20.01.2022 Whilst most of Australia is seemingly celebrating the AFL grand final this Saturday evening, I'm dialling in (from bed!) to an exciting movie screening live from Hong Kong! Back in the Engage 2 Act days you might remember we held the Wendy Sarkissian Award for Courage in Community Engagement. The award sought to identify and celebrate community engagement practice that goes beyond standard good practice. We received entries from around the world, but the one that stood out ...most was the plight of the Pang Jai Fabric Market in Hong Kong. And so the hawkers and their support crew flew to Melbourne to accept the award, and spoke with so much passion about their vision for their community, and the fight they were having to achieve that vision. It was so lovely to receive a message from Mr Ho to attend the launch of this documentary this evening! I'm watching it with such excitement, even though it's totally in Cantonese with Chinese subtitles! Wendy Sarkissian and I recorded a conversation about these wonderful people a couple of years ago here - https://vimeo.com/251251668 Thank you v-artivist and for having me! --- "Dialogue of places episode 4: Mr Busy: a hawker and his community" movie screening Living in Sham Shu Po and working in a cloth market called Pangjai in the same district, Mr Ho is an extraordinary hawkers. With great motivation and passion in caring for others, Mr. Ho continuously seeks resources and builds connections with the community to fight against the forced evictions of Pangjai. Interestingly, even Mr. Ho has such busy and diverse schedule, he seldom leaves Sham Shui Po.
