12.01.2022 Dr Adele here with some #wednesdaywisdom so you can #learnsomethingnew ~ ~ Do you know how often I hear You’re a marine biologist, what kind of fish is that? ...First of all there are over 1,500 species of fish on the Great Barrier Reef. Second, I’m an expert in sponges. Yep, got my PhD on sponges. ~ ~ And I’m going to say it. I LOVE SPONGES. ~ ~ See this beautiful picture of a coral reef taken by the incredibly talented @nadia.aly.photo well just about everything you see that is colourful is a sponge. Healthy coral is a drab olive green to brown. Sponges are what make the reef colourful. ~ ~ Sponges wear their colours loud and proud. It’s mostly warning colouration, they are highly toxic to put off predators. Like fish and turtles. ~ ~ Yes my friends you read that right, the main diet of Hawksbill turtles are sponges. ~ ~ But sponges are cool for so many other reasons. ~ ~ They are the biological filters of our planet. They pump water through their bodies to filter out and consume bacteria and other plankton less than 3 microns in size. ~ ~ They process the water over an entire coral reef EVERY single day removing 99% of the bacteria and other small particles. Humans can’t make a filter that efficient. ~ ~ If you wanted to use them as a natural filter to keep your swimming pool clean you would need to put 1 every square meter and your pool would need to be 15 meters deep to keep them alive. ~ ~ A coral reef is so much more than coral and big fish. But you have to stop and look closely to see all the creatures that make it up. ~ ~ So my friends, what is your favourite thing in this photo. If you don’t know what it is describe it in the comments and I’ll let you know what it is and some fun facts. See more

01.01.2022 Edmund Banfield's home on Dunk Island - 1908. "In 1897, suffering from work anxiety and exhaustion, and advised by doctors that he had just six months to live, ...writer Edmund James Banfield moved to Dunk Island with his wife Bertha so becoming the island's first white settlers. Previously a journalist and senior editor with the Townsville Daily Bulletin for fifteen years, Banfield let the tranquillity of this unspoilt tropical paradise weave its magic and he lived on Dunk Island for the remaining 26 years of his life until his death in 1923. A small hut built with the assistance of an Aborigine called Tom was the Banfields' first home. Over a period of time they cleared four acres of land for a plantation of fruit and vegetables.
