24.01.2022 The story of the magic lantern really blew my mind. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. This fascinating technology and its roots back in the 1400s. https://youtu.be/TgTRJZP9DEE

24.01.2022 More exploring on kunanyi Mt Wellington.

22.01.2022 Visited the Channel Museum today. Mind blown, an incredible collection. I will definitely be back as I couldn't possibly take it all in one visit. Thanks to David and Steve for showing me around and all the crew for their warm welcome.

22.01.2022 Here's the trailer for Season 2, part 2. I'll release the Derwent River piece next week. See, I said I'd be back. https://youtu.be/pqaWUHN3IK4

22.01.2022 I'm writing an episode on Victorian era magic lantern slide technology and I've been listening to Victorian era music to "help" my thought process. It didn't. Time to switch back to Pink Floyd. Now if anyone has a magic lantern slide projector (a nice brass and wooden one perhaps) I'd love to hear from you if I could film it, pretty please. I have access to a "toy" lantern, which is the terrible marketing name for the children's black tin lanterns that ordinary people might aspire to in the 1800s, should they not be able to afford the brass and polished wood version. If anyone has a mechanical magic lantern slide (the slides with wind up handles that made "moving" pictures, like cows jumping over the moon, etc. Please do make my day. I doubt such items exist in Tasmania, but I'd love to be surprised.

22.01.2022 My bridge piece is now with the editor for a first cut. It'll need more work, but it's into the final stages before I have something to show you. Feeling pretty happy so far.

21.01.2022 I've heard tales of the platypus in the Rivulet for years. We used to walk the Rivulet track at lunch time searching for it. Never saw it, assumed soemone was pulling my leg. So today I'm filming the mountain from Cascade Gardens and two very nice people came up and asked if I was filming the platypus. I said I've never seen it, they said it's over there! Did I mention I'm not good with the bleeding obvious?

21.01.2022 Long before red and green glasses and sharks jumping out of the movie screen, there were stereoscopic photos. Tasmanian photographers made 3D photo cards and Mt Wellington was a popular subject. Maria Grist kind,y shared her collection of these cards with me and I made a video about them. https://youtu.be/ipRYVHVxQGA

18.01.2022 Cradle Mountain

17.01.2022 One of the photos on display at Korongee. This one's my Grand Parents on an Indian motorcycle with my (2 year old) Dad in the sidecar. c1918

17.01.2022 I found two more photos of VDL Bank collapse that I didn’t know we had. See https://youtu.be/0kPQymx4rd0

17.01.2022 The Boer War was the third biggest conflict Australia has been in. I confess I knew very little about it until Reg Watson enlightened me. It's a fascinating tale of heroes and volunteers in a time of Empire. The ending is quite moving. I decided to release this rather than wait for the copyright claim to be settled. I'm pretty confident in the outcome and some friends at Defence offered to testify in my favour, if it ever came to that. https://youtu.be/UvzXHp6kJsU

17.01.2022 Beatties History Night at the Tea Rooms is on! Thursday October 22nd, 2020 at 6:00pm sharp. 147 Macquarie Street, Hobart. $25 per person includes mini high tea. ... Call 0491 356 255 to book and pay. Social distancing applies. If we have to cancel due to COVID full refund. Limit 18 people, so book now. You must have a confirmed booking, we can’t take any extras on the night, sorry. If you have mobility issues, please call and discuss. As it’s a Beatties night, I will be the only speaker and I’ll be introducing the new exhibition and talking about each photo, where Beatties is heading in 2021 and of course about the documentary series. Oh, and I’ll probably mention the Korongee dementia village because they have a large collection of my photos too. It’ll be fairly casual with plenty of time for questions because I want to know what you think and what you’d like to see next. It’s also the night before my birthday so I promise to have a good time and I hope you will too.

15.01.2022 Our exhibition now open 2-14 September at Long Gallery Salamanca. Opened today by the Lord Mayor. Thanks so much Anna. Photos by Charles Chadwick.

12.01.2022 Ok, who's got a carousel slide projector or an overhead projector in working order that I can film? Pretty please.

12.01.2022 A great web site with thousands of amazing pictures.

12.01.2022 I have the opportunity to have another Beattie's Studio night at the Tea Rooms in October, near my birthday. Current limits would allow only 18 and the price including high tea would be about $35 per person. (scaling down costs more and I'd hire a better projector) So here's the thing. Who's up for it? What would you like to see? I'm thinking an old time Magic Lantern Show?

10.01.2022 Working furiously on an episode on Elizabeth Street, due out before the end of the year.

04.01.2022 John & Maria Grist have an exhibition at The Long Gallery on now. They have a fascinating collection of images of kunanyi / Mt Wellington from the 19th and 20th centuries. The huts, tracks, snow, rangers and nature, it's all there. They kindly shared some of their lantern slides with me and wrote me a script for this episode. I think you'll like it. https://youtu.be/yI0OiMsLoIE

04.01.2022 800 subscribers to my channel, thank you so much ABC and everyone who checked it out. I’m inspired to make more. Off to Elizabeth Street so watch out if you see me with a camera.

04.01.2022 Old Hobart Town is a miniature replica of Hobart in the 1820’s, offering a unique and interesting glimpse into the early history of both Australia and Tasmania,... along with it’s notorious and harsh convict past. Being built from original plans it offers an accurate look at Hobart 200 years ago, full of history and is fun for all ages. Open daily from 9am last entry 4.30 pm See more

04.01.2022 Thank you, I had a great night.
