24.01.2022 Welcome New Subscribers! Who would have thought the history of beekeeping would be so much fun? Fear not approach! There are no Wasps, there are no Hornets h...ere. Please feel free to comment. The Historical Honeybee Articles - Beekeeping History has recently surpassed 25,000 subscribes, and I wanted to re-post our welcome letter for the new subscribers. -Please Read and share this invite to your bee loving friends. The verse on the image was written by the 17th century poet; Francis Quarles. It was often seen in historic literature on the preface pages in books of Academia as a warm welcome to the reader, -an invitation to come, stay, and learn from the gift presented to them. This verse from Quarles is a fitting way to express a warm welcome to the new subscribers of the Historical Honeybee Articles facebook page. Historical Honeybee Articles Motto: Floriferis ut apes in saltibus omnia libant The above is a Latin phrase by Lucretius; a Roman poet who lived 94 B.C. - 55 B.C., which translates: "As bees, taste of every thing in the flowery meadows." Throughout history, this motto was generally chosen by selectors of literature , who either cull, or affect to cull the beauties of many authors. As bees, taste of every thing in the flowery meadows so do we feed on every golden word scribed down in the history of beekeeping. Floriferis ut apes in saltibus omnia libant is a fitting motto for the Historical Honeybee Articles Archives, which attempts to select from the vast wealth of historical bee literature, for the purpose of sharing with others. All are welcome to share anything posted on this site, for use in your local bee club newsletter or facebook page. All I ask is that you please remember to share a link to this site as the source so others may find this page. Thank You For Subscribing, And Enjoy the History of Beekeeping! Best Wishes, Historical Honeybee Articles Floriferis ut apes in saltibus omnia libant The Image says: I here present thee with a hive of bees, laden some with wax, and some with honey. Fear not approach! There are no Wasps, there are no Hornets here. If some wanton Bee should chance to buzz about thine ears, stand thy ground and hold thy hands: there's none will sting thee if thou strike not first. If any do, she hath honey in her bag will cure thee too. -Francis Quarles. Divine Fancies digested into Epigrams, Meditations and Observations (1632)

16.01.2022 The School Year Has Begun For Many Youngsters. Here is a Lesson for Young Beekeepers Share With Your Friends. Via: Historical Honeybee Articles - Beekeepin...g History Image: Circa 1902 to 1926 - Apis Mellifica School Room Wall Chart by Prof. Dr. Paul Pfurtscheller. Dr. Paul Pfurtscheller was an Austria zoologist, known best for his series of 38 lithograph zoological school charts. He initially designed these pull down charts to use in his own classrooms, but they were quickly recognized as exceptional works, and began being used at the Zoological Institute University. These charts are very rare; printed between 1902 and 1926. ===== The following article not related to above image. circa. 1873 - Lessons for Young Beekeepers Lesson 1 - Natural History 1. To what order of insects does the bee belong? Hymenoptera. 2. Why so named? Hymenoptera is from two Greek words that mean "wing'' and "membrane;" it is applied to all insects that have four membranous wings. 3. To what genus does the honey bee belong? Apidae. 4. Why is it so named? From the Latin Apis, a bee. From this word comes also apiary, apiarian, etc. This word apis is prefixed to some other term to denote the different species of the honey bee. Thus, Apis Mellifica, the common black bee; Apis Ligustica, or Apis Ligurienne, the Italian or Ligurian bee; Apis Fasciata, the Egyptian bee; Apis Indica, the East Indian species, and so on. 5. What is the meaning of Mellifica? It is from two Latin words that mean "honey" and "to make," hence it means "honey-making." It might, with equal propriety, have been applied to any other species besides the black bee. 6. Describe the bee briefly. A bee is a true insect that is, one that has six legs, four wings, and whose body is divided into three distinct parts or segments, called the Head, Thorax, and Abdomen. 7. Describe the head. It is triangular in shape and is furnished with two compound eyes, three simple eyes, and two antennae. 8. Describe the compound eyes. Viewed through the microscope, they seem to be made up of a great number of little eyes, hexagonal in shape and are arranged regularly. They seem to be fixed, incapable of motion. -National Agriculturist. 16.01.2022 Ive just received an email from Phil McPherson the VAA President with regards to hobby beekeeping rules during the Stage 4 COVID lockdown. If you are a hobby beekeeper & your hives are more than 5km away please read ********************************** Dear Bec McBride,... I have received a number of emails requesting advice and assistance to bee keepers who are living under Stage 4 Restrictions. Upon my request, Agriculture Victoria has provided me with this link from the Department of Health and Human Services: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/stage-4-restrictions-summary-co As shown below in this links target, the stage 4 restrictions do allow for people to leave their 5 km restriction zone to care for animals. Can I leave home to care for animals located on property other than my place of residence? Yes, including on property greater than 5km from your usual residence, but you should limit travel where you can. If you need to leave home to attend to your animals, the restrictions travel with you and so you need to abide by the same rules as if you were at home. You should wear a mask and practise good hygiene, including washing and sanitising hands before and after handling animals and their equipment, bedding or food. Fellow beekeepers, please remember that personal safety is our highest priority and that having people mixing in the community is a sure vector for the viruss spread. I urge you to be patient, stay isolated, keep informed and be kind to each other. Yours Sincerely Phil McPherson VAA Inc President

05.01.2022 Update from AHBIC (Australian Honey Bee Industry Council. APIS FLOREA IN BRISBANE On Sunday 1 November, 2020 a container was unloaded from an international vessel at Brisbane port and there was an Apis florea (red dwarf honey bee or dwarf honey bee) nest on the container. ... At this time the bees have been killed, a queen has been found. Further examination of these bees has taken place and no external mites were detected following an ethanol wash of the bees. Examination for tracheal mites is not planned. With the capture of the queen, there is negligible risk that any absconding bees could establish a new colony. Sweep netting is being carried out in the area but it is not expected that any more bees will be found. Trevor Weatherhead, AHBIC Chair and Robert Dewar, QBA President, have been down to the port and been briefed on what occurred. As more information comes to hand it will be passed on. Trevor Weatherhead AM AHBIC Chair 5 November 2020

The demonstrated dial is the new & updated style. Wholesale enquiring welcome for bulk quantities.
