In Adelaide Court on Monday Lilian Bennett was fined 2 pounds 10 shillings in all for exceeding the speed limit when driving a motor car along King William Road on October 10." Today’s money: $203.40. Lilian with her brooding good looks was an accomplished horsewoman and one of the first women to drive a motor vehicle and to ride a Harley Davidson. She lived in Beaumont House for 57 years. Go girl.

23.01.2022 Has anyone seen the resident Koala's lately in the trees at Beaumont House?

22.01.2022 Father's Day Challenge Answer - Looking through the hatch of the underground water tank. The underground water tank was installed by the Vincents who lived at Beaumont House during the period 1907 to 1911. The tank has a capacity of 34,000 litres and can be seen just a few steps east of the house adjacent the gravel driveway.... A well with a windmill (legs still visible) is located on edge of the Olive Grove behind the red sheds. The windmill pumped the water from the well to the main underground tank and the tank under the Kitchen. A bore with a submersible pump now supplies the tank only for use in the garden.

19.01.2022 To many of us, the announcement of the Royal Adelaide Show evokes fond memories of show treats, rides, showbags, animals and a day of fun with family and friends. Perhaps getting up early after having saved pocket money for a year to indulge in fairy floss and enjoy the excitement of the fair. To see the best in agriculture and horticulture, it is South Australian pride at its best. It is one of our most popular events, now cancelled due to covid-19 and in the past from the S...panish Flu pandemic. Take a look at these pictures from some of the earliest shows in our state. In 1840, the first city produce show was held in the yards of Fordham’s Hotel, Grenfell Street. In 1843, the first Livestock show was held at Payne’s Hotel yards on Hindley Street. Sir Samuel Davenport was president of the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society 1873-1879 and 1890-1891. The Jubilee Exhibition Building and grounds on North Terrace became the home of the show from 18951925. 2020 organisers of the show have offered us an online alternative however nothing surpasses the sounds, smells, and atmosphere. We look forward to attending once again the Royal Adelaide Show in 2021. Photo acknowledgements: Adelaide City Council archives Art Gallery SA

17.01.2022 Walking the Common - In 1849, Sir Samuel Davenport set a piece of land aside purely to enjoy by Adelaide residents. To this day it is still a peaceful haven with glimpses of the ocean. The magnificent woodland trees include Grey Box and SA Blue Gum and an original Native Pine. Photos courtesy of City of Burnside.... https://www.burnside.sa.gov.au/ See more

15.01.2022 Beaumont Families - Kirribilli House Dutch Colonial in its style, this beguiling house on The Common was once owned by Alfred Scammell of Faulding Pharmaceuticals. The Common was once fenced and gated and the key could only be obtained by residents of the Village of Beaumont. In the early 20th century the fence and gates were removed.

09.01.2022 Beaumont House Collections Challenge Answer - It is indeed a prayer chair! Well done Marilyn :) Prayer chairs were specially designed to be kneeled on, elbows are resting on top or where a book is placed. It was made specifically for the purpose of quiet reflection and prayer. The one illustrated is a modern reproduction of Bishop Short’s prayer chair.... Feisty Bishop Augustus Short (pictured) was the first Anglican minister in South Australia and in 1847 there were only two Church of England congregations in town Holy Trinity and St John’s. When Bishop Short became displeased with one, his coachman would take his favourite chair to the other. Bishop Short’s legacy to South Australia is the marvellous St Peter’s Cathedral which he planned and successfully implemented over many years.
