24.01.2022 Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) is caused by a tight or short lingual frenulum (the membrane that anchors the tongue to the floor of the mouth). The frenulum normall...y thins and recedes before birth. Where this doesn’t happen, the frenulum may restrict tongue mobility. According to La Leche League International, depending on the severity of a tongue tie: A baby may: Be unable to latch on to the breast at all. Be unable to latch on deeply, causing nipple pain and damage. Have difficulties staying on the breast, making a clicking sound as he loses suction. Splutter and choke when coping with fast flowing milk. Breastfeed constantly to get enough milk. Have poor weight gain or need supplementation to maintain adequate weight gain. Be fussy at the breast when the milk flow slows. Develop colic. A mother may experience: Pain during feeds, with damaged nipples. Her nipple may be compressed or distorted into a wedge shape like that of a new lipstick immediately after feeding, often with a stripe at its tip. Engorgement, blocked ducts and mastitis because of ineffective milk removal. Low milk production because of ineffective milk removal. Oversupply if her baby compensates for not being able to breastfeed well by nursing very frequently. Tiredness, frustration and discouragement. A premature end to breastfeeding. If you know or suspect your baby has a tongue tie, seek professional advice and guidance from a lactation consultant and your health care provider. Several treatment options are available and a lactation consultant can help you with positioning and attachment to help ease nursing discomfort while you are weighing your options.

23.01.2022 I have been told from Mother's that this works, and reduces the need for changing bras particularly if you pump at work. https://youtu.be/VwqdT_931Tc

19.01.2022 Did you know that most medications are safe to take while breastfeeding and pumping? Always double check with a lactation consultant or the InfantRisk Center to make sure, but there's rarely a need to stop breastfeeding or to "pump & dump" if medications are approved and taken correctly.
