23.01.2022 Today Victoria Police have launched Operation Safeguard calling on all Victorians to please be aware of activities you do throughout summer which may cause fires. Careless behaviour could lead to causing a bushfire with devastating consequences. Take extra care this fire season when lighting recreational fires like campfires, conducting burn-offs or using machinery. Keeping our communities safe from bushfire is a shared responsibility.

18.01.2022 It's especially important in times like this where we are separated from those we care about to stop and ask "R U OK". Give someone a call, or have a zoom coffee. Just remember, there's more to say after "R U OK". Learn what to say at ruok.org.au... Let's look after each other and get through this together.

17.01.2022 Each week we introduce some members of our Brigade to the community. In this week, we start with Matt, an aspiring photographer and storm chaser. We've included one of his works here to share with everyone :) Name: Matt Lamont Role: Firefighter Length of service: 6.5 years... I joined the CFA to fill in time while I was at home studying as I needed something to do to keep me occupied. I was a little down in the dumps and joining the CFA was exactly what I needed to give me purpose and drive to make myself better ? I enjoy the comradery the most at Bayswater. Having a community of people that are there to talk to, to have your back at a fire call or to simply play Uno at the fire station means a lot to me. Most of my family lives interstate so I’m glad to have the Brigade to turn to. We all pitch in to make the Brigade what it is, and no one gets left behind. The best thing about CFA is being able to give back to the community in times of need. ? Up until recently what I did outside CFA was CFA as I was able to start my career at CFA Headquarters completing Fire Incident Reports. I have been working at CFA for 4 years now. In my spare time (when I’m lucky enough to get it) I am an aspiring photographer and storm chaser. I love to showcase the wild weather that nature has to offer. I have even travelled to Tornado Alley to see Tornadoes. ? I have learnt many skills during my short stay at Bayswater. Some are teamwork, leadership, being able to work under pressure, as well as being able to engage the community to deliver the important safety messages. The most important skill I have learnt is being able to work with people in a range of expertise. I am especially lucky to be able to have used the foundation of knowledge that Bayswater CFA has given me to build my career in emergency management. ? 1. Leave Early Leaving early in the case of a bushfire/bad fire weather day is always the safest option. 2. Ensure you have working smoke alarms It has been shown over and over again that smoke alarms save lives 3. Have a household fire escape plan especially if you have children. You can download a fire escape plane from the CFA Website My last little piece of advice is to always check the Fire Danger ratings before travelling into regional Victoria. , !

17.01.2022 Last night Bayswater Breathing Apparatus responded to support Lilydale CFA at a fire at KFC Also supporting on scene Coldstream CFA Fire Brigade, Chirnside Park Fire Brigade - CFA and Mt Evelyn Fire Brigade. #WeWorkAsOne

16.01.2022 With students going back to school this week take care in and around schools zones and stick to the 40kph speed limit. Children are our most vulnerable road users Motorists should be aware that children in traffic are not like adults. They can be unpredictable and because they are small, they can be hard to see. So take extra care and slow down when you drive past any school.

16.01.2022 Each week we introduce some members of our Brigade to the community. In this week, we start with Aimee, who started her CFA journey as a Junior member. Name: Aimee Stride Role: Firefighter, Length of service: 4.5 years... ? My mum has been a CFA member for 15 years, so when the opportunity came for me to join as a junior in 2009 I saw it as something that I would really enjoy and maybe even follow in my mum's footsteps. I then joined as an adult member in 2019 because I wanted to get more involved with my community and provide help and education where I can. ? I enjoy helping out the community and Meeting & interacting with new people. / ? I work in administration at a learning centre. I also spend a lot of my time going to music festivals, camping with my friends, and hanging out with my partner and family. ? I’ve learned that you should never stop learning and developing your skills not only in CFA but in life. ? 1. Always make sure your campfire is out before going to bed. 2. DONOT flick cigarettes out of your car window. 3. Don’t leave candles unattended near flammable items. , !

15.01.2022 Everyone in Victoria who lives near dense forest, bush, grassland or the coast needs to prepare their property for bushfire. Below are some tips from Captain Koala on preparing your property: Roof gutters - Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter. Leaf litter in guttering is a ember ignition point. Keep grass short - Keep grass cut to less than 10cm. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. Mowing and slashing can greatly reduce fine fuel levels.... Leaves and Twigs - Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark. Less fuel = less fire. Prune shrubs -Prune lower branches of shrubs to separate from surface fuels underneath. Prune shrubs well away from branches of mature trees. Cut back branches - Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property no branches in 10m space. For more information on preparing your property please see here: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare #CKDoesSummerPreparation #LessFuelEqualsLessFire #PlanAndPrepare #CleanUpBeforeABushfireDoes

06.01.2022 Today is the 38 year anniversary of the Ash Wednesday bushfires. On the 16th February 1983, within just 12 hours the Ash Wednesday bushfires caused widespread destruction across Victoria and South Australia where more than 180 fires were fanned by strong winds coupled with a sudden and violent wind change in the evening which rapidly changed the direction and size of the fire front. Tragically 75 lives were lost (47 in Victoria and 28 in South Australia) which included 17 bra...ve volunteer firefighters (14 CFA (Country Fire Authority) and 3 SA Country Fire Service). Over 3,700 buildings were destroyed or damaged and 2,545 individuals and families lost their homes. The emergency saw the largest number of volunteers called to duty from across Australia at the same time with an estimated 130,000 firefighters, defence force personnel, relief workers and support crews. 02.01.2022 Each week we introduce some members of our Brigade to the community. The second member we introduce this week is Jordan, who also came through CFA's junior program. Name: Jordan Sinclair-Geldard Role: Firefighter Length of service: 15 years... ? My father was the 4th Lieutenant at Sassafras Ferny Creek CFA so I had spent a lot of time around the brigade from a very young age and they were (and still are) like a second family. When I was 11 I joined the junior brigade and moved on to being a senior member when I was 16. ? Over the last 15 years, I have learned many new skills and the brigade has always been a big part of my life. The diversity of people that you work with is amazing. Bayswater is particularly good at encouraging young people to move up and progress. / ? I have transferred my CFA skills to a career I work as an Emergency Services Officer at an underground mine in north-west QLD. On my time off I am usually out in the bush on a motorbike, 4x4, skis or hiking. ? Apart from emergency response skills, the CFA has allowed me to grow my leadership, training and management skills. ? Have a fire plan and practice it with your family Check your BBQ gas bottle connection Put out your campfire cool to touch, cool to leave , !

02.01.2022 Each week we introduce some members of our Brigade to the community. From this week, we also start to introduce our Support Team (non-operational) members, who support the administration, community engagement, the junior program, logistics and other business of the Brigade. In this week, we start with April :) Name: April Williams Role: Support Team member (Social Team Leader) Length of service: 6 years... ? My husband (a firefighter) had been in the CFA for nearly 7 years at the time and had recently transferred to the Bayswater brigade. The brigade had a family and community feel about it that I loved, so I started getting involved in activities in the brigade. The Captain at the time approached me and asked me to become a member, mentioning that I was actually already carrying out tasks of a Non-Operational member. And with little convincing, I took up her offer to join the CFA at Bayswater. ? I have been volunteering in various ways since I was at school and love being able to give to the community through acts of service. I saw CFA as another way to be able to continue to do that. I have also been able to get involved in different areas of CFA in the brigade from being a Juniors Leader, to Community Education as well as other support roles within our Brigade that allow me the chance to use my skill set outside of the everyday job that I love but otherwise wouldn’t get to use very often. / ? I work in a not-for-profit as a Finance Manager, as well as run my own small business. In addition, I am a wife and mother of 2. I also volunteer in the area in other ways. One of my favourite things to do is spending time with my family, eating out and holidaying together when we can. ? While I was a Juniors Leader, I got to do my First Aid training. I have also been able to do Food Handlers training. Even as a Non-Operational Member (meaning I am a support member, rather than a Fire Fighter), I have still been able to complete training and build on my current skills. ? Have a fire plan. It is important, and even if you don’t have to use it, it is better to be prepared and able to evacuate safely and calmly than in a panic with no plan. Having a working smoke alarm and remembering to change the batteries, really does save lives. Follow your local fire brigade. On Facebook or however. They always have something to share that you won’t have known before or that can be helpful in your everyday, as well as emergency situations. It is also nice to see what they get up to at Fire Calls. , !

01.01.2022 The Captain, officers and members of Bayswater Fire Brigade would like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas. 2020 has had its challenges, but we all got through it together as a community. Please stay safe if you are travelling today. Organize an alcohol and drug free designated driver to insure you and your loved ones arrive alive. Merry Christmas

01.01.2022 Although we have had a milder summer, it is important Victorians remain vigilant about the risks posed by grassfires. This week, temperatures across most of the state will be in the 30s, drying out grasslands and scrub. If you live next to grasslands and a fire breaks out, walk at least two streets back. If you live more than two streets from grasslands stay at home, keep windows and doors closed with towels covering any gaps and turn off your air conditioner. ... 01.01.2022 Each week we introduce some members of our Brigade to the community. In this week, we start with Linda, who is the leader of the Brigade Support team. Name: Linda King Role: Brigade Support Team Leader Length of service: 16 years (7 years as firefighter and 9 years in Brigade support)... ? I joined as my husband was already a member and spent lots of time at the Brigade. My husband suggested I should join as well. My first thought was I can't do that. I was wrong. I was an operational member for 7 years before changing to a brigade support member due to starting a family. ? I love all the friends I have made. The other members at Bayswater CFA have become lifelong friends. The type of people who you can call at 3am to help you break into your house when you lock yourself out (true story). / ?
