25.01.2022 Over the past twenty-five years b.e_architecture has designed many beach houses in Victoria and other states in Australia. These residences are not simply inner-city residences transported to a coastal setting but individually designed to consider the unique environment of their coastal locations.
24.01.2022 From a prototype to the finished article. Directors Jon and Andrew evaluating an early prototype of a new air conditioning registers made from solid timber, designed for use in our period renovations in stead of the more commercial lineal slots options . The idea sprang from seeing a vintage galvanised ceiling vent in a Sydney Restaurant and the idea of creating a round timber version for use in our period renovations, was first discussed These images show the development ...from the initial idea to its final more open configuration, installed in a decorative plaster ceiling in one of our renovations in Armadale. The vents are made from sections of wire brushed solid oak that are finished with a transparent wash of the ceiling colour to allow the grain to still be visible. We hope to use these registers not only in our heritage projects but also in some of our contemporary buildings in the future where a re-interpretation of an older aesthetic creates a welcome point of difference. Thank you to Andrew Crellin from Dome Builders for his help in making these early prototypes by hand in his workshop for the project. @b.e_architecture #prototype #study #madebyhand #reinterpretation #construction #building #home #craftsmanship #detailinspo #bespoke #periodrestoration #house #wood #invention #residentialarchitecture #simplicity #architecture #melbournearchitects #madeinmelbourne #airconditioning
22.01.2022 Our practices take on traditional steel windows, are being installed for the first time after being developed over the last year with the Amore Engineering team in Coburg. The images today show some of the complexity of the components designed from scratch and made by hand seen here being finished in their workshop. The windows are finer than their steel counterparts with new detailing like the scalloped edges at the junction with the glass and in the corners of the frames, ... more in keeping with their application in this Victorian restoration project. Apart from the aesthetics, the windows have been detailed with inbuilt door closers that prevent them slamming shut on little fingers and pivot hinges designed to take their great weight as well as a whole systems of built in rubber seals that eliminate drafts and heat loss often associated with their steel counterparts. It is amazing to see the final product from the first early hand sketches and prototypes to these beautifully refined polished examples of engineering ingenuity. Thank you to Michael Amore and his father who started the firm many years ago for their expertise and vision in developing this product for our project. @b.e_architecture @amore-engineering @domebuilding #bespoke #detail #heriragehouse #restoration #renovation #steelwindows #brass #brasswindows #madebyhand #handmade #orderbuilt #oneoff #steelfabrication #australianmade #designedinvictoria #engineering #construction #house #home #interiordesign #interiordecoration #interiorarchitecture #windows #melbournearchitects
22.01.2022 A quick butter paper sketch can sometimes captures the kernel of an idea perfectly. This new residential project in Hawthorn involves the reworking of a heritage listed 150 year old terrace that the owners wanted to extensively renovate in a unique but sympathetic manner combined with a very contemporary extension behind the historic building that explored another distinct group of ideas and materials. This quick sketch illustrates a simple structure made of two interlocking... forms with the upper floor bedrooms behind the facade all looking into a long first floor picture garden. This is a technique used in many of our projects dealing with issues of over looking and building restrictions concerning first floor windows. We look forward to sharing with you some of the modelling and renders of this project over the coming weeks. @b.e_architecture #sketch #casestudy #renovation #heritageoverlay #inspiration #architecture #studio #hawthornhouse #archilife #archdaily #dezeen #architecturaldetail #archilover #yellowtracearchitecture #yellowtrace #simplicity #melbournearchitects #australianarchitects #sydneyarchitects #modernarchitecture #residentialarchitecture #architecturelovers
21.01.2022 In these early studies for a new residence to be built in the new year, the houses main functions are proposed on the first floor with large north facing terraces. These images show the supporting concrete superstructure being used as part of the buildings final aesthetic. Additional play areas for the children and guest accomodation is on the lower level that will cut into the sloping site. These areas will look out on to a private garden behind the sites existing large f...ront fence. The garden will also be accessed by a concrete stair from the upper terrace, which is part of the composition of the buildings facade. The proposed materials with the off form concrete are an elongated handmade brick and cedar screens. @b.e_architecture #housestudy #instudio #casestudy #architecturalrenders #architecturaldigest #archdaily #dezeen #architecturaldetail #archilover #archilife #architecturelover #yellowtracearchitecture #yellowtrace #elledecor #elledecorationfr #elledecoration_nl #elledecorationd #archdigestindia #ad_spain #adrussia #melbournearchitects #australianarchitects #sydneyarchitects #modernarchitecture #residentialarchitecture #inspiration #thecuriae #intérieur
12.01.2022 Our Elwood renovation for one of the children of our firms first clients 25 years ago is nearing completion. These photos of the two rough sawn cyprus posts that represent the structure of the extension, are shown on their journey from the @ambercreekfarm mill in Gippsland where the tree was felled and milled, to their final home in Elwood. Milled while still green, the 450x450mm rough sawn post is a beautiful contrast to the smooth black timber of the facade and the avocado... coloured internal walls. The rear living area is stepped down into from the kitchen, ringed by a low timber seat that creates a contained living area reminiscent of a 1960’s conversation pit. To access the rear garden, One steps up onto this timber ledge via a large river stone sourced by the builder and the architects on a country excursion. Thank you to Josh and his team from @jgfcreative builders who have gone the extra mile on this project. We look forward to showing you more of the special house over the next weeks as it starts to take on its final form. @b.e_architecture @jgfcreative @ambercreekfarm @artedomus #lucasmill #cyprustimber #building #buildinginwood #timberarchitecture #madebyhand #attentiontodetail #wood #construction #elwoodhouse #residentialarchitecture #natural #raw #texture #simplicity #builttolast #conversationpit #constructiondetail #archidetail #bespoke
12.01.2022 In this second storey landing above a curving staircase, a simple elliptical skylight was created. The skylight and single curve in the wall below, set up an interesting dynamic while not overpowering the simplicity of the area. @b.e_architecture #skylight #plaster #shadows #light #simplicity #minimalism #less #house #less #sculpture ##architecturaldetail #archilover #archilife #arquitectura #interiorstyling #interiorlovers ... #interiordesign #interiorarchitecture #residentialarchitecture #residentialarchitecture #architecturelovers #homedecor #decoration #inspiration #interiordecor #elegantminimalism #thecuriae #intérieur See more
12.01.2022 b.e_architecture has designed numerous country residence across Australia as part of our large residential portfolio. We understand that country houses are fundamentally different from their urban counterparts and need to be designed in response to the unique characteristics of their rural settings.
09.01.2022 This verandah on this Victorian renovation project had its original tessellated tiles removed during a previous renovation and rather than choose a modern day vitrified copy, we used quieter hexagonal cut bluestone. The tiler from Adriatic Stone, is actually a stone mason chosen for his attention to detail and time honoured techniques fitting for this grand building’s main point of arrival. @b.e_architecture @adriaticstone domebuilding #hawthornhouse #kooyongkoothouse #renovation #tessalatedtiles #verandah #detail #craftsmanship #attentiontodetail #house #home #inspiration #construction #constructiondetail #building #madeinmelbourne #archidetail #forgottentrades #stonemasonry #bluestone #tiling #heritageoverlay #periodhouse
07.01.2022 The facade of the extension to our latest project in Hawthorn is shown in these renders today. A locally made handmade brick has been selected that has a naturally occurring colour variation in the kiln firing process that will be sorted into its tonal groups and laid in exacting patterns as shown in these renders This is a ongoing interest of our firm over many years, in how stripes or banding have been used for centuries in European civic architecture. While this detail wil...l almost appear random or accidental, something that can be looked past, it adds a sense of detail and decoration to the austere firm that is in keeping with the Victorian residence it is extended from. @b.e_architecture @krausebricks #hawthornhouse #architecturalrenders #artisanbrick #brickarchitecture #renovation #restoration #simplicity #handmade #timeless #detail #attentiontodetail #bespoke #archilovers #concrete #constructiondetail #house #residentialarchitecture #less #warmminimalism #heritageoverlay #melbournearchitecture #lessismore #melbournhouse #bespokearchitecture
