25.01.2022 In a judgment on Wednesday, Brisbane-based Federal Court Justice John Logan ruled the backpacker tax could not be applied to a British woman in Australia on a working holiday visa because it fell foul of a non-discrimination clause in a double taxation treaty between the UK and Australia. Similar treaties exist between Australia and the US, Germany, Finland, Chile, Japan, Norway and Turkey.

Under the new "shortcut method" employees can claim a deduction of 80 cents for each hour they work from home due to COVID-19 as long as they are: * Working from home to fulfil employment duties and not just carrying out minimal tasks such as occasionally checking emails or taking calls,... * Incurring additional deductible running expenses as a result of working from home. Employees do not have to have a separate or dedicated area of your home set aside for working, such as a private study. The shortcut method rate covers all deductible running expenses, including: * Electricity for lighting, cooling or heating and running electronic items used for work (for example your computer), and gas heating expenses * The decline in value and repair of capital items, such as home office furniture and furnishings * Cleaning expenses * Phone costs, including the decline in value of the handset * Internet costs * Computer consumables, such as printer ink * Stationery * The decline in value of a computer, laptop or similar device. https://www.ato.gov.au//Su/Employees-working-from-home/The

10.01.2022 A reminder that from 6th April 2020 there is a new capital gains tax payment deadline for UK residents disposing of UK residential property (not an owners main private residence) and non-UK residents disposing of both UK residential and non-residential property. Late filing penalties apply to taxpayers who fail to notify HMRC about a disposal - or who pay the tax due within 30 days from the date of completion. The due date for paying the tax on such disposals is a notable c...hange - the due date for paying this tax used to be the 31st of January following the end of the tax year in which the disposal occurred. HMRC has advised that for disposals that were notified between 6th April 2020 and 30th June 2020 there will be no late filing penalty, provided the return and the payment was made by 31st July 2020. Notifications after that date may incur a late filing penalty. For any transactions completed from 1st July 2020 late filing penalties will apply if the details of the gain and the payment of any capital gains tax owing are not made to HMRC within 30 calendar days from the completion of the sale.
