25.01.2022 Our Senior Book & Paper Conservator Karen showing one way of returning the spine profile to an adhesive binding. Text block has been carefully placed over a wooden form and against a right angle triangle to create the required spine shape. Karen and Amalia are writing up this conservation treatment of an 1850s caoutchouc binding. Will post details here when published.
25.01.2022 Removing surface dirt from a guilded leather cover of a 19th century bookbinding. Using IPA held in suspension of 3% Klucel G. Application by rolling gel gently over leather using magnification and under extraction. Tested leather by micro-sampling fibres and performing a FCA to characterise and assess level of degradation at the fibre level and hydrophobic resistance to solvent treatment without need to perform shrinkage test. Very successful.
23.01.2022 Very cool decorative endpaper design

18.01.2022 Water stained bookbinding leather. From the grain side the movement of bound and unbound components in the leather move to the outer grain layer and blacken. Hardening (fibre shrinkage with bound component loss such as lubricant and sometimes tannins) in the leather can be seen as cockled and shrunken leather. From the flesh side in image 2 the footprint of the staining can be seen in the degraded paper lining and the leather. Removing this lining released much of the stress the leather was being held under. Lining removed after leather consolidated and allowed to dry for several days.
18.01.2022 Replacing missing headbands based on fragments of tie down threads located in the book. This headband was worked off the book (secured over a waste board) as backfolds of 18th century binding too fragile for passing a needle and coloured thread through the sections. This is an example of a simple technique for reducing risk in conservation repairs while honouring the bookbinders intentions.
16.01.2022 Lynne and Karen from BCS wish you all a fabulous 2021. Here we are during a typical lockdown staff meeting in 2020.
12.01.2022 News: Individual Tuition student Russell learning fundamental forwarding skills for a quarter leather binding. After the sewing is the rounding and backing. Using both the face and claw to form the shoulders for the board to comfortably sit against. The final image is the next stage of making the 17th century limp paper binding as the physical bibliography with diagrams is completed. Next is scaling down the dimensions of the original for the book model. Mobile phone allowed for calculations.
11.01.2022 News: The Board Attachment pamphlet by Nicky Oliver & Karen Vidler (published in 2019 by the Society of Bookbinders UK) can now be purchased from us at BCS in Adelaide for $25 plus p&p. 07.01.2022 Evidence of dust solubilised into soiling when stored in a humid environment. Mechanical cleaning of the soiled leaves of a 18th century book with chemical/smoke sponge and a soft brush. This is the first stage of the paper treatment before localised resizing of weak paper and paper repairs. A satisfying process of reducing acidity and improving the physical appearance of paper.
