19.01.2022 The Bayswater Rocks Lacrosse Masters team have just completed the Hawaii Lacrosse Tournament in Honolulu and we checked in with mainstay and net minder Charles ...Manning to recap the experience..... Lacrosse in paradise! Aloha. You’ve heard it all before, palm trees, white sandy beaches with warm crystal clear water. maybe, but it doesn’t come any more perfect than Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, on fields right under Diamond Head, metres from the surf. This amazing tournament is in its 27th year, we first played here two years ago and shared in the celebration of the 25th anniversary, with Gary Gait playing in our Masters Division and the Thompson brothers playing in an Iroquois Team in the Elite Division. Bayswater Rocks is a team organised by Michael Gates, and has been playing in tournaments around the world for many years now, Canada, Manchester, Auckland, Denver, Hong Kong and Hawaii to name some of the places we’ve played. This years team was made up of regulars from Bayswater including Shane Taylor, Rob Morriss, along with guys from other clubs including Cameron Blair, Jason Ridgwell and Troy Haskett, with Adelaide players Mike Elliss, Gary Munn, Paul D Young and myself, Charles Manning. We had one player from San Diego too, Richard Lucera. Look back to 1980 Perth, Michael and Murray Gates’ family billeted me when I was 14 years old, visiting with the Under 16 Lacrosse SA State Team. We have been friends ever since, playing against each other in 16's, 19's and Senior’s. When they invited me to join the Bayswater Rocks team for the World Masters in Manchester 2010 a whole new world of lacrosse and friendships opened up. Hawaii has been probably one of the best, it is very relaxed in so many ways, from the pace of living to the way the games are officiated and played. Teams from the West Coast of the USA and Canada regularly return for this event with Elite, Masters, Grand Masters and Legends divisions for the men and an open division for Women. Games are played in fun spirits with many guys volunteering to play extra games to help out teams that are short. Played Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Halloween time of year, it is always finished off with a huge Halloween dress up party at Lulu’s Bar and Grill, a beach view venue that closes to the public for this tropical evening filled with making friends, admiring the amazing costumes and dancing the night away to tunes of some local live talent. From here, first timers will spend a few days exploring Oahu, those return visitors to Hawaii take time to visit the other islands of Maui, Hawaii (the Big Island) and Kuai. Michael Gates is heading on to San Diego to meet lacrosse friends and watch sport. Many of us had our partners come too, I know my wife Janice is always happy to come to a lacrosse trip to Hawaii!! These tournaments create friends from around the world. We have guys on our squad from across the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the UK. Right now we are planning for our defence of our Bronze Medal wins at Manchester and Denver heading to Israel for the Worlds next year. This tournament is a perfect one for many Australian players to consider. It is just off the back of our regular season and with discount flights you can get to Honolulu for around $900 return. There are dozens of hotels within 500m of the grounds and plenty of fun along this world famous tourist beach and island. If you can’t get a whole team together the organisers will often help you find a pick up team, many who are keen for extra players. Playing lacrosse against guys your own age had allowed many of us to continue to enjoy our love of this amazing game and sustain life long friendships. I know North Adelaide Lacrosse Club is planning to visit in 2018 and I would advise them to register for the Legends Division, given the number of players they have over 45 going, the organisers and other teams are very understanding to teams with a few players not meeting the age criteria and just want more teams to come enjoy the game in Hawaii.
