25.01.2022 Let's go outside and start counting!

25.01.2022 Proposed changes seriously threaten the ecology of the SA outback. For example, upper livestock maximums will be discarded, the only current measure that prevents over-grazing. Please sign!

23.01.2022 Recently our staff and volunteers spent time propagating from our critically endangered Spiny Daisy population. The plants will be used to replace a few Spiny Daisy plants we lost over the years. We used cuttings, but also sowed some seeds. Previous trials by others in the past showed that the seed rarely germinates, but it doesn't hurt to try, so fingers crossed! In nature, Spiny Daisies mainly reproduce by suckering, but still produces seeds. This project was funded by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.

19.01.2022 El Niño and La Niña are climate phenomena. The oceans switch between these two states roughly every two to seven years. But it depends on the wind and ocean ...conditions across the Pacific Ocean between Australia and South America. Typically, La Niña = cooler and wetter, and El Niño = hotter and drier. We're currently in a La Niña period. However, researchers predict more frequent and stronger El Niño activity in the coming decades up to 35% more activity than previously thought. 19.01.2022 It's turtle breeding season! Please report any sightings.

18.01.2022 Recently we joined the Gerard Country Rangers and did a bird survey on their land. A total of 26 species were recorded in 2 sites, with the endangered Regent Parrot, Dusky Woodswallow and a cooperative pair of Gilbert's Whistlers the highlights of this lovely morning.

17.01.2022 If you are under 25, let Landcare SA know your thoughts through this survey!

16.01.2022 If you wondered if you may have seen Budgies or Cockatiels zooming past in the Riverland lately, you are right! The wetter conditions have brought them south from their usual outback areas. Yesterday I saw 120 Budgies and 19 Cockatiels at Chowilla Station, and they have also been seen around Berri, Loxton, Gluepot and the Pike area. We may not get the numbers pictured below but just getting a few is already great, it has been a few years since they were around in good numbers!

15.01.2022 Today Nigel from the University of New England and Berri Barmera Landcare staff and vollies took down the 5 ant chambers scattered around Wilabalangaloo that were part of the Future Keepers research project that was studying the effects of climate change on ants and soil microbes. We have gathered data for this for the last 2 years and are now looking forward to seeing what the outcomes are!

14.01.2022 To protect our beautiful volunteers at Berri Barmera Landcare, our office and nursery will be temporarily closed at Wilabalangaloo until Tuesday 1 December 2020. The walking trails are still open for your recreational pleasure.

13.01.2022 Recently a wonderful group of volunteers came out to our nursery over a couple of mornings to help us fill tubes with soil for our revegetation scheme. 3000 tubes were filled, and most are now sown in by our regular volunteers. We ended the mornings with a nice morning tea as a thank you. Some people enjoyed it so much they came both mornings!! Big thank you to Jenny, Carole, Linc, Chris, Matt, Vivienne, Peter, Priscilla and Mckenzie, Mary, Shirley, Werner, Heidi, Kim, Netty and Richard for getting this big job done!!!

09.01.2022 Wow, look at all that colour!! I am enjoying it while I can because in the next month or so the Rainbow Bee-eaters will pack up and go back to their overwintering grounds in the north of Australia, New Guinea and parts of Indonesia. I have started to see them fly around in groups, making their familiar prrr prrr prrr sound, so I know it won’t be long now. They are found in our area, where they breed, from around late September till February/March. They don’t build a nest but ...lay their eggs in a tunnel dug in sandy soil. The female does most of the digging, using her bill to dig and her feet to push the loose soil out behind her. The male does his share by bringing insects for her meals. Emancipation at its best! The beautiful long tail streamers are often damaged or lost during the digging. Living up to its name, Rainbow Bee-eaters do eat a lot of bees, but also other insects like wasps and locusts. They are immune to the stings of wasps and bees but do rub of the stinger on a perch. They can spot their prey from 50 meters away and can catch hundreds of bees in a day, so besides being gorgeous, they also play an important role in pest control! See more

03.01.2022 Nothing wrong with a big bootie

02.01.2022 Because no-one ever changed the world without volunteers. Winning entry by our Berri Barmera Landcare Committee Member and valued volunteer, Samantha Hauptman.

02.01.2022 This guide is a bit incomplete, but at least it contains the 2 species found in the Riverland, the Red-capped Robin and the Hooded Robin (one of my favourites in their understated black and white)!
