25.01.2022 Today’s Sci Art Walks episode suggestion A talk by Dr Jennifer Lavers (Adrift Lab) from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS, with music by Maggie Abraham... Suggested walking location @ The Nut, Stanley Listen now: www.sciartwalks.com.au/the-nut or subscribe to the Sci Art Walks podcast. The small, brown, humble-looking mutton bird may not seem so exquisite upon first glance (or first sniff), but their modest appearance belies their incredible story. From throwing themselves off a cliff for their first flight and not returning to land for five years, to flying round-trip to Antarctica every few days to fish for their growing chicks, these birds are true Tasmanian superheroes. Walking along the Nut, with evidence of mutton birds everywhere around you, spare a moment to appreciate their splendour and to listen to the warning they have for all of us. #BeakerStreet #SciArtWalks #DiscoverTasmania #ScienceWeek #Tasmania

24.01.2022 UPDATE 1pm Saturday 26 September Marine conservation experts and trained volunteers have released 108 long-finned pilot whales outside the heads at Macquarie ...Harbour following the mass stranding on Tasmania’s west coast. It is believed there are no live whales remaining in the Harbour. The Incident Response team is concentrating on preparing the deceased whales closest to the Strahan township for disposal during Sunday’s predicted better weather. 16.01.2022 Westbury Reserve, a haven to migratory birds and numerous Tasmanian endemic species, was purchased by the Commonwealth Government in 1999 for conservation. Now the Tasmanian Government plans to build a high security prison on the Reserve. Please consider helping to oppose this plan by signing the petition, spearheaded by the incredible Sarah Lloyd (whom you may remember from Beaker Street's Enchanted Slime Mould Forest a couple years ago). 13.01.2022 A big win for science, the planet, and facts today!

12.01.2022 This is a compelling first test of a simple, low-tech possible solution to a persistent problem that could have life-long immune implications for babies born via C-section. Yeah it's a bit gross, but the baby's not gonna complain.

11.01.2022 Q: How did we create our Tasmanian audio-escapes for Sci Art Walks? A: We collaborated with brilliant artists like local violinist and composer Emily Sheppard, who spent a few days camping at South Cape Bay, and emerged with the most glorious music to accompany a talk by First Dog On The Moon. Listen now for free at sciartwalks.com.au/south-cape-bay-walk, or subscribe to the Sci Art Walks podcast.

09.01.2022 Congratulations to Saskia Sparshott, the winner of the 2020 Beaker Street Science Photography Prize People's Choice Award! Saskia's stunning photograph, titled ‘Into the Sea of Blue’ was chosen by popular vote during the exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and comes with a $200 printing voucher to competition sponsor Full Gamut, Tasmania's premier fine art printers. Saskia provided the following description of the image: The incredible Noctiluca scintillans,... commonly known as Sea Sparkle, is a bioluminescent species of dinoflagellate that resides in marine environments. When disturbed by waves or other movement, a beautiful blue glow can be seen by the naked eye. During daylight hours, Noctiluca scintillans in marine settings can be determined by the presence of cloudy, rosy pink discolouration in the water. The visual difference between day and night is quite remarkable. Noctiluca scintillans has been found in many areas of Tasmania's coastline and never fails to excite photographers and general viewers alike.
