25.01.2022 Grant's EH had a bit of the early sixties off-roader going on with the ride height, so he dropped off a pair of front springs and lowering blocks. When I trial fitted the blocks, which were advertised as two inch but measured two and a half, the spring plates were way below the rim, illegal and dangerous because if the tyre deflates the wheel's off the ground. So what do we do if something's out of specification and an alternative can't be sourced? Modify it of course! I fi...tted up the four jaw chuck in the lathe, clocked-in the blocks and turned an inch of each one, then re-drilled the counterbores for the centre bolt buttons. Then, after a quick trial assembly check it was into the press and the buttons pressed in, ready for fitment. The spring plates were bowed after fifty something years of use, so they were pressed flat while they were out, then the whole shooting match was assembled, the U bolts trimmed to length and torqued to spec. The replacement springs took care of the front, and the ol' girl sits real nice, legal and safe, with just enough ground clearance. @ Beardy's Muscle Car Garage

21.01.2022 Dom's Mazda 1300 rotary conversion had RX2 headers which were jammed against the footwell and wouldn't pass engineering, and off the shelf headers aren't available so a custom full system was the only answer. Using laser cut header plates and stainless steam pipe and bends, equal length primary pipes incorporating resonators run past the back of the gearbox and merge in front of the rear axle, then into a single three inch over-axle pipe into a two-and-a-half inch baffled muffler and a down-turned tailpipe, ensuring that the car passes noise regulations. A straight through cannon replaces the baffled muffler, for "off-road" use only of course. @ Beardy's Muscle Car Garage

14.01.2022 Glenn had taken his Corvette to other repairers to have a loose rear wheel bearing rectified, but nobody could help so he called me. The hub assembly had end-float instead of preload so I pushed the hub out, cleaned and inspected everything and ordered new bearings and seals. On arrival, I pressed the outer bearing on, drew the inner bearing onto the shaft with a nut and a couple of spacers, measured the end-float and gently removed the hub with a pair of levers. Because th...e adjustment shims aren't readily available, I trued the spacer in the lathe and turned off the equivalent amount to the end-float. When reassembled, end-float measured zero so I dismantled the hub again, hand lapped another half a thou' of the spacer for preload and reassembled to find it has a light drag when rotated, perfect! Yet another dismantle, outer bearing pressed off, bearings packed, outer bearing and seal installed in the housing, park brake reattached and, this time, both bearings drawn on the shaft. A shiny new brake rotor to replace the cooked one, drive-shaft, caliper etc refitted and the "impossible" job's done! @ Beardy's Muscle Car Garage See more

14.01.2022 Dom called and got me to pick his 12A bridge port converted Mazda 1300 to complete the engine bay wiring and engineering. The crossmember behind the gearbox had been cut out for tailshaft clearance and the floor cut out to clear the gearshift so those areas had to be restored to at least original strength. 25 x 50 x 3mm RHS was cut welded inside the original channel then 5 mm flat bar was used to box the outside flush to the original steel, making the repair stronger than before it was cut. Filler panels were then cut and stitch-welded into the transmission tunnel to bring it back to original strength and, with the gearshift boot fitted, seal the engine fumes out of the cabin.

10.01.2022 Bevan called and got me to pick up his HG Monaro which was in need of a little loving. The suspension was badly worn, the clutch was jamming, the engine had a huge flat-spot, the seats were wobbly and most of the electrics didn't work. All of the suspension bushes were replaced with OEM type rubber bushes as were the lower ball joints. One of the spring hangers had to be cut out because of a previous modification to the spare wheel well and was bolted back in as shown in a p...revious post. The clutch pushrod was at an angle of about twelve degrees to the slave cylinder which explained the piston jamming so I fabricated a new, more robust mounting bracket for the T5 and that problem was fixed. A check of the ignition timing revealed that there was insufficient ignition advance, so that was corrected, and I adjusted the accelerator pump cam position on the Holley and fitted a bigger pump jet. Now the throttle can be stomped to the floor from idle, waking up the 400 Chev with spectacular results in the lower gears! A couple of days or so repairing the seat mountings, fixing some exhaust rattles, sorting the electrics and fitting a new immobiliser, and Bevan was driving away in a safe classic, with a grin from ear to ear. He reckons it's like driving a different car! See more
