25.01.2022 HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A DOG WITH A YELLOW RIBBON TIED TO THEIR COLLAR? If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon tied to their collar, do not approach it, pet or other...wise bother them in any way. While it's a good idea to take this stance with any dog you're not familiar with, The Yellow Dog Project is a global movement trying to popularize the use of yellow ribbons as a way to educate and alert people about dogs who need their space. Yellow Dogs are not necessarily aggressive or dangerous, but might have issues with fear or be in pain due to recent surgery. If approached, such a dog could snap, growl or become anxious and stressed, which is what the yellow ribbon is intended to prevent. The Yellow Dog Project was founded in 2013 to support dogs who are anxious and may display reactive behaviors if approached. The color yellow was chosen for ribbons because it's widely understood as a cautionary color. In addition to dogs who may be fearful or in pain, dogs wearing yellow ribbons may be rescue or shelter dogs who have behavioral problems they haven't yet overcome. They may also be dogs in training to be work or service dogs. http://www.theyellowdogproject.com/Home.html

23.01.2022 BREED OF THE WEEK // The Border Collie The Border Collie was originally bred to gather and control sheep in the hilly country between Scotland and England. Duri...ng these times, the Border Collie would sometimes run up to 80km a day whilst on the job. Their great stamina, working drive and endless bursts of energy add up to make them the most renowned herding breed. The Border Collie is one of few breeds which are still used today for their original purpose. They do not stray far from their roots, and can typically have a higher prey drive than other breeds. Their natural instinct to chase and move animals (and moving objects) is what makes them so effective. This needs to be understood by their owners so that they do not involuntarily build their drive. The Border Collie can be easily trained as they are highly intelligent. As a matter of fact, the Border Collie has been ranked as the world’s smartest breed with second and third being the Poodle and German Shepherd! They typically live 12-15 years, weigh 13-20kg and stand 45-55cm tall. They usually have a medium long coat in black and white, but other colours such as brown, blue merle, red, and tricolor with white can also be found in some Border Collies. This breed is great for active owners who wish for a companion to join them on walks, runs, and hikes. A happy Border Collie is one with a job to do. Mental stimulation in addition to physical stimulation is very important. Do you have a Border Collie? Share Your Snaps!

19.01.2022 So you want a Border Collie Puppy? There is one really important piece of advice I can give you. If one or both parent's noses look like they are flaky, peeling, scabby, have sores, are bleeding, have ulcers ....... no matter what the breeder's excuse ...... even slightly ...... walk away! It is not worth the risk of a welcoming the pain, inconvenience, expense & sorrow into your lives. If the nose looks funny - forget it! And - if people keep buying these puppies, their bree...ders will keep breeding puppies who may suffer from Discoid Lupus. The only way to stop the spread is to stop purchasing the puppies! The breeders know. There is no genetic testing. If a breeder says their vet said it was not Discoid Lupus, don't put your trust in that. It doesn't develop until after 18 months usually & can vary. Diagnosis is via histology from biopsies ....... & can be hit & miss. A negative one month can become a positive the next. Don't take the risk. Wait. Find an ethical breeder & enjoy a puppy who will have a healthy & long life.

19.01.2022 Today is my self appointed "Day of Moose" also to be known as "Raines awareness Day" Canine dental hypomineralization or Raine Syndrom is a genetic disorder aff...ecting Border Collies. The disorder causes severe tooth wear resulting in pulpitis and requiring extraction of those teeth. Dental hypomineralization is a canine model for human Raine Syndrome.Dental examination of the affected dogs reveals a significant wear. Lower incisor teeth can be worn close to the gingival margin. The enamel shows a light brown discoloration and appears dull. Some worn teeth can have a pulp exposure and pulpits as a result of the wear. This disease in varying severity can be increadibly painful for the dog. And many dogs will loose all their teeth by the age of 3yo and the pain can cause negative impacts on the dogs behaviour. Luckily, we had Pet Insurance to cover the almost 25k spent on capping, removing and maintaining Mooses teeth, now to be left at 6yo with only three canines. The disease is also usually not diagnosed due to unknowing vets who are not aware of the disease blaming it on tennis balls or stick chewing - excessive wear of the teeth is NOT normal!! If you are not convinced - get a second opinion! We still meet many vets and breeders who have never heard of this disease! Moose was unlucky - testing for this diseases was not available when he was born, and for many years he went mis diagnosed. But now testing is available! There is no excuse! Only you - the new owner or "consumer" can ensure your chosen, researched, responsible breeder is testing for genetic diseases such as Raines Syndrome. Ensure you ask the right questions!
