25.01.2022 It’s important to remember that even in unprecedented times like this, you can still get a normal cold or the flu. All viruses other than Coronavirus have not disappeared. Infact, you are more likely to get a cold or flu than Covid! Here are some tips to help your immune system cope with the changes of winter and the dreaded flu season. One more recommendation to help you stay healthy is Probiotics! Not just for the flu but for everything from the common cold to skin and ev...en allergies. Probiotics have been shown to reduce episodes of acute upper respiratory tract infections and decrease antibiotic use and school absences. They are also a very important adjunct to your health regime, and can help reduce dependence on antibiotics and sick days for you and your family. If you are like me and don’t enjoy fermented foods (a Naturopath who hates fermented foods?!) then you should take a probiotic in supplement form as either a capsule or a powder. . . . #naturopath #naturalmedicine #selflove #illawarra #functionalmedicine #telehealthnaturopath #naturalmedicine #holistichealth #healthy #afterpayavailable #functionalmedicine See more

24.01.2022 Herbs have been used for their pain relief properties for centuries. Instead of automatically reaching for the ibuprofen (which obviously didn’t exist hundreds of years ago), people would use herbs to reduce pain and fever. The pro’s with herbs is that most lack the side effects that harsher and stronger pain relief meds do and are a lot gentler on the gastrointestinal tract. Head over to the blog and check out the different herbs used for pain relief and fever and what type ...of pain they are best used for. . . . . . . #naturopathicmedicine #modernapothecary #naturalhealth #quarantineherbs #illawarra #covid19101 #naturopath #comeongethealthy See more

23.01.2022 While there is certainly a time and place for conventional antibiotics, taking them can drastically change the amounts and types of bacteria within the gut microbiota, especially in early life.In fact, only one week of antibiotics can change the makeup of the gut microbiota for up to a year! Studies have shown that changes to the gut microbiota caused by excessive antibiotic use in early life may even increase the risk of weight gain and obesity, not to mention the immediat...e effects on the Immune system, skin and digestion! Importantly, the overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, making them ineffective at killing disease-causing bacteria. Antibiotics made up for 14 908,476 prescriptions in 2018 (could not find recent data at short notice) which is mind blowing! Respiratory tract infections are the most common reason for an antibiotic prescription and more than a third of the prescriptions aren’t appropriate for that condition. We can start limiting our use by trusting our bodies ability to heal itself, and it will do just that if we give it every opportunity. Stay healthy, get adequate rest and sunlight, reduce stress and take care of your mental health. If you feel like you have taken a lot of antibiotics are are sick often, book an appointment. 22.01.2022 Histamine Intolerance Pt 2. Histamine and Mental Health While histamine intolerance isn’t considered a mental illness in itself, it does cause a number of psychiatric symptoms. Due to the levels of histamine and DAO Enzyme being difficult to detect unless the practitioner is using per ratio pathology testing, those suffering from histamine related mental symptoms are often diagnosed with depression or anxiety. After this diagnosis they would be prescribed most commonly with a... Selective Serotonin Re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) or whats commonly known as an antidepressant. Due to the increases in histamine not being regulated or decreased by said SSRI, the symptoms usually wont subside.so begins the cycle of trying numerous drugs to ease the mental symptoms. Histamine inhibits GABA (a neurotransmitter responsible for facilitating messages between your brain cells). Low or compromised levels of GABA have been associated with mania episodes and insomnia in those suffering from Bipolar Disorder. Fight or Flight and Panic disorders can be contributed to the increase in Epinephrine and Noradrenaline. Histamine causes blood vessels to widen and as a result, there is less resistance when the heart pumps blood causing blood pressure to drop. This event triggers a response from the cardiovascular system called Tachycardia (increased heart rate). Both of these events together result in the body assuming it is under immediate threat and causing panic and anxiety symptoms. Other cognitive changes due to irregular levels of histamine include diminished attention and memory, irritability, anger, OCD and low mood. There have been instances where mental health conditions such as Schizophrenia have been better treated with antihistamines rather than convention antipsychotics. . next up: Part 3 - Histamine and Reproduction . . . 21.01.2022 Thyroid Disorders pt1. What is the Thyroid and what does it do? The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located that lies at the base of your neck and rests on either side of larynx. It produces a hormone that is required for a number of important actions within the body called thyroid hormone (TH). TH plays a major role in how our bodies function and an imbalance of TH can impact your energy level, moods, weight (loss or gain), metabolism, heart rate, cholesterol level...s, bones, bowel habits and women’s menstrual cycles. There really isn’t much that isn’t impacted by too much or too little thyroid hormone. 20.01.2022 Women's Health Week is a nation-wide campaign of events and online activities, all centred on improving women's health and helping to make healthier choices. Maybe for some of us this week is all about asking ourselves: When did I last have a Mammogram or do a breast self check? . Am I due for a Pap test? .... Should I book in for a skin check? (yes, you totally should!) . Jump on the phone and book all of the above if you are overdue. . This week might be about making changes to your health that you have been holding off for a while and that's ok too. Need more sleep? need to stress less or get that bloating under control? These are things I can help with. It’s traditionally used to prevent and also reduce the severity and length of viral infections especially those affecting the respiratory tract.... It’s great for those with weakened or compromises immune systems to give the immune system a reboot. 17.01.2022 Over the coming weeks I will be introducing a deep dive series covering a different health topic each week. If there is an area you want more health info on, please send me a message. Happy reading Pt 1. We’ve all heard the word histamine, likely when discussing seasonal allergies and hives because in order to get rid of the awful itchy eyes and runny nose we need to take something called an anti-histamine and once we do, all those annoying little symptoms seem to go away, ...or do they? If you experience any of these symptoms but have been unable to find a resolution, read on. Common symptoms of Histamine Intolerance Headaches/migraines Difficulty falling asleep Hypertension Vertigo or dizziness Arrhythmia, or accelerated heart rate Difficulty regulating body temperature Anxiety Nausea, vomiting Abdominal cramps Flushing Nasal congestion, sneezing, difficulty breathing Abnormal menstrual cycle Hives Fatigue Tissue swelling (Edema) Histamines are actually incredibly complex and are responsible for a plethora of our bodily functions and reactions. It is both a neurotransmitter as well as an immunomodulator. As a neurotransmitter histamine works to control the sleep-wake cycle. It may decrease GABA levels and increase norepinephrine (fight or flight) and epinephrine (Adrenaline) levels, hello anxiety!! It also significantly influences neuroendocrine control which includes biological rhythms, stress, reproduction, behavioural state, energy metabolism, thermoregulation and fluid balance. Elevated histamine may also affect thyroid function. H3 receptors can also be called inhibitory receptors. They can inhibit neurotransmitters such as dopamine, GABA and serotonin. When H3 is blocked, histamine increases resulting in a flood of excess of Adenaline and Norepinephrine, which is a reason many believe histamines are related to anxiety and ADD. When it comes to immunomodulation you can look at it like the rude bouncer at the front of the club, he’s picky and if he thinks you’re up to no good he will use his powers to keep you out. This is the allergy response we often talk about with H1 receptors being primarily responsible for this response. H1 are found in the smooth muscles causing reactions like hives, difficulty breathing and asthma. H4 also leads to allergies via a different mechanism. Depending on where in the body the histamine is produced, and what receptor it interacts with, histamine can elicit a multitude of reactions. There are different types and each are found in different parts of the body and when activated have distinctly different effects on the body. The most common causes of HI are: Allergies (IgE reactions) Bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) Leaky gut GI bleeding Diamine Oxidase (DAO) deficiency Histamine-rich foods What next? Tune in for Pt 2: Histamine & Mental Health

14.01.2022 Part 3 - Histamine and Reproduction It might surprise a lot of people that histamine and estrogen have a very close relationship, when things are out of balance it could even be considered toxic! Many women complain of worsening allergies around the time of their period and once you have read this, it will make total sense. There are three types of Estrogen that is naturally formed within the body; Estrone (E1) - the only type of estrogen naturally produced by your body after... menopause. Estradiol (E2) - at its most abundant in childbearing years. Estriol (E3) - the main estrogen utilised during pregnancy. Histamine is most affected by E2. High levels of E2 increase histamine and histamine triggers the production of more E2, resulting in a vicious circle that has detrimental results on health. This is likely the reason why the symptoms of both estrogen dominance and Histamine excess are almost identical - its likely the individual has both. Irregular menstruation and excess bleeding is common in excess levels of estrogen and histamine. High ovarian histamine levels have also been linked to increased ovulation which might sound exciting if you are hoping to start a family, until I tell you that those eggs produced from histamine induced ovulation are immature eggs. The fertilisation of immature eggs is almost nil. Are all eggs like this in fertile women with estrogen excess? We don’t know for sure, although it is likely for some women. High histamine has also been linked to high blood pressure which can be detrimental in pregnancy as histamine levels in the body increase almost 1000 fold in the last trimester. The way that a medical professional tests for early indications of pre eclampsia is measuring the Diamine oxidase (DAO) levels within the blood. This is the enzyme mentioned previously in pt.1 that breaks down histamine in the body. . . . Disclaimer: This information is solely for the purpose of education. 13.01.2022 Don’t over react but get your body prepared. I would usually post something like this before winter rolls around however Ive been reluctant this year due to the COVID-19 reaction. The only advice I can offer you at this time is be as healthy as possible. Eat well, sleep well, wash your hands well and encourage everyone to do the same. Besides that, you can boost your immune system to either ward off or reduce the effects of colds, flu and viruses. We’ve done this in our house... by making some delicious high strength vit C gummies worth around 1200 mcg per day and Elderberry Gummies. I have noticed Sambucol disappearing off the shelves, it seems the general population is starting to recognise the benefits of this tiny little wonder berry! Recent research articles identified that black elderberry directly inhibits the flu virus’s entrance into cells and also inhibits its replication in the body. It can also strengthen your immune response to the virus and inhibit the early stages of infection by blocking key viral proteins responsible for viral attachment and entry into your bodies cells. . . . 13.01.2022 A Naturopaths role in treating those with Endometriosis begins with stimulation of the body’s innate ability to heal through restoring healthy inflammatory response, managing pain, balancing hormones, and aiding the liver’s ability to break down environmental toxins and naturally occurring estrogens. It’s also important to note that studies have suggested hysterectomies are not entirely effective when ovaries are left intact, with endometrium tissue then growing in other parts of the body resulting in more pain, damage to the Bowel and potential Bowel surgery.

11.01.2022 Do you poke your tongue out and assess it when you are looking in the mirror? You probably should, it can tell you alot about your state of health, particularly Gut health. I remember when I was in my high school biology class and the teacher asked all of us to take a swab of our inner cheek and tongue it put it under the microscope. Back then all I could think was ‘YUCK!’. Now all these years later I know that there are billions of bacteria living in the mouth, both good a...nd bad types and your tongue can tell you when the bad bacteria launch mutiny on all the good guys trying to keep your health and teeth in check. A red raw and sore looking tongue is an indication of an inflamed gut which could be caused by IBD, food allergies or sensitivities or chronic maldigestion. A fissured or cracked tongue can be a sign of Psoriasis, which will usually be evident on the nails as well. Looking closely at the nail you may notice small pin like pricks and ridges. This type of Psoriasis has also been linked to Crohn’s Disease. A white or yellow coated tongue indicates a toxic build up in the digestive system. A creamy white or yellow coating is often evidence of bacterial overgrowth such as Candida (systemic or oral thrush). 05.01.2022 We often take our sleep for granted, skipping the Z’s to partake in social activities, answer emails and get jobs around the house done. Doing this over a prolonged period will cause damage to your wellbeing. Sleep is a basic human need. Adequate sleep helps us feel better. Following a good night of sleep, we feel active, alert, energetic, and happier. However, night after night of short or disrupted sleep will affect our ability to do our daily activities and reduce our qua...lity of life. Less than seven hours per night is associated with obesity. The shorter the sleep, the higher the BMI. Sleep loss also undermines weight loss efforts, partly because it affects hormones associated with satiety and hunger. People with less than five hours of sleep per night are 2.5 times more likely to have diabetes and 15% higher rate of all-cause mortality compared to those who sleep seven to eight hours. Besides diabetes, sleep apnea is also associated with high blood pressure and increased stroke risk. It’s also important to note that catching up on lost sleep over the weekend won’t override the sleep you have missed out on, once it’s gone, sadly its gone. How can I get a better nights sleep? According to the sleep foundation, Keep a consistent sleep schedule where your life allows. Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends or during vacations. Set a bedtime that is early enough for you to get at least 7 hours of sleep. Don’t go to bed unless you are sleepy. If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Make your bedroom quiet and relaxing. Keep the room at a comfortable, cool temperature. Limit exposure to bright light in the evenings. Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime. If you are hungry at night, eat a light, healthy snack.
