21.01.2022 I am missing all my lovely clients but I’m always thinking of ways we could all try something to pamper ourselves a little.....:. Who do I know that is using a collagen supplement? Or is maybe interested to learn more about collagen? For centuries, Chinese women have viewed collagen as a fountain of youth. Even Kim Kardashian drinks a hot collagen drink each morning. ... It is beauty from the inside out. Known to improve skin elasticity, firmness and wrinkle reduction (not to mention ease joint pain, promote wound healing and prevent muscle wasting) and has become the hottest beauty trend in 2020!! So what is Collagen? ‘It is the body’s scaffolding! It’s the glue that holds us together’ says New York dermatologist Dr Whitney Bowe. Collagen makes up 80% of our skins deeper dermal layer providing volume that keeps skin looking plump and keeping lines at bay. The rich amino acids that create collagen also repair and maintain your tendons, bones and joints. As we get older we break it down faster than we replace it. From age 20 we start losing 1% per year and we lose as much as 30% in the first 5 years of menopause!! Injectable collagen is no longer favoured as it doesn’t last and can cause reactions and creams don’t absorb down to the dermal layer. However studies are showing impressive results from ingesting it in supplement form. However, there are a million brands and types out there and not all live up to their names. So how do you know which one to choose? There are 3 predominant collagens - types I, II & III Type 1 is 90% of our body’s collagen found predominantly in the hair, skin and nails. The best source of type I is marine collagen. Type II is less prevalent in the body and is renowned for joint health. It is best sourced from bovine and chicken that is grass fed, no antibiotics or hormones. Type III serves the bones integrity and for the blood circulation system vessels strength. Marine collagen is type 1 and is up to 1.5 times more absorbent than bovine/chicken collagen due to its lower molecular weight making it more bioavailable and more easily absorbed by the body.
