14.01.2022 Historic Heartbeat Series: During the 1904-1908 Bayswater "boom time there were increases in population growth and building construction. Houses that were built were much more substantial, built of weatherboard as well as brick. And while corrugated iron continued to be used as a cladding material, it was used to clad only sections of a house and not the whole dwelling. According to an estimate by the public works department in 1905, Bayswater was home to an estimated 400 houses and about 1,400 residents.

This book and other items are available for purchase at the next Halliday House Open Day. Sunday 25 October 2020 ... 11am to 3pm. Entry with a gold coin donation. 114 King William Street Bayswater

11.01.2022 It’s National Reconciliation Week - a time for all of us to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can cont...ribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia, Western Australia and the City of Bayswater. Taking place from 27 May to 3 June each year, Reconciliation Week commemorates two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey - the 1967 referendum acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Reconciliation is about strengthening the relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. This year’s theme ‘in this together’ reminds us that in a crisis or in reconciliation, we’re #InThisTogether2020 At City of Bayswater we are committed to acknowledging, sharing and celebrating the cultures of our First Peoples. While our planned events are on hold, we’ll be sharing elements of our reconciliation journey online throughout this week, including reflections from members of our Reconciliation Advisory Committee. I encourage you to jump onto our website and spend a moment reading those. They are insightful and special. Find out more here https://bit.ly/2zuNDry #mybaysie #heartoftheinnereast

11.01.2022 Did you know that Halliday House was built in 1892 by Henry Thomas Halliday? It was originally named Leighton in honour of his wife Edith’s hometown in England, Leighton-Buzzard in Bedfordshire. Leighton is inscribed on the stained-glass panel and also on a brass plate at the front entrance. You can find out more about this magnificent homestead during our Open Day. Sunday, 27th September... 11am - 3pm 114 King William Street Bayswater COVID-19 safety measures will be in place and must be adhered to by all visitors to the house.

09.01.2022 Historic Heartbeat Series: The early 1904-1908 was a boom time for Bayswater. The first commercial building was built in 1905 by well-respected and highly productive early citizen, Henry Halliday. It was built in what is today regarded as the historic town centre on the corner of King William Street and Whatley Crescent. In 1906, Robert McLeish built the two-storey building on the corner of King William and Murray Streets. Mr McLeish also ran a very successful grocery store ...and butcher shop in Coode Street for the three years prior. Bert Wright Senior can be seen standing in the doorway of the building watching passing traffic of horses and carts, and the odd motor car. Photos: Bayswater Historical Society Collection

09.01.2022 A little-known piece of Bayswater history

09.01.2022 Our Society Secretary Glen Cookson along with local resident Damien Hassan met with Mayor Dan Bull, Councillor Lorna Clarke and Councillor Giorgia Johnson from City of Bayswater for an opportunity to discuss the possibility of creating a memorial to acknowledge the site of the International Latitude Station - a scientific and historic significance here in Bayswater!

08.01.2022 From time to time, the Bayswater Historical Society is approached and sent memorabilia and information only to have to let our correspondents know we're in Bayswater, Western Australia. Rather than Bayswater, London, New South Wales or other parts of the world. Recently, we were sent a pretty hand coloured lithographic image of Paddington Train Station. So we thought, as Bayswater, W.A. is in the midst of the design and building of a major transport hub, why not share this lo...vely image sent to us from James Gorringe in Kent. As the people of Bayswater consider the prospect of going from the elementary Perth/ Midland railway line, to accomodating the Airport/ Forrestfield link AND the Morley to Ellenbrook link, you could say Bayswater, W.A. is experiencing a growth spurt and growing pains to go with that. So, it's interesting to reflect on other parts of the world, and contemplate and compare the Paddington to Bayswater Station. James informs us the lithograph was drawn in stone by J C Bourne and published in his first edition of views for the Great Western Railway published in 1846. What a great view it is! We hope, with the consultation, design and construction underway, we can be inspired by the view of Bayswater Train Station upon completion of its next evolution. A special thank you to James for permission to use the image for this story.

05.01.2022 Reflect. Respect. Celebrate.

04.01.2022 This incredible family story appeared in the West Australian this week. A short film, 'Spirit of Happiness', based on this unique story, was partially set in Halliday House. As you can see, Halliday House, home base for Bayswater Historical Society, makes a wonderful back drop to this feature story also. The City of Bayswater will be hosting a screening of 'Spirit of Happiness' in the Bayswater Civic Centre soon.

01.01.2022 #InternationalMuseumDay Did you know that the Bayswater Historical Society operates as the Halliday House Heritage Centre that holds an extensive collection of items and images relating to the history of Bayswater? While social distancing and closed doors have certainly restricted access to the collection in recent times, we can still showcase some of the items Halliday House holds for International Museum Day 2020.... #imd2020 #internationalmuseumday2020
