19.01.2022 A huge shout out to schools who are working so hard to ensure that families have access to quality educational resources at the beginning of next term. Not all learning will occur online. Not all learning should be - even if families have access to enough wifi and devices. This photo is from the team at Beaumaris PS in WA. You can see more on their Facebook page. Share a photo of what you are doing at your school to prepare or to lift spirits. Well done everyone

15.01.2022 COMMENT OF THE DAY (as a massive discussion spools out further down the page, about how to do home schooling in the year of the virus... a teacher and parent ...wrote this... Teacher and parent here (as are most of my colleagues). Of course parents are seeing the reality of an overcrowded curriculum first-hand and questioning its efficacy and their ability to do their own jobs while helping to deliver it. This is what we, as a profession, have been SCREAMING about into the wind for years. All we want to do is teach kids, and yes, of course there are administrative duties that go along with that. Of course there are curriculum outcomes to be met. But learning is a process, and school is not its beginning and end point. Our curriculum has become crowded with so much content and so many markers of assessment that we dont have time to teach properly. We are doing both our jobs - as facilitators of learning AND as professional administrators - with the same amount of time allocated to us as we always have been, while the benchmarks we have to meet become higher, the curriculum becomes driven by content instead of skills and inquiry and we are overwhelmed. Successive governments respond to what the public tells them they want - why isnt that being taught in school?, test those things!, grade that against this! and as a result the learning process is undermined, the kids are stressed and we are overworked. Hopefully this shifting paradigm highlights the needs to listen to the profession about what works best. Maybe its time we realised that learning is holistic and takes place in all aspects and contexts of our lives, not just classrooms and that we all have roles to play together in this. If it brings a permanent change in curriculum content, delivery and gives teachers more flexibility and autonomy then perhaps we will gain something from this experience too.
