This calf needs protection from clostridial disease from the start, and should get this through passive immunity from mum's colostrum. Cattle producers have been giving their cows an annual vaccination about now, to boost their resistance, and help the new-born calf as well. Yarding and vaccinating is a stress on the cows, so it is best done at least three weeks before calving starts.
