I think it might change significantly as I work on the painting. I don't usually overplan backgrounds ~ I go with what "feels right" for a particular painting. 18.01.2022 When is a painting finished? I find this to be one of the most difficult questions to answer. I do know that it is usually finished long before I think it is. It's so easy to ruin a painting by adding extra stuff that doesn't need to be there. When I'm not sure if a painting is finished or not I usually put it out of sight for at least a week. With a fresh eye I can then see if it needs anything else. Very often the answer is no. How do you decide if something (be it a painting or something else) is "finished"?

16.01.2022 The early stages of a pastel painting of a gibbon. I don't know about you but I find it interesting to see shots of work as it progresses. There is a point in every painting that I do where I hate it and am convinced that it is never going to work. It seems that this is quite normal thinking on the part of artists (we're a strange lot). I've now learned to worry if I don't get to the "I hate it stage".

15.01.2022 I love this one! I started it a couple of years ago and with one thing or another it kept getting put on the backburner. The idea came from a Canon workshop that I did at Werribee Open Range Zoo. I got to play with some very expensive Canon goodies which was fun. I took some photos of this giraffe with burst mode. When I checked the results this cheeky guy seemed to have known he was the centre of attention. #bbwildart #giraffe #chroma_inc #wildlifeart #atelierinteractive

10.01.2022 One of the most stunning of the big cats, the Snow Leopard is designed for living in cold conditions. It has a soft coat which consists of a dense undercoat that provides excellent insulation and a thick outercoat of hairs about 50mm long. Their large padded paws serve as snowshoes and they even use that magnificent tail to wrap around themselves like a blanket. #bbwildart #artrage5 #wildlifeart #wildlifeartist #leopard #snowleopard

09.01.2022 This is great advice for life in general. How often do we tell ourselves that we "can't do" this or that. We can believe our inner commentary 100%, not even try, and it will be 100% right. 07.01.2022 I did a brief interview with Dindi Live last week. It's part of a local initiative to raise the profiles of local artists, musicians, etc. I'm on about the last 3-4 minutes so you can skip to that if you want. I'm not sure what they did with the sound as it is not in sync at all! It's rather like on of those old dubbed Samurai films

07.01.2022 A brand new palette. For ages I've used a ceramic tile for my palette and apart from it being a bit heavy it worked well. I finally found a more compact wooden palette that I wanted to try. I had to prep it for use which took a little while. Next acrylic painting that I do I'll see how it works in practice. I don't think it will look this pristine for long.

03.01.2022 Perhaps he is contemplating his future. Sadly Orangutans are critically endangered. What is their biggest threat? Humans! Tree clearing and habitat loss as forests are converted to palm oil and timber plantations. 02.01.2022 What an intense stare she has. Zillie is a Southern Cassowary. Did you know that there are actually 3 species of Cassowary? The Southern, the Northern and the Dwarf. The Southern is the only one found in Australia. In a nice change from the norm with birds, the female is larger and more brightly coloured that the male. I captured the reference shot for this painting from a visit to the Melbourne Zoo. #bbwildart #artrage5 #wildlifeart #wildlifeartist #cassowary

01.01.2022 One of my favourite things about painting is how much can be suggested to the viewer rather than explicitly stated. A few well placed strokes of paint provide the eye and brain with enough information to "fill in the details" as it were. It's really all a wonderful illusion. My favourite artists paint in a realistic style but they suggest detail rather than paint detail. It is far, far more difficult to do than you would think. I aspire to be that sort of artist. If you want to know what I mean then check out the work of Jennifer Gennari or Alex Movchun
