Nicholas made me a bead necklace at school all by himself this past week. He was so proud of himself and so happy to tell me he had a present for me and give it to me. It touched my heart deeply because it was like the kind of moment I had imagined having before I became a mother. The simple dreams I had of sitting in his little bed with him, reading him a story while he follows along and talks to me are actually coming true now. In the mornings he jumps into my arms and requests mommy cuddles. He asks questions about everything and learns so much every day. Going out into the world running errands has become so much more peaceful. Going to restaurants is a joy. He just started doing simple math yesterday. He is just doing so well. We still have a little ways to go but I have total faith we will get there. When we started this journey a little over two years ago Nicholas was screeching, flapping, biting, not talking.... even when I could catch his eyes which wasn’t often it felt like he was deep inside himself. I can not put into words how devastatingly heartbreaking it was to watch my son slip away from me and feel powerless to stop it.
