The above illustration highlights the ideal body weight to sinkage ratio and alternatively what happens when a mattress is too firm or too soft. The position that you commonly sleep in should be factored into your mattress firmness selection. For Side-Sleepers its ideal to have a soft to medium mattress to absorb the hips and shoulders.... Back-Sleepers should opt for a medium to firm mattress to easily distribute your weight across the entire mattress. Stomach-Sleepers are commonly most comfortable on medium-firm to firm mattresses because there is enough support to elevate the hips and keep them afloat. Its highly recommended that Stomach-Sleepers avoid soft mattresses to prevent hyperextending your lumbar area.
