13.01.2022 There is no denying that the English language is a complex code to learn. As adults who have mastered the alphabetic code, it is often difficult to remember how it became automatic for us. The answer is explicit, systematic teaching. We need to build on a child's knowledge in a gradual way and allow them to feel success and build confidence with every step! The picture below is a good reminder of just how complex it is for beginning readers!

02.01.2022 Notice comprehension at the top of the building blocks? Yes, it is the ultimate reason that we read, to understand and enjoy text. BUT, so often children have a problem with comprehension and we try and teach comprehension skills. Notice fluency and vocabulary, the building blocks under comprehension? A lack of fluency and understanding of the words they read are so often the problem when it comes to comprehension.
