21.01.2022 David Stein has nearly completed the conservation work on the Cabbage Tree von Guerard, and the work will be back in our hands on Wednesday 12 August. Please f...ind his text for the process below: The Eugene Von Guerard Cabbage Tree Forrest was painted in oil paint on canvas in 1860 and with age comes change. Like everything, paintings need ongoing maintenance and care. Linen canvas becomes more fragile, the paint layers become brittle and the varnish surface coating becomes discoloured and yellowed. Conservators treat artworks with the aim of preventing the possibility of irreversible deterioration whilst maintaining the artists original intentions with conservation principles of reversibility. Von Guerard is known for his realistic landscapes, where everything in the painting is highly detailed and is in focus. The artist achieves this by using very fine brushes and building-up resin rich glaze layers. Cleaning the old resin varnish off paintings has to be undertaken carefully so as not to remove any of the artists original fine glaze details. Once the old varnish is removed and old repairs reworked, the painting is given an application of a reversible, non-yellowing, conservation grade resin varnish. This re-saturates the paint film and restores the painting to how the artist had originally intended it to be. David Stein PM AICCM, 2020 Art Conservator and Director David Stein & Co. 06.01.2022 Yesterday’s protest against the the overdevelopment of the plaza site. It’s true that this sad site needs redeveloping but not to the scale proposed. That is just greed without consideration for the villlage of Thirroul. #savethirroulvillage #cocoontradingthirroul

04.01.2022 A reminder to all Victorians 'Never Alone' is a new piece by Kent Morris, a Melbourne- based artist and descendant of the Barkindji people of NSW. It was cre...ated using a photo of a Nankeen Night Heron that Kent often saw around his neighbourhood during the first lockdown. We’re going through a very difficult and troubling time, so I wanted to have something that was uplifting and reassuring. It’s a way for us to connect to the place that we are, he told Jacinta Parsons and Brian Nankervis. I’ve seen so many native birds coming into urban areas given the lack of people and cars around there’s been a real regeneration of the ecology. Kent says the artwork speaks to the Indigenous concept of interconnectedness. So many of our beautiful native birds are incorporated in Indigenous creation stories. All those stories are around how we connect together and less centring of the self and more around the community. It’s currently on display near the intersection of Grey and Fitzroy streets in St Kilda. Listen to the full interview on The Friday Revue: https://ab.co/3ihCbQT : Supplied
