25.01.2022 Blog #6 Should we count our calories continued In my last post I explained the inaccuracies of counting calories (if you haven’t done so already make sure you check it out!) but in part 2 I’m going to share with you the benefits of tracking your meals and calories. Many of you have probably experienced the ease and joyous time of being a beginner in the gym. You could eat anything you wanted or train without tracking your progress and still see changes occurring whether i...Continue reading

24.01.2022 Blog #6 Should we count our calories? It doesn’t take too much hard work to find a website, blog, Facebook or Instagram post about calories the best way to track calories or why we shouldn’t count calories. Speaking from personal experience; my Facebook and Instagram feeds are full of different facts, opinions and research in nutrition like I’m sure some of you guys have as well. But is it all truth or are there some myths there as well. This week’s blog is going to be b...roken into 2 parts (Part 2 will be released next week!) The Science: Counting calories has 3 very simple equations: 1. Calories IN Energy Spent = positive (gain mass) 2. Calories IN Energy Spent = negative (lose mass) 3. Calories IN Energy Spent = 0 (maintain) Seems simple, doesn’t it? If you are consuming more energy than you are burning you will put on mass Great for those training for muscle growth (hypertrophy) or adding bulk to their frame. If you are consuming less energy than you are burning (with a balanced diet) will result in reductions of fat or if the diet is extreme, loss of muscle. But if you are consuming roughly the same amount of energy as you are burning, your mass should remain nice and consistent. The Hidden Truths: While the science seems simple, the reality is not quite so. While there are fitness trackers, calorie trackers and different equations available to help you predict how much energy your body uses these are all approximations. Meaning, they are not 100% accurate! There are many processes in the body which use energy (such as digestion) that we are not able to calculate exactly. Meaning whatever method you use to calculate your energy consumption, may over estimate or underestimate the results. This is further impacted by food labels which tell you how many calories the product contains Again, these are not 100% accurate! These foods are tested in a laboratory in controlled conditions to calculate how much energy is contained in them, but our body is not a laboratory and how we digest, process, utilise and store the different parts of food is very different in each person. The Benefits: After reading the first part of this blog it’s hard to see how there can be positives to counting calories. However, it can still be a very useful tool if it is used correctly and you have a better understanding of what the outcomes are. Although, you will have to wait until next week to hear the next part! To Be Continued

18.01.2022 Blog #3: Abs-olutely everything you need to know about the Core For some it’s that ever elusive ‘6-pack’ or reducing the size of the ‘love-handles’ or striving to achieve a solid ‘X’ with broad shoulders and defined lats, a strong compact mid-section, and a big strong ass and legs. Whatever the goal the core is one of the most commonly trained muscle groups. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to find websites, books or blogs from fitness enthusiasts who found the perfect solu...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Blog #2 Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Something I’ve noticed on the rise, is the increase in the number of ACL injuries. Whether it’s just me paying more attention to the problem or there is an overall rise in ACL injuries there is a good chance that you know of someone who has been through it or in fact had the injury yourself. So, after reading this blog I hope that you can pass some information on to another or use it for yourself. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Blog #4 Training to train or Training to conquer? This blog will be written a little differently than previous instead of force feeding you information, I hope that I can inspire you to think about your training programs, goals and why you started your training in the first instance. For some it has been years since you first stepped into a gym, fitness centre or group class. For others, this may have only recently happened, or have dropped in and out without any real con...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Here it is, my first Blog. Sorry for the delay but hopefully it's worth the wait! You are part way through a marathon (and no not a movie marathon!) when you start to feel that dull ache in your side. A stitch. A common issue which is experienced during endurance based sports and activities. Although, if you are feeling a dull ache in your stomach while watching movies maybe that’s a sign to start doing more exercise?! I digress. Hopefully after reading this post - provi...Continue reading

To get the ball rolling, the first post will be next week on a very common issue that most people have experienced in their exercising life The Stitch. 07.01.2022 Blog #5 Understanding the basics of Vo2 max The Maximal rate an individual will consume oxygen during exercise also known as Vo2 max is an important concept for us to understand, even if it is just the basics. I’m sure there are some of you reading this post that remember running the Beep Test in PE classes, trying to find out some unknown number about how ‘fit’ you are. Probably not fully understanding why you were running yourself into complete exhaustion, listening t...Continue reading
