23.01.2022 Victoria needs more public housing. It's as simple as that. The public housing waiting list has totally blown out, with 100,000 Victorians waiting for a home. ...Tens of thousands of people are homeless every night. We’re at this point because public housing has been neglected by both Labor and Liberal governments for decades. Before the last election, the Andrews Labor Government committed to build 1,000 new public housing homes by 2022, and yet so far they've only built 57. Just 57 homes. This isn't good enough. We need bold, urgent action. That's why we introduced a bill into Parliament this week that would make it law for the government to build more public housing. Every single person in Victoria should have a place to call home. The Greens want to see a big build of public housing over the coming years, so we can end homelessness and ensure that every Victorian has a roof over their head. The COVID-19 crisis has provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rebuild a better future for Victoria, and access to secure housing for everyone needs to be the first step.
21.01.2022 "As the Morrison government eyes bringing forward tax cuts for high income earners in the October 6 budget, the ABC reports that former Reserve Bank governor Bernie Fraser and former secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet Michael Keating have joined an ad campaign from The Australia Institute in denouncing the move as a largely pointless form of stimulus."
19.01.2022 What does a Green New Deal for Victoria look like? #1 - A big build of 100,000 new public housing homes so everyone can have a place to call home. Combined with... a program of energy efficiency upgrades for everyone, including public housing, a Green New Deal for Housing would create over 10,000 new jobs. #2 - A large-scale build of renewable energy. Building publicly-owned solar, wind and energy storage infrastructure will get us to 100% renewable energy, tackle climate change and reduce power prices for everyone. A renewable energy boom would ensure long-term jobs all across Victoria. #3 - Boost the caring economy by creating more well-paid, secure jobs for nurses, teachers, child care workers, disability carers, mental health workers, and more. This will also help to ensure that everyone in our community can get the care they need. #4 - Restore our natural environment with a BushCare Jobs Blitz to regenerate bushfire-affected areas and protect threatened species. Along with planting 10 million trees over 10 years, our BushCare Blitz would create thousands of jobs for regional communities and young people. #5 - Make Melbourne more liveable with a massive investment in walking, bike riding and public transport. This would cut traffic and carbon emissions, and create thousands of jobs in construction and long-term jobs for transport workers. #6 - Revive our vibrant local shopping strips to support small businesses and create jobs for people in retail, hospitality, the service sector and the arts. #7 - Revolutionise our recycling industry by building recycling factories right here in Victoria, and developing innovative ways to use recycled materials. This would create ongoing manufacturing, transport and construction jobs, and help us protect our oceans, rivers and environment. 15.01.2022 Vale Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg fought for abortion rights, equal pay, fairer justice and against gender discrimination in the military - a strong vo...ice for what was right, even when defeat seemed inevitable. Her passing is devastating news for those her career inspired, the minority groups she spent a lifetime fighting for, and for the progressive movement as a whole. Her courage has blazed a path for progressive women everywhere, and she leaves behind a kinder United States. But that legacy is at risk. Trump will attempt to use this to reshape of the Supreme Court, and change the face of justice in the US. Already, the Republicans are saying they’ll fast track her replacement with someone who will better represent Trump and all he stands for. US progressives must fight this with everything they have. I know they will. #RBG

09.01.2022 What an interesting story. Wouldn't it be great if we could restore our waterways?+
08.01.2022 Brimbank Greens acknowledges that the lands and waters on which we are privileged to live, work and play is land and waters never ceded by its traditional owners, the First Peoples of Australia. We extend our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
07.01.2022 We will do better. From John Hedditch. Great to see the Advisory Committee appointed by Brimbank Council did its job and recommended four names to Council for the new St Albans Leisure Centre replacement.... Sad to say our Taylors Ward Councillors took hold of the process and dropped in their preferred name (3rd in line) over the top of the Advisory Committee top two names - Marin Balluk Centre and Wominjenka Centre. Crs Guidice and Aziz then justified it with some of the worst casual racism heard in years in a Council chamber suggesting a sign above the cafe or a room was a suitable place for those Aboriginal names. Councillors had no notice of the naming change - it happened on the night and shows the lengths some will go to in order to get their way. I understand the Wurundjeri are deeply upset by the process and the subsequent goings on. The Council Administration should be ashamed of the process that it has used to get to this point. There was no need to rush this through before caretaker period kicked in. One can only assume there was political benefit for some in it. The decision should have been left entirely to the new Council after Wurundjeri had sit down time to work it through with their community. That’s my humble opinion. A disgrace.
