24.01.2022 Tune in to EarthChat each Friday at 10am or to the repeat at 8am Saturday on Seymour FM 103.9. Stream on the web at www.seymourfm.com.au/audio-player.html Fire seasons are becoming longer and hotter, and starting earlier from influences of climate change. This is our reality every year. The recent Bushfire Royal Commission head this message many times. If you live on the edge of town or in the countryside, each year this time there is work to do to make your survival and the ...survival of your house a little more likely. Will you "Leave Early" or "Stay and Defend"? These pose some challenging questions, but ultimately you have to plan to Stay and Defend....if you can't get out from an approaching fire. Community Fireguard is a CFA initiative that helps prepare residents for planning to survive a bushfire. Community Fireguard have been running a 6 evening webinar over recent weeks to help people in their Bushfire Survival Planning. A Survival Plan addresses: - Actions leading up to the bushfire season - actions during the bushfire season - actions leading up to fire risk days - actions on fire risk days. but number one on all plans is personal protection from radiant heat. Mary-Ann Egan from the CFA FireGuard Unit will join EARTHCHAT this week on 103.9FM and discuss the challenges, and practical responses to prepare yourself and your home to survive. EarthChat on 103.9 Seymour FM at 10am on fridays and again 8am on saturday morning. Start the day with some deeper thinking, and start planning for the fire season whilst the greenery gets taller, faster. Listen up and get active.

24.01.2022 Tune in to EarthChat each Friday at 10am on Seymour FM 103.9 MHz or stream live on the web at www.seymourfm.com.au/audio-player.html The fight to save native forests from logging has been a prickly issue for decades. With the creation of the Regional Forest Agreements in the Kennett years came a onslaught on our native forests as clearfelling for....86% for woodchips.... Just 12% becomes timber for building. With this comes the loss of habitat for a number of THREATENED SPECI...ES like the Leadbeaters Possum, Greater Glider, Powerful Owl and the Sooty Owl. Then there is the loss of a living forest for carbon drawdown in OUR time of rapid climate change. This is a hot button issue. Friday sept 25th on EARTHCHAT on 103.9FM we look at 3 court cases where Environmental Justice Australia as environmental lawyers have called out VicForests poor logging practices and their failure to protect endangered species, as per their Regional Forest Agreements. The Leadbeaters Possum case, the Central Highlands injunction to halt logging, and the case of logging in areas unaffected by fire when fire-affected areas have a diminished habitat for wildlife. Then we come home to the threats to Save The Tallarook Forest. The campaign, its challenges, its energy and Simon Cocking joins us on the phone. Notwithstanding the high stakes, THIS is an exciting campaign with many facets and opportunities for community engagement. Join David Clarey and Peter Lockyer on EarthChat this friday at 10am on 103.9FM. Seriously, this is YOUR local station. Wouldn't miss it for quids.

23.01.2022 The Save The Tallarook Forest campaign is building, and has many dimensions: How BEAM members can get involved: Sign the petition change.org/SavetheTallarookForest Join our forest survey teams - video recording the locations of individuals from threatened species. Follow Save the Tallarook Forest facebook page and invite your Friends to follow too.... Write to the Ministers and MPs - details with the Petition Write letters to newspapers- likewise. Writing to Newspapers is very effective, and need not be so onerous. A Letter to an Editor will be seen by your MPs, but also reach a much larger target audience, and effectively invite them into the conversation. One letter equals 110 voices? See more

23.01.2022 In Australia, there is currently considerable interest in community batteries, and a number of installations are now providing initial results. Community batteries can provide benefits to individual customers and to the network services, and are likely to encourage more solar installations on homes. Mitchell Community Energy conducted a webinar on 31st August that brought together national experts to explain how community batteries work, where they have been installed or planned, models of ownership and management, and the economic and social benefits and costs of providing and operating them. 23.01.2022 Fruit on household trees and plants is a tempting treat for hungry wildlife. Netting is a popular way to protect fruit, but inappropriate types of netting can k...ill or injure animals such as birds, flying-foxes and possums. Netting with a large mesh size is more likely to entangle animals and their struggling causes deep cuts and strangulation, often leading to death. Agriculture Victoria are introducing new requirements for use of specific fruit netting. From 1 September 2021, a person must only use netting with a mesh size no greater than 5mm x 5mm at full stretch to protect household fruiting plants. Failure to comply with this regulation could result in a fine under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2019. Further details: https://agriculture.vic.gov.au//protecting-fruit-trees-and

22.01.2022 States are turning the Million Jobs Plan into reality From big new batteries being built in Victoria and the Northern Territory, to South Australia naming three hydrogen hubs that it says will drive epic growth in wind and solar capacity, it's exciting to see our state governments turn ideas from the Beyond Zero Emissions "Million Jobs Plan" into reality. And this week the NSW Government released their Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap to deliver jobs and abundant, afforda...ble and reliable, low-emissions electricity across the state. The Roadmap includes an option for a minimum price assurance for generators and speeding up approvals for transmission infrastructure in Renewable Energy Zones, in line with key asks from the Million Jobs Plan https://millionjobs.org.au/. #renewables #renewableenergyisthefuture #millionjobsplan https://vimeo.com/449538656

19.01.2022 What does Puckapunyal mean in Taungurung? The Taungurung Language Reference Group (LRG) continues to be busy working on language matters. One of the things that they have been working on is a request from the Army for the meaning of the name ‘Puckapunyal’. After much research and expert linguistic and anthropological advice they have reached a consensus that it most likely means ‘among the hills’. ... Puckapunyal is in the process of getting new signage and the meaning we have provided will be incorporated into that signage along with an acknowledgement of the Taungurung people. 18.01.2022 Great progress has been made with building momentum to protect the Tallarook State Forest from logging. A new group, Friends of Tallarook Forest, has been formed (allied with BEAM), by a dozen or so neighbours and users of the forest. We have created a change.org petition, opened a facebook page, had articles in the media, contacted politicians, and started surveying the endangered species in the proposed logging coupes. 17.01.2022 Remnant bushland on the edge of town, in town or even out of town, is so valuable in the ecosystem as a biolink of different habitats. But it is not valued enough, and it can be really difficult to protect. Dr Peter Mitchell joins EarthChat this friday at 10 (and saturday morning at 8 am for breakfast) to share his extensive regional experience as an ecologist working in the field of biolinks and Landcare. We discuss the value of remnant vegetation, the value of regrowth, and... the role that Gardens for Wildlife play in bolstering the flora for birds and bees and the like. We will also touch on threats to remnant vegetation...perceptions of fire, illegal logging and gradual abuse. 17.01.2022 Oldies standing with young'uns at the StudentStrike4Climate. Right now, the government is deciding how to spend billions in Covid-19 recovery funds. It's a critical opportunity for them to fund our future, by creating thousands of jobs that will fast-track solutions to climate change and transition Australia to renewable energy. Instead, the Federal Government is planning to give billions in taxpayer dollars to their mates in the gas industry. Gas is a fossil fuel that will turbocharge the climate crisis. There are also very few jobs in gas, meaning it’s not going to help Australia’s economic recovery. #fundOurFutureNotGas

06.01.2022 This friday, AND saturday on EARTHCHAT on 103.9FM....... One of Australia’s most prominent builder’s labourers, John Thompson, will give a fascinating talk on EarthChat on two topics relating to energy. 1. The Snowy 2.00 is a lot of smoke and mirrors.... Back in 2017 when he was Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull proudly announced a mammoth pumped hydro electricity scheme called Snowy 2.00. A multi-billion dollar project, it was to build on the Snowy Mountains system of dams and watercourses to provide cheaper and more reliable power as renewables were introduced into the Australian energy system. Turnbull called it nation building a term often used by politicians when referring to very, very expensive projects. Recently, a group of 37 eminent scientists and engineers has written an open letter to the Prime Minister (now Scott Morrison) and the Premier of NSW pointing out that the scheme is fatally flawed and will waste billions of taxpayers’ money and will not be needed now that other technology such as batteries is available. In addition, cause very substantial damage to the Kosciuszko National Park . In this open letter, the experts call for a review of the project even though work has commenced on part of it. John will provide a history of what could be one of the nation’s most embarrassing financial and environmental bungles. 2. Helen Haines’ Local Power Plan. Did it get any funding support from the federal government's budget? Helen is the independent MP for Indi and, working with a number of community energy groups across Australia (including Mitchell Community Energy) , has developed a plan for a national establishment of local power operators. The Local Power Plan is an exciting proposal to ensure that our electricity supplies in regional areas throughout Australia are clean, cheap, healthy and local. It seeks to develop a system that builds on the large number of local energy groups such as Mitchell Community Energy right across the nation so that local people can develop, own and benefit from energy developed in their area. It is happening in countries overseas and can happen here. John will outline the development of the Plan, what it proposes, and how it would benefit towns like Seymour. This EarthChat will be the most riveting, exciting and interesting presentation that has been provided. It will be much better than the stumbling guitar and singing of some of the presenters. Thats what John Thompson says. So.....Judge for yourself. Tune in 103.9FM on Fridays at 10am and AGAIN as a REPEAT on saturdays at 8am. Hey, EarthChat for breakfast, and John Thompson.

05.01.2022 EarthChat again....fantastic...and twice in a week! Tune in each Friday at 10am or to the repeat at 8am Saturday on Seymour FM 103.9. Vanessa recently was successful w...ith a DELWP Mini Grant in the climate action spaceComposting and planting for Climate Resilience". This project aims to engage secondary students from Seymour College in the fun and deeper thinking of composting and gardening....a complement to acedemic pursuits BUT a real insight inro relaxation and taking action on climate change. THEN we look at the groundswell of bussinesses around the country calling for a Green New Deal, a renewables-led economic recharge after Covid, and a serious effort at addressing climate change, our existential threat that most Australians feel is happening, but not in Scomo Land. A year ago, there were few business organisation in this space. THIS is inspirational. Like EarthChat. Share us with a morning coffee, or a late breakfast. 02.01.2022 In the interests of keeping an open mind, I recently listened to the National Press Club address by Andrew Liveris, former CEO of DOW Chemicals and special advisor to the National Covid-19 Commission Advisory Board (NCC). While he is a very successful businessman, I’m not convinced of his advice to the Morrison Government to implement a gas-led recovery. There was a lack of scientific intelligence at the NCC table; in fact, it would appear that a gas-led recovery was a foregone conclusion, which raises the issues of conflict of interest and integrity.
