24.01.2022 It is an interesting time to be in the Safety game. Since the beginning of the year have discussed with contacts in the Hunter Valley the challenges for the area generally and Mining in particular. The mines are not seen to spending the money they may have in the past outsourcing functions including safety projects while those industries supporting mining are finding not only are their margins being squeezed by the requirements of the miners are getting harder to comply with.... For this reason we have a short-term focus on advertising to this market in providing professional and cost effective solutions to meeting mine safety requirements. Compliance should not be cost prohibitive but neither does it involve rebadging documents from the internet. In March we will be advertising in the HV edition of Coalface Magazine which will look something like the picture below. A small investment now can ensure continued work not only in Mining related fields but for any client that has reasonable safety prequalification requirements. And back to interesting times. Any vacant safety position in the Valley can expect to attract near 100 Applicants with a Cert IV or better qualification. Perhaps now is not the time to look at doing the Cert IV in the expectation it will facilitate a career change. There is no substitute for passion, experience and competence. See more

24.01.2022 Currently feeling a bit under-employed without any major projects planned for the rest of 2016 focusing isntead on local work assisting in training, audit, return to work and general WHS support to Hunter Valley clients. Optimistic about 2017 looking like a better year here in the Hunter and across the country which should translate to opportunities for professional, independent, practical and cost effective Work Health and Safety support to businesses large and small.

20.01.2022 Upgraded work vehicle now looks the part. Ready to assist clients everywhere...

17.01.2022 It has been a while since the last posting. 2015 has been a very difficult year for consultants generally in the Hunter Valley with confidence still relatively low. Safety not being seen as the priority is should be which unfortunately is often the case until after fans and excrement come into contact. For far-sighted business it is however a time when in being selective about how you spend your money you can get value from consultants to assist in building the framework for ...a safe and efficient workplace in preparation for when things pick up. And now is the time when you may be able to get that consultant at a discount of up to a third on what it would have cost only twelve months ago. Be sure you are clear up front what you expect from the consultant and have a clear set of deliverables: having a consultant coming up with a list of problems only means they are angling for more work. You want a list of solutions. Also a good time for safety related training. Instead of paying $300-$500 per person for a half day risk management course you should be able to have a half day course delivered on site for up to 16 workers for under a $1000 (plus that nasty GST). So use the quiet time to not cut back on safety but catch up on those things often overlooked. The last thing a business need sis key personnel missing because of preventable incidents because we never though about health and safety risk when we had the time. See more

16.01.2022 After being accused of looking like I sucked a lemon in promotional photos with the assistance of Bryce Thomas Photography have improved my eating habits. The jury is out on whether hand in pocket or on the side of the car is the better look and feedback gratefully accepted.

13.01.2022 The glamorous life of a Consultant - preparing for the next project that sees me in Tennant Creek for 10 of the next 11 weeks. Now what have I forgotten?

08.01.2022 A bit over twelve months ago, BDV Safety and Compliance Solutions evolved out of my background in Workers Compensation, Personal Injury Litigation and Safety in both operational and consulting roles. The overarching vision was to assist businesses large and small make their workplaces safer by working with them to understand and address agreed issues and gaps. Success would be measured by the extent to which clients no longer needed my assistance. Year one was incredibly succ...essful but that was then this is now. And the time is ripe to take the bull by the horns and join the Facebook community. As well as providing an additional platform to find me (Bernie de Vries) and my business (see my web page and find me on Linked-In), this page will also include articles I have authored and weekly postings on safety issues that have come up in the broader media and specific safety forums. I welcome feedback and conversation on these postings and issues raised and look forward to a long and rewarding relationship. See more

07.01.2022 2016: February & April locked in for Tennant Creek. 2 weeks in Sydney March. And hopefully a smattering of local work throughout the year. But staying optimistic that enough organisations appreciate the importance of safe workplaces and systems of work to keep subject matter experts like me busy enough to feel challenged but still with time for family and friends.
