17.01.2022 Bible Discovery Course! The Bible is the most popular and prolific book ever written, spanning all cultures and time periods, gaining the deepest attention of both scholars and critics, and the everyday person. The Bible Discovery courses are designed for a person who wishes to know more about this amazing book. The first of these courses - Learn to Read the Bible Effectively - starts by unpacking the 66 individual books contained within the Bible into a structure by which... it can be understood. Different sections are highlighted - books on the law and history, poetic books, books of prophecies, the well-known gospels, and the letters. The course considers the history of the Bible, examining the timeline over which it was written, its origin and authorship, and how it has been preserved through various manuscripts and languages. The first English translations started some 600-700 years ago with newer versions and translations still being published, trying to relay the original text and its meaning into our own modern language. The course covers some history and challenges of the various translations. For example, four different words in the original text of the New Testament are translated into the single word love. How can that be? Do we lose something in the meaning by this simplification? This, and many other such translation challenges will be considered. Skills in reading the Bible will be taught. Such tools as the marginal cross references in some Bibles link related passages and aid interpretation. Use of Bible dictionaries and concordances are other tools commonly used. By using these, and the critical reading skills considered, the participant will become more familiar with the Bible and gain a better understanding of its message. Please come along and sample the first week of the seminar on either the Wednesday or Friday evening.
