20.01.2022 ‘Countering and speaking against the myths of ‘non-existence’ of palawa, Tasmanian Aboriginal, people, the multiple self-portraits of face to face to face demand an acknowledgement of my historic and contemporary resistance to the onslaught of colonialism. I am asking how many times do I have to validate my identity as a palawa woman? How can I get to expose my history? I am repeatedly asserting my presence and claiming my identity as a proud, palawa woman.’ Opening this... Friday at @kuiperprojects in the city, is ‘face to face to face’ by @mandyquadrio . Mandy Quadrio is a proud palawa woman with strong connections to her ancestral countries of the Coastal Plains Nation and the Oyster Bay Nation of North and East Tasmania. Her sculptural use of found objects and natural materials, such as Tasmanian bull kelp, seeks to bring attention to historical, cultural and political events that have been, and continue to be, ignored and buried by Australian colonial histories. Presented by kuiper projects as part of BEAUT. Artist talk Saturday 27 April, 11am. Exhibition is open 10am-2pm 26 & 27 April, 3 & 4 May. Shop 11, Anzac Square Arcade, 198 Adelaide St, Brisbane, Queensland Australia 4000. #beaut19 See more

05.01.2022 ‘Picnicking is far from a simple affair in eastern India. In a land where the fleeting months of December to February offer the only time to ‘enjoy’ the otherwise unbearable tropical sun, picnicking is a winter pastime that’s taken very, very seriously. This work, done between 2013 and 2015 takes a look at this phenomenon.’ ‘My aim with photography is to question what it means to be a photographer in the digital age while simultaneously playing the role of observer and com...mentator on critical issues. I pursue narratives on seemingly disparate topics- forced migration, surveillance in the digital panopticon, disappearing islands, nocturnal realms and psychosomatic stress of captive animals to name a few. Although every narrative I explore is separate and different from the next, together they form threads of inquiry into the existential dilemmas of our times.’ Arko Datto will be exhibiting a selection of images from the ‘PIK-NIK’ series at @outerspace.ari As part of BEAUT19, opening Friday 26 April. 05.01.2022 Join us at The Walls on the Gold Coast tomorrow night for a screening of ‘Songs from the Nusantara,’ a audiovisual presentation curated by Vignes Balasingam. Screening starts at 6:30pm. KHIEV KANEL (CAMBODIA), ARKO DATTO (INDIA), AGAN HARAHAP (INDONESIA), SHYUE WOON (SINGAPORE), SENTHIL KUMARAN (INDIA), MINZAYAR OO (MYANMAR), VEEJAY VILLAFRANCA (PHILIPPINES), MUHAMMAD FADLI (INDONESIA) The Nusantara is a geographical state of being. The word Nusantara comes from two words, Nu...sa, meaning the seas and tara, meaning what lies in between. The Nusantara in this sense refers to the cultural identities of the lands which are now Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, The Philippines and Thailand, through its connection with the seas that bind them. The historical and spiritual identity of the archipelago and its subcontinent pair is echoed through the idea of the Nusantara the power of the fluid and the intangible and its ability to influence and weave together the tangible and objective. The curation is a contemporary poem about our collective identities in the 21st century. Stories of social rebirth, war and the micro-movements of our societies which may have larger implications on ourselves - the children of seafarers. This is my own journey in seeking out the faint echoes of a past that still thrives between the cracks of our collective geographical history. Image from Rebel Riders by Muhammad Fadli.
