25.01.2022 After a few hectic weeks of delivery and moving boats around for Multihull Solutions, Sandy and I are finally doing some work on our boat with a view to leaving Mooloolaba before the end of the month. After someone said my boat wiring looked like a fishing boat setup, pride prompted me to rewire and install connection blocks for ease of working on the electrics. Three days later you can see the result. Even more surprising everything works! I do miss being out on the FP Astrea 42 pictured. I reckon the Astrea is going to be one of those classic models for Fountaine Pajot. Such a pretty little boat, and a great sailor too!

24.01.2022 Should mention we did the trip from Mooloolaba Marina to Hamilton Island Marina in 71hrs. Average speed about 8.2, wind from the SSE max gust 34k and biggest seas about 4m passing thru the Hay Point Anchoring area. The Soana 47 is pretty quick and was very comfortable in following sea and wind. Had to slow it up a bit to reach Hamo in daylight. With a half reefed headsail only still doing 5-6k!

24.01.2022 Finally round Nth Cape

24.01.2022 Drop Toilet on a boat

23.01.2022 Beautiful Antifoul job, but just goes to show the little things can stop a boat just as quick! 2nd time this boat has been in the slings in 2 weeks.

23.01.2022 Hi all. Last time I wrote we were off with plans to head for the Solomon Islands. Well the best laid plans of mice and men, as the saying goes. We made it 50nm up the coast and were days from clearing out of the country when we got the news my mother had had a heart attack. When your mums in her 90s its no laughing matter. So we find ourselves in freezing bloody Melbourne helping her thru this episode. After almost a month down here and her continued recovery (shes a tough... old bird!) were about to head back to the boat. We have missed the window for heading up to the islands. Last year we had the same plan but ended up in the Carribean instead. Maybe we should take this as a sign! We now plan to explore a few of those Coral Sea Reefs instead. Reports of this cruise will be forth coming, so dont abandon us just yet. Cant wait to check out Mellis Reef! Hope your season has been lots of fun. See more

23.01.2022 A better view of the trip overall. Unlike crossing the Pacific East to West there seems to be some really cool spots to stop thru the Nth Pacific. Gotta get E to pick up some NE trade out of the Solomons!

22.01.2022 A really nice Helia 44....forecast says the weathers dropping...got a keen crew.....what could go wrong? Waiting...waiting...for the forecast wind drop...gonna happen soon...lets just go! Go 15nm out of Mackay and the wind was still 20-25 on the nose and waves breaking against the front windows, So I make the decision to head back to Mackay and wait for everything to moderate. Stop at the fuel dock just to top up. Start starboard engine and no water coming out the exhaust. H...mmmmm! Change impeller, blow out all the lines, hmmmmm....take the feed line off the sea cock at the sail drive and open it. Not a drop. So here we sit waiting to be lifted out of the water so I can clean inside the sail drives which are blocked with shell growth. Should have realised when the raw water filter basket had shell grit in it. First time Ive experienced this and to tell the truth wouldnt have thought to check that if not for the advice of the MHS Service Manager guru type person , young Nod! So off again tomorrow hopefully in Mooloolaba by Monday or Tuesday! See more

22.01.2022 Looking around the boat

22.01.2022 Our last post we were supposed to be heading off to Japan on a Neel 45. Made it 200nm and we had a leak into the engine bay, bilge pumps shat themselves, reef lines broke and we came home. Got off the boat and left them with it. It was lifted at Kawana for repairs, new delivery crew are taking it north and good luck to them. I think this is the end of our delivery career. 7 years and weve had enough. Time to take Virgil for a sail!

22.01.2022 That’s how we feel at the moment, but very close to finished

21.01.2022 Heading home.....where to next? Japan! The Neel 45 is going on a long trip via Solomon Islands, Guam and Bonin Islands before landing in Western Japan. Not that excited about the trip but am excited about Japan.

20.01.2022 Saw this the other day. Too long on a boat! And used!!!! Ewwwe!

16.01.2022 Heading out of Moreton ...for....anywhere!

16.01.2022 Thanks for all the responses to my crew call out. Another sailor has kindly responded and is all booked in. Looks like the weather is easing as well so all should be good. As always will post some photos of another coastal jaunt.

15.01.2022 Well folks...Ive seen 13m swell 500nm out crossing the Bight but off Point Lookout and Mooloolaba!

14.01.2022 Virgil has left the building!!! Finally Im sailing our own boat, and while Sandy is working Im going to cruise south for a couple of weeks by myself. First stop is just south of Tangalooma in Moreton Bay. I dont have a problem sailing the boat solo but anchoring in this busy anchorage is a bit of a challenge!

14.01.2022 Arrived back in Brisbane / Mooloolaba yesterday after an 8 day trip from Marsden Cove in NZ. We had terrible two days getting round North Cape to commence the Tasman crossing. But from there on things got better. We got delayed a bit by Customs and Quarantine in Brisbane, so on leaving the river for the last 50nm to Mooloolaba we got hit with 25-30k from the NE strait on the nose. So into Pumicstone Passage on a mooring overnight. The next morning for the final 25nm we rose ...early for the final leg. Engine wont start! 2hrs later after extended phone conversations with a mechanic in NZ (5am here-8am in NZ) engine started and a pleasant 4hrs into Mooloolaba where we arrived in a torrential rain storm. Its been an adventure, but glad to be home. Well done Tony and Simon the owners for putting up with bad weather, sea sickness, and my OK cooking. See more

13.01.2022 It’s been a while since we posted on Beachspace. We have been busy some with diving and delivering, and mostly preparing ‘Virgil’ to undertake our own adventure. Yesterday Virgil left the building!! Our plans were to go out of the Mooloolah River and turn left. So here we are having a day off in a private little anchorage just taking a breath! We still have to organise our comms and stuff, but this is all I can manage for today. We will keep you posted...and I’m sorry to all those clients I had to turn down but..

10.01.2022 Thats how we feel at the moment, but very close to finished

10.01.2022 After a very fun sailing day across Moreton Bay where I sailed past a Lagoon, raced with a Chamberlain ...and won... Im sitting in the bar of the Little Ships Club on Nth Stradbroke discussing the love life of the local butcher with the barmaid. I love Country people. A few beers then move on.....that depends whether I have check out the local celebrities boat( used in the Netfixs series Tidelands ) or if I can escape!

10.01.2022 We just had a good few days out on the reef. This perfect little corner was enjoyed in solitude.

09.01.2022 Just sailed past a Lagoon 41 and catching a Chamberlain 43. Race is on! 9k in 13knpts apparent! Yeah Baby!

09.01.2022 Cruising sunset!

03.01.2022 Leaving NZ on Superflux, the Neel 45 Tri.

03.01.2022 Noice mainsail! Managing 7-8knots in about 12knots of breeze, about 70deg apparent!

02.01.2022 Our anchorage !

01.01.2022 We have just had a rather uncomfortable night in 20k, wind against tide chop and questionable holding. As a consequence either Sandy or I were up on anchor watch with all instruments running, TV on all night watching movies, lights etc. one would expect the battery (400ah Lithium) to be down a little bit. At dawn was 93% and by 1000hrs was full. I have often questioned the wisdom of the D400 Wind Generator, but it seems to be doing the job in this circumstance. On overnight p...assage with AP running (draws about 6amp) in 20k we still end up 70+%. I believe we have perfectly matched our consumption to our generating capability. I still have to move the boom around at anchor to get best exposure for our 600w of panels but I feel its better having panels on the saloon roof rather than a huge structure out the back (in my circumstances). Any suggestion on better performance ideas would be good or any questions are welcome. See more
