22.01.2022 STRESS AND YOUR GUMS Did you know that psychological stress is a risk factor for gum disease? Stress has not only been proven to increase the severity of gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis but it also has shown to decrease the effectiveness of treatment for these conditions. Exposure to chronic stress also leads to biological mechanisms that can result in a decrease in your immune response, causing chronic inflammation.... Stress is something we cannot always avoid (especially during these times!) so we may need to work extra hard on our oral health. Here are our hygiene tips to keep on top of your gum health: Using an electric toothbrush twice daily Flossing or using interdental brushes daily (as recommended by your dentist/hygienist) Regular dental cleans with your dental hygienist or dentist Chat to your dental professional; more frequent dental cleanings at particularly stressful times can be beneficial to maintaining your oral health Remember, your dental health is essential and were here to help! #bcdentalsmile See more

21.01.2022 How often do you clean your tongue? Did you know that at any time, you have about 20 billion bacteria in your mouth consisting of about 1000 known types A certain mixture of bacteria in your mouth is beneficial in creating a healthy and balanced environment. However some of those bacteria can have a negative effect on our oral health, contributing to bad breath - also known as Halitosis... Many of these bacteria are actually found in the pit crevices of your tongue and can appear as a white film. These form compounds which turn into Sulfur byproducts - which causes the bad odour Do you notice this in your mouth? This is where your oral hygiene routine comes in! Gently brush the surface of your tongue (from the back to the front) in addition to flossing and brushing twice daily. Tongue cleaners such as tongue scrapers or those found on the back of the toothbrush can be very effective at removing plaque from the crevices of your tongue Ask your dentist or hygienist at your next check up. There may be other factors such as medications or particular foods which are also contributing to Halitosis All of these can reduce this bacteria, in-turn improving bad breath.. Happy tongue cleaning See more

21.01.2022 Another beautiful mural has been painted in Black Rock. This time its a tribute to our healthcare workers. The artist shows an angelic medic holding the earth above their shoulders weighed down and kneeling on a coronavirus, depicting the burden of responsibility for protecting the world from the coronavirus pandemic. 20.01.2022 Lets talk GRINDING Teeth grinding can increase during stressful times and can lead to a range of problems such as sore jaw muscles, neck and shoulder pain, worn out teeth and even cracked teeth! In order to treat this, We first should figure out if you are a day or night-time grinder.... If you wake up in the morning with tight jaw muscles, it is highly likely you are a night-time grinder. If you feel your muscles are tight after a long day, you may be grinding or clenching during the day. Once you have figured out which you are (may be even both!) We can then accurately explore what the best intervention options are for you; Did you know that an assessment of your jaw and surrounding muscles are part of every routine check-up appointment at bcdental? 20.01.2022 Repost from @the.dentistmom DOUBLE TAP & SHARE with a friend if brushing is a struggle in your house! . .... COMMENT: whats your childs brushing personality? The Do it Yourself The Grabber The Chewer / Biter The Short Attention Span The Wont Even Open The Paste Eater My favorite brushing tip is to let your little one have their own toothbrush. We give Olivia two! One that vibrates and one that plays Baby Shark. We take turns brushing, though its not always easy. And we rotate through new brushes every now and then cuz what toddler doesnt like NEW things?! She likes to chew on them, bite my finger, suck off the toothpaste, and really, REALLY prefers to brush herself. So to the parent thats struggling: Olivia was ALL of these brushing personality traits from the first day we started brushing at 8 mos. At 18 mos, shes finally showing improvement, but we still have our bad days too. If youve been following me from the beginning, youve seen the videos and the progression of Olivias brushing behavior. So I promise, it does get better...though a lot of patience is needed. And your dentist mom me struggles too ! Share your brushing experience below with other parents. See more

17.01.2022 Is working from home causing dental problems? Are your teeth currently touching? Even as you read this caption? An article published in the NY Times describes the increase in teeth clenching and teeth grinding in patients - even those who arent usual grinders. This is seen to be not only due to the stress of the current climate, but also the emergence of working-from-home arrangements causing posture issues.... Did you know poor posture during the day can translate into a grinding problem at night? The articles tips include: Be mindful of your teeth touching; your teeth should not touch during the day Decompress your spine by moving regularly and not staying in the same position for too long Focus on sleep hygiene and make efforts to get a good, restful nights sleep Discuss with your dentist about wearing a night guard or splint to relieve pressure from clenching Does this sound like you? 15.01.2022 Who has tried the Waterpik Water Flosser? Easy and effective, the Water Flosser helps to prevent gum disease and inflammation by flushing away bacteria responsible for gingivitis and other oral infections. Great for those hard-to-reach places and for those who find it difficultwith floss. We find it especially useful for cleaning around orthodontic brackets and crown and bridge work! How does it work?... Water picking directs a stream of water into the mouth and gums and uses the pressure of the water to massage the gums and push the food and bacteria away from the teeth. Is it for me? The Waterflosser can be a great addition to your oral health regime! Make sure to ask how you can incorporate the Waterflosser into your routine at your next hygiene appointment. Comment below! We would love to hear how you incorporate the Water Flossing into your Oral hygiene routine See more
