25.01.2022 When children have big and overwhelming feelings they need their caregivers to be their emotional anchor, reassuring them that they are safe and secure and helping them to return to a place of calm. Children have not yet developed the parts of their mind that they need to calm themselves (particularly small children but also teenagers), they learn this over time through the comfort they are given by their caregivers. It becomes very difficult though for a caregiver to help ...their child calm when they have become unstuck by their own big and overwhelming feelings; which can happen to anyone when life becomes too stressful and worrying. This is one of the reasons why I work so closely with caregivers, to help them understand their own care needs as well as their child’s. For the next few weeks appointments with little people are on hold at beansprout counselling but I am available for video or telephone chats at no cost for caregivers that need this support at the moment so that they can comfort their child. Wishing everyone the care they need to make it through this storm See more

22.01.2022 This is an introduction to my new, lovely practice space at beansprout child and youth counselling. I have made this especially for young people who might feel anxious about attending a counselling practice. Hopefully this shows that it is a warm and welcoming place

19.01.2022 Kids have been back at school or childcare for a few weeks now so hopefully households have settled back into routines that they feel comfortable with, which also hopefully means that caregivers now have more mental space for a book recommendation- ‘The Whole Brain Child’ by Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson is such a great little handbook of simple and effective strategies for responding to the big emotions of little ones, the strategies given are based on leading brain scie...nce but explained in a way that is very easy to understand and apply in everyday care to children. One of my favourite strategies, which I think is particularly relevant for this current time, is helping children make implicit memories explicit through repeated storytelling, to not expect them to forget difficult experiences but helping them to make sense of these experiences. (The image below of me holding the book is to show that it is just a nice little book, it is not a big, difficult task to get through). See more

02.01.2022 Safe and caring gestures of physical comfort from the important people in their lives is the primary need for children’s well-being, these gestures are far more meaningful than comforting with words. In my therapeutic work with children I always try to strengthen the existing important relationships in the child’s life so that counselling is not needed anymore but while I am a child’s counsellor I become an important person in their world. Children need to feel safe and car...ed for by me and at times this means showing safe and caring gestures of physical comfort a hug, a reassuring pat on the head or play activities that build connection. With careful consideration I have now opened my practice again for work with children. I am following all of the health guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone who attends my practice but choosing to attend is up to the feeling of safety for caregivers in knowing that physical distancing can not be assured in my approach to therapeutic work with children.
