plan for the town centre. Click through and complete a survey, and ask them to put heritage first!
21.01.2022 From today's edition of the Eastern Reporter features an article regarding the DevelopmentWA survey which is out now. If you haven't seen or done the survey yet, please look further down our page for the link. To ensure fulsome community opinion, we need everyone to feed into it.
19.01.2022 Respect to the people of Nedlands for raising their voices and speaking out against these issues. Great things can happen when people mobilise and speak out. We at RBHH are always looking for people to join us in writing letters, attending meetings and engaging others.
19.01.2022 Hot of the press this morning. With gratitude to our council for making a statement at their meeting this week.
19.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who read our recent post about the Bayswater Town Centre Structure Plan going before the WA Planning Commission, particularly those of you who sent in a written deputation. We hear that a "very large number" of submissions were received and despite us missing their set deadline for inclusion, they combined them all and included them on the day regardless. Well done, it was fantastic to see the community speaking out on the importance of respecting the chara...cter of our town centre. The draft minutes of the meeting are up on the website for your review. We encourage everyone to read them. It doesn't appear that the revised structure plan was formally approved at this meeting, but the committee has requested that the City make a number of changes before resubmitting the plan for approval. Ryan Keys from DevelopmentWA attended the meeting and we are slightly buoyed by this comment he made: "... that DevelopmentWA will base their approach on ensuring the character of Bayswater is reflected in the core area." Let's all hope for a good outcome for the remaining heritage in our town centre.
17.01.2022 Meanwhile in Subiaco.... a development in DevelopmentWA's R-AC0 zone has been knocked back for a second time by council. The zoning allows for developments up to 6 storeys and 22.5m high. Here's hoping that the height limit applied to the heritage core of the Baysie town centre is a bit more modest.
17.01.2022 Bayswater Primary School's 125th anniversary is coming up and to celebrate, they're holding an event on Sunday 24 November. Bayswater Historical Society will be putting on a display of Bayswater Primary School memorabilia at the event, inside the school library. #bayswaterhistoricalsociety #bayswaterhistory #bayswaterreunion
17.01.2022 September 15th is the deadline for comments and submissions regarding the draft redevelopment guidelines that have been put out by DevelopmentWA for our town centre. We urge all of our followers to make a submission, even if it's only short! This document will guide the planning framework for the town centre, particularly where lots are being rezoned to R-AC0. https://developmentwa.com.au//metropolitan-redevelopment-a
16.01.2022 Here's a great little article worth a read, and if you have a bit more time, tune in to the podcast, too.
15.01.2022 The City is in the throes of the first stages of developing it's new strategic community plan. Part of this process is some community workshops to talk about ideas and priorities. We encourage you ALL to sign up and be an advocate for heritage and therefore our sense of place to be preserved and invigorated. Here's the link!
13.01.2022 THIS IS IT, FOLKS. On Tuesday morning, the Western Australian Planning Commission will be meeting to review and likely approve the revised structure plan for the Bayswater town centre. This revised plan recommends higher density up to 10 storeys. We need you now like we’ve never needed you before.... We ask for all likers of this page to visit the link below and complete an online deputation. We are a bit late we just heard about this unfortunately but IT MUST BE ASAP. Even if your submission is one line long, it’s better than nothing, and PROVES that there is a voice out there other than Future Bayswater’s pro-development one. Please act now. https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au//request-for-deputation-present Suggested comments you could use: I support the protection of the heritage core of the Bayswater town centre I support development outside of the core area of the Bayswater town centre I do not support development of more than four storeys in the historic Bayswater town centre core area I support human scale development in the Bayswater Town Centre I support higher density development around the station precinct, but not within the core King William St/Whatley Cres heritage heart of the town centre You can write "resident" in the Organisation field. The Agenda Item number is SPN/2145, the title is BAYSWATER TOWN STRUCTURE PLAN Committee is the Statutory Planning Committee In one of the empty fields, write "Written submission only" - you don't have to attend. If you have the time to write a full submission, please do! For your info: The WAPC have changed the 10 precincts identified in the structure plan to 2! Core and Frame being the two designated areas. The department does not believe that the town structure plan has enough residential density, that the building height limits are insufficient in scale and suggest rezoning to R-CA0. The report states that the station will be 27 metres high (equivalent to an 8-9 storey building). It will only be 12 - 13 metres high (equivalent to a 3-4 storey building). Highlight the COB endorsement of a heritage area, the need for sensitive human scale development and respecting this heritage core! We believe that the development lobby have been submitting en-masse to prove that the majority of the Bayswater residents support higher density.
13.01.2022 For anyone interested in seeing how council voted on the demolition application lodged by Yolk Property Development for 9 & 11 King William St, here's screenshots from the meeting minutes. Full minutes here: https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//ordinary-council-meeting-
12.01.2022 We’ve been called plenty of names over the past few years. Sadly, some people think that name calling and bullying behaviour is okay and a great way to score points. One very recent accusation made particularly rankled Metronet puppets. For the record, we would like to make our position on the Bayswater train station very clear. A quick look further down our page will show a post we made recently regarding our opinion of the design before the community at this time. Howev...er, we firmly believe that when it comes to achieving a positive outcome, finding a way to work WITH government via Metronet is the best way to do things! RBHH has a group representative on the current incarnation of the Community Advisory Group (CAG). We admire and respect each of the residents on the CAG who are devoting their time to ensure all voices are heard and respected. RBHH feel that working in a positive way, proactively pushing for a station and surrounding precinct that is sympathetic and respectful of our town’s heritage context is the way to go. We might not get our own way on this project, but we will be giving it a red-hot go, and at the very least we will have done our utmost to influence change the right way.
11.01.2022 We have heard that DevelopmentWA received more than 400 responses from the community about their draft plan for the town centre. If yours was one of them, then thank you, and well done!
11.01.2022 Hats off to our friend Kieran at Sunsets not Skyscrapers. Make no mistake, a Gold Coast in Bayswater is what the developer cheer squad are waving their pom poms for. One of our major concerns is obviously none of this is abiding by what was spruiked to the public, he said. Development WA should be standing up and tell them: ‘look, sorry boys this doesn’t fit our guidelines’.
10.01.2022 Interesting blog post from Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt regarding the heritage significance of a 1956 built building in North Fremantle, and ultimately, it's retention. We have heard plenty of voices claiming that because all of the buildings in the Baysie heritage heart are not on the City's heritage inventory, they should not be retained. We would argue that the majority of remaining buildings in the town centre are intrinsic to the identity of our town from both a historic and aesthetic point of view.
10.01.2022 Interesting article in today's West with comment from a respected commentator.
10.01.2022 Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure. However we're pretty sure nobody would have fallen for this attempt!
10.01.2022 So... the proposed Bayswater train station. What do you think about it? If you find it bulky, overpowering, and in complete contrast with our town centre, we agree! We encourage all of our page followers to write to the powers that be and let them know what you think. And to do that, we've made the job easier for you if you aren't sure where to start. Visit the page on our website, http://www.respectbayswater.com/bayswater-station, and click the link at the bottom of the page for some suggestions you can cut and paste, or adapt. If we don't act, nothing will change. And it's our Baysie after all, isn't it?
08.01.2022 Today, the Metronet East Redevelopment Scheme, taking in Bayswater, was released for comment by DevelopmentWA. Please have a read through as and when you can. The public comment period is open now until 15 September.
07.01.2022 WA Today ran a series of interesting articles last year on the tangled web relating to developers here in WA. There are links to other articles at the bottom of the page, too.
06.01.2022 News just in - the City of Bayswater has just uploaded the agenda for their Heritage Advisory Committee meeting on 12 Feb. At the meeting, they will consider what they are referring to as the former Municipal Heritage Inventory. There is a recommendation of note in there: 5. Requests that the City do not proceed with the development of heritage area design guidelines for Bayswater town centre and work with Development WA to ensure heritage considerations are incorporated into any design guidelines they develop Download your copy and have a read. And tell us what you think!
02.01.2022 Check the current edition (print only at this stage) of the Eastern Reporter for an article about the Bayswater Station design debacle. Helpfully scanned here!
