25.01.2022 #Mineralization of nutrients is crucial to the survival of plants in a #naturalsystem. The waste product that's created by protozoa & #nematodes that consume fu...ngi and bacteria are critical important workings of the #soilfoodweb. These wastes contain carbon and other nutritional compounds that had been immobilized, but are now once again mineralized and made available to plants. About 80% of nitrogen that plant needs comes from the waste produced by bacteria/fungi eating nematodes and protozoa. Since bacteria and fungi are attracted by plant #exudates to the rhizosphere and that is where protozoa consume them as a huge source of #plantfood is delivered. #microbemonday #soilbroughttolife

22.01.2022 The popular and successful On-Farm Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme has received a boost in the Federal Budget. Water Minister Keith Pitt and David Littleprou...d MP have today announced an extra $50 million in the Budget for the scheme, doubling its total funding to $100 million. The scheme provides much needed assistance to improve water security, productivity and profitability on farms. Managed by states and territories, it had become over-subscribed by an estimated 2000 applications. The Government’s extra $50 million will be available this financial year to drought-affected livestock producers and horticulturalists with permanent plantings, Minister Pitt said. This investment in our farmers provides rebates up to 25% of the eligible infrastructure costs, capped at $25,000. Minister Littleproud said, While recent rains are a cause for optimism, recovering from drought can take years rather than months. This rebate is essential in the immediate term to help farmers keep livestock watered and permanent plantings alive in the drought. It’s even more valuable over the long term because the water infrastructure farmers build now will better prepare them for future drought events. The Commonwealth has stepped up to provide this extra funding to ensure more farmers do not miss out on this crucial rebate, and I know farmers would welcome state governments also stepping up to co-fund these rebates in order to provide certainty to communities, Minister Littleproud said. 20.01.2022 One of the first symptoms of depression is lethargy. I’d go ‘what’s the point of putting that paddock in?’ I had a neighbour, a seventy-two year old, shearing ...his own sheep and I was forty-seven and I couldn’t get out of my damn seat. My wife was at me like most wives, ‘go to the doctor because there’s something wrong with you’. And me being like most blokes, took a gutful of it and didn’t do anything. And then I decided, I’ll go to the doctor just to shut her up for five minutes. So I went to the doctor in town, he’s a friend and he suggested I go to counselling. Well I didn’t believe that I had depression, but after I talked to the wife I decided I would go. It turned out that the straw that broke me was that I had this image that a big, tough bloke like me should be able to shear all day and drive a tractor all night, which isn’t possible. And the counsellor said, the best thing you can do is go talk with your peers, talk with your mates. Tell ‘em how you feel. And that’s exactly what I did. One of the things that came out of my depression is that now I’m more of a sook than I ever was. It doesn’t take much to tear up, but it feels good to get it out. When I’m old, I’ve got a vision of me and my wife sitting here, with a cuppa tea, with our daughters and grandchildren down there. That was the vision that saved me. That was John's story. Their flavour profile is very different, but this comes from the length ...the leaves are oxidised rather than from a difference in the leaf’s origin. 09.01.2022 These photos were taken nearly four decades apart and they were both during a drought. So what's changed? Farmers who have turned to the regenerative farmin...g movement say their land is more resilient as they embrace native grasses and trees. David Marsh from Boorowa, NSW, transformed his land over the past 20 years and has passed on his knowledge to other farmers across the capital region and beyond. The converts say the regenerative farming method is becoming more mainstream. Read more: https://ab.co/30idxsF : David Marsh and Linda Cavanagh
