25.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY! History was made at Lytton, a suburb of Brisbane on 9 August 1963 when the Premier of Queensland Hon. G. F. R. Nicklin, M.L.A. performed the ceremony of breaking the ground for the construction of the 21-milion oil refinery to be built at Lytton by Ampol. The Lytton Refinery marked several firsts it was the first refinery built in Queensland, the first financed entirely by Australian capital and the first wholly owned by an Australian Company. Bechtel was... responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction. According to media records of the time, Mr. Nicklin drove a bulldozer to break the first earth for the official start of site preparation. As he pressed the starter button of the bulldozer it automatically exploded the dirt pile. Ground preparatory work on the refinery began ten days later. The construction of the refinery was completed in less than two years and set a benchmark for the Australian industry. The Caltex Lytton Refinery is the only crude oil refinery still operating in Queensland & New South Wales. It produces all grades of petrol, jet and diesel for the domestic market through its 15 operating units. Image: Ampol

23.01.2022 Look. At. That. Face (the Wombat!) Today is International Wombat Day and it made us think of our favourite wombat, the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat and the AWESOME Volunteers at Safe Haven - AACE in Mt Larcom, west of Gladstone in Queensland. The Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat is Queensland’s most endangered marsupial with a population of approximately 200 known individuals and our friends at Safe Haven not only care for sick and injured wildlife but also run dedicated breedi...ng programs for both Hairy Nosed Wombats and Bridled Nail Tail Wallabies. In 2009 a captive breeding and research centre for Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats was established by AACE in partnership with the University of Queensland. This centre provides healthy animals for captive management and breeding to contribute to the recovery of the critically endangered Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat. During the construction of the Curtis Island LNG projects, Bechtel supported a number of Safe Haven initiatives to help give some of Australia’s most at risk native wildlife a fighting chance at survival. This included the donation of and air-conditioned animal hospital, student accommodation and amenity block to upgrade facilities for wildlife warriors who look after the Haven. Safe Haven is a not for profit and relies on volunteers and support from donations in order to maintain their high level of support for the native animals in their care. They have a number of activities for people to become involved in including their volunteer programs, research programs, fundraising events, adopt-a-wombat program, traineeships and school programs. For more information or to make a donation visit: Safe Haven - AACE

20.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY! Today, we are reflecting on the original Dongara Pinjarra (Parmelia) Pipeline, in Western Australia, and how Bechtel Pacific worked with local contractors to build this important part of WA's infrastructure. The pipeline commenced construction in January 1971 and the first issue of The Australian Pipeliner published in March 1972 featured a story on the construction titled How the West Was Won.... The job involved the building of 258 miles of 14 inch pipeline from Pinjarra, 60 miles south of Perth, to Dongara, about 200 miles north of Perth. It also involved the construction of about 12 miles of 8 inch and 4 inch lateral lines. The purpose was to bring natural gas from the Dongara Gas fields to Perth, the Kwinana Power Station, and Alcoa operations at Kwinana and Pinjarra. Many of the crew who had worked alongside Bechtel Pacific on the Moonee pipeline worked together to build this project as well. The lateral pipelines were sub-contracted to McConnell Dowell, in those days a very small company in fact, so small they had to borrow a tractor bending shoe from Red Ru in order to bend the 8 inch pipe. https://www.pipeliner.com.au//building-the-dongara-pinjar/

09.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY In the days where the PPE you needed to work on site was far different from today, workers are seen here constructing the jetty at Cape Lambert in 1971. Bechtel project managed the overall construction of the facility which is located near Point Sampson in WA and is one of Rio Tinto's main Iron Ore export facilities in the region. The jetty, which is pictured here under construction by Clough was the second longest in Australia - at 2.6 kilometres long. At... 19.9 metres above Indian Spring low water, it was also the tallest in Australia and one of the tallest in the world. The wharf also holds or shares every Australian bulk handling records. There are many jetties that claim to be the longest in Australia and the longest in the Southern Hemisphere including Busselton Jetty in WA. At 1.8km Busselton is the longest timber-piled jetty (pier) in the southern hemisphere. Port Germein Jetty, in SA also claims the title, but is 1.6km long. As far as we can tell, Cape Lambert still remains as the second longest in Australia and perhaps the Southern Hemisphere, with QLD's Lucinda Sugar Wharf taking the title for first at 5.76 km.

05.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY! Bechtel's first work in Australia was building a pipeline for the Mobil Oil Company in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1954. The Altona refinery commenced operations in June 1949, as part of a joint venture between Vacuum Oil Company (Mobil) and Standard Oil (Exxon), initially making lubricating oil and bitumen from imported crude oil. ... At an initial construction cost of 1m, it was widely acknowledged as an enormous investment during the post-World War 2 period. The Altona refinery was at that time, the most modern of its kind in the world - a reputation that was bolstered when the refinery undertook a 20m project to extend its product range into motor vehicle fuels and produce Australia’s first locally manufactured aviation gasoline. It was this expansion that gave Bechtel the opportunity to do our first work in Australia and establish our first design office, located in Melbourne. The project commenced in 1954 and engineering design services were provided for pump stations and an underground pipeline that followed the paved Williamson Road to connect the refinery to the the ship loading facility. Construction was very different in those days and we found this great video which showcases the level of effort required to build a world class facility in the 1940's before the big machines we have building our projects today. The footage of how things were done, and how sparsely populated the area was in those days is quite amazing. Enjoy!
