23.01.2022 This is so beautiful, so wonderful and so bang on correct. Only thing is, I wish I’d written it. Read to fill your heart. B https://www.huffpost.com//i-know-what-causes-autism_b_6503
22.01.2022 Tomorrow's plan is to write and film a series of blogs and video blogs addressing homeschooling, routine, balancing working from home and managing children, dealing with anxiety, energy, headspace and other issues associated with remote learning and isolation to give some support, structure and ideas to you all. Parents and students: What would YOU like to see addressed in these blogs/vlogs? What are YOU finding most difficult in this current situation?... Please either comment below or send me a personal message. And feel free to share to parents and students who might also benefit. B :-)
22.01.2022 Spot on, Greta. If you learn to embrace your differences and harness your energy and channel it in the right direction, then what is labelled as a disorder becomes powerful, unique and amazing!! There are no limits, only those which we impose upon ourselves. https://www.google.com.au//B167A486-DF0F-11E9-90C0-F2AE1DF
20.01.2022 Both Monday and Thursday secondary study skills/organisation seminars for next week are completely full... if you missed out, please get in contact with me in a personal message or email: [email protected] and I’ll put you on the list for when I’m doing future sessions. Looking forward to seeing everyone who has registered next week. B
20.01.2022 Announcement: my home office is now in full swing! SUCCESS!! Yesterday I successfully zoomed 9 of my regular Saturday kids in half hour sessions and it all worked and we had a great time! Yes, it was a little different and we have to get used to being able to send stuff through to each other before our meetings, but on the whole it all was not that much different. My regulars will continue and I am also putting together packages for assessments, tailored programs for new st...udents who might need some support and also micro sessions for kids to check in for as little as 15 minutes at a time. Message me for more information.
18.01.2022 You well may be asking: Who is this odd man? and why is he on my Becky Blake Study Skills Rockstar page? His name is Richard Pascoe and he is Adelaide's tech guy. You might have heard him on one of his numerous radio appearances. He's the one who can put computer tech talk into layman's terms for the technologically challenged such as myself. I've worked on my systems with Richard for many years; he keeps everything running amazingly well, makes me think I can actually manag...e all this tech stuff and is a gem of a man. So yesterday Richard made sure all my Skype connections are ship shape, given the fact we are moving towards social isolation. In the next few days I'll be posting all about how this is going to work so that at least some of the 50-odd kids who pass through my doors each week (and their parents!) will be able to continue their mentoring and tutoring when the time comes. I'll also be posting ideas to help us all get through this tough time without going insane. Stay tuned....
17.01.2022 Oh the joys of Christmas holidays! My day is consisting of attempting to drag my teenager out of bed at 10am and trying to be creative with ideas to keep my busy 9 year old amused. Today we are going for a walk on the beach and icing honey biscuits with their cousins. They’re also making place cards for Christmas lunch. Here’s one of my blogs with some ideas on how to survive the holiday break. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and see you with 20/20 vision in the new ...year. 16.01.2022 This is really lovely. Explaining and facilitating processing is a really important part of helping tweens and teens understand themselves. This gives them confidence and helps form the very neural pathways the lady in this article is talking about. Cognitive behavioural therapy is the backbone of my work with kids and the results are fantastic. As parents, we don’t always have the answers, but the key is finding the time to sit, talk, read and discuss the PROCESS with your ...child. Communication is everything. If you’re struggling with that with your tween or teen, or even your little one at the moment, this article is a good place to start. B https://buff.ly/2VwZVWo
15.01.2022 Happy New Year! Anyone juggling the chutes during January holidays?
11.01.2022 Really excited to be working on my new study skills seminar for secondary school students to kick start 2020. Much of this year I have been delivering similar seminars to international students at Adelaide Uni with fantastic results. The first session for 2020 kicks off on Thursday 6th February and will cover mindset, diary scheduling and study skills and strategies. This will include ideas for improving time management and memory. One parent may attend with each student inclusive in the $35 fee. Book soon as this session will fill quickly. Further sessions may be offered according to demand. Private message or email me for bookings or further information: [email protected]
10.01.2022 Due to the huge popularity of my first Secondary School Seminar, I am opening a second session this coming Monday 3rd February 6:45pm at my Clarence Park office. If you're concerned about your secondary school student's organisational skills, time management and study skills, then this is a great way to kick off the year with everyone on the same page ready for success. PM me for more information or to register, or email [email protected]... PS... the flyer below says "Thursday 6th Feb"; this session has sold out and is no longer available. The same session will be run this Monday, 3rd Feb at 6:45pm. B :-)
09.01.2022 The importance, wonder and beauty of reading. Spend just 15 minutes a day reading with your kids and you will install a lifetime of experience and opportunity. B https://www.blinkist.com//reading-habits-of-highly-success
08.01.2022 Back to school, routines and daily grind...
08.01.2022 Busy times... I'm setting up my home office today and putting together my Skype/Zoom/Facetime program for launch on Saturday. I've trialled a few clients over the past few days and it's all running well; I'm sure after a few sessions we'll get into the rhythm of it and wonder why we didn't do it earlier! I'm lowering my fees for online sessions as we're all struggling with the challenges being thrown at us. More on this over the next few days. I'll also start posting video b...logs on here as of next week (I know I'm an entertainer, but video blogs actually terrify me!), so invite your friends to this site as we ride this wave together over the next few months with as few murders as possible! I'm here to support as we learn to navigate what homeschooling exactly involves. And for everything else, at least there's still wine! B
05.01.2022 This had to be shared! Brilliant! Happy school holidays to everyone. Enjoy the sunshine for a couple of weeks before we figure out where to go from here. B
05.01.2022 How was your weekend? Mine involved: Organising, setting up a pa and performing in two of my own Fringe shows (they went extremely well, but nothing in the background seemed to run smoothly!) Organising and performing in my 9 year old daughter's Fringe show that she wrote and starred in Mentoring 10 kids Organising pizza, cake and an escape room for my daughter and 5 of her friends for her 13th birthday, then driving them all there and back... Being hit by a car (Yep! Physically fine, but shaken!) Shopping for a gift for a birthday party my 9 year old attended Organising/making meals Filling out forms and paying for the week's excursions Working out the logistics of who had be where and how they were going to get there for all of the above, plus ballet and acting classes. I forgot: My 13 year old needed a new pair of ballet shoes My 9 year old needed a new character skirt To factor in time for sleep! Oh well! I must note here, my husband is incredibly helpful in fetching and carrying, dropping into the market and showed initiative and caught and cooked last night's fish dinner, but needs to be told where and how this is all going to happen once I've worked it out. BUT we all do it, don't we? Us mums, holding everything together with packing tape as we desperately try to keep our heads above water. We do it for our kids, to make them happy, to keep them social and healthy and clothed and fed. When I read this article in my morning feed it spoke to me; my weekend ended attempting to have a few moments to myself with half a bottle of wine and forgetting to take my contact lenses out before crashing out... Happy Monday to mums everywhere! https://www.scarymommy.com/motherhood-invisible-workload/
03.01.2022 During these trying times it’s easy for little ones to become frightened and anxious. Actually all of us are to some extent; these are unprecedented times for many generations. The best way you can help ease the anxiety of little ones is to communicate, educate and open up gentle and logical conversation. It is something to be concerned about, but it’s not something to panic about. I particularly like this video from the fabulous guys at Operation Ouch, which, as always, ans...wers kids’ questions scientifically and logically. Perhaps show your kids the video to open up conversation for anyone who is worried. And many adults might find it useful also!! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m2rQV34fr-M
02.01.2022 Wonderful advice from author John Marsden and there are some great ideas here. But there’s a lot to take on... and making for what is huge changes for some parents can be overwhelming and daunting. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day; choose just one idea that you like the sound of. Adapt it to suit you if you need to. Set small goals and take baby steps towards that one thing. Be consistent and patient. This one small thing will have a ripple effect and you’ll see it spill over into other areas. And remember, perfection is not necessary!
02.01.2022 Wow! The response to my Secondary Study Skills session on 6th February has been really popular with only 3 spots left. If you were thinking about coming along, please get in touch soon. It would be a good idea to register your interest with me anyways as I may open up a second session once the first one becomes full. B
