06.01.2022 Add a Key Word or Concept . This is one of my favourite language strategies! . The idea here is to try to stay a step ahead in the language level your child is ...using. This way you are helping them to see what the next stage looks (and sounds) like. . So if they sign, act out or gesture something, you say the word for them. For example, if they gesture "eat", you can say "eat". If they point to a banana, you say "banana". . If your child uses a single word (or a version of it), then you might model (say) a two word combination. For example, if they say "eat" while pretending to eat a banana, you could say "eat banana". Maybe they point out a car and so you add a concept like "big", "noisy" or "red" to make the phrase "red car!". . If they are using two words together, you might model a short sentence. For example, if they say "eat banana" while pointing at their baby brother eating, you might say "Yeah! Jack is eating a banana". It's important to try and keep your modelling grammatically correct (rather than baby talk) - especially when you are modelling sentences. . It might be that you can model two word combinations around words your child is already using - but need to model single words only for new words and concepts. That's absolutely fine! It's great to be flexible in following where your child is at. . Handy hint: Theres no need to count those little filler words like "is, "it", "I'm", etc when adding a word on. We are really just talking about adding on KEY words. . Make sure you check out my stories and highlights to see videos of this in action. I was lucky enough to get a play date with the adorable Charlie from @lets_play_charlie and his awesome Mum, Tara. We grabbed some clips to share with you all (despite my three rascals' best efforts!). More to come! . . . #20languagetipsandtricks #speechtherapy #childdevelopment #playbasedlearning #speechtherapylife #earlyinterventionspeech #earlyintervention #everychildmatters #importanceofplay #learnthroughplay #learngrowspeech See more
