25.01.2022 One of our greatest concerns about beekeeping in tropical Australia is the possibility of varroa mite entering our country and impacting the health of our honeybee colonies. Asian honey bees (Apis Cerana) are a natural host for the varroa mite. The concern is that varroa mite may move across to European honey bees (Apis Mellifera). An incursion of Asian honey bees was first discovered in Cairns in 2007, efforts were made to eradicate them but government made the call that they could not be eradicated and they were declared as an established pest in the area. Asian honey bees have spread as far south as Tully. We don't want to have to adopt treatments to our hives so are hoping that Asian honey bees don't proceed any further south and that efforts continue to destroy any colonies that are found.
24.01.2022 After school jobs.... assembling corflute nucleus hive boxes.
23.01.2022 Buying local, raw honey is a particularly powerful way to boost your personal health and support the bee population. Besides helping to knockout allergies, bu...ying honey from a nearby beekeeper promotes agriculture. In fact, about one-third of the food we eat relies on bees for pollination. . #buylocal #localhoney #bee2u #sustainability #provenance #healthyoption #polinators See more
22.01.2022 Where a lot of the Mackay fresh local produce comes together each week.... the Greater Whitsunday Farmers' Market on Wednesday's from 7am til 11am at Blue Water Quay in Mackay
21.01.2022 I have some bees on pumpkin pollination and the crop is coming along nicely. Insect pollination is critical for good fruit set on pumpkins as they have separate male and female flowers.
21.01.2022 The Bees have been social distancing from the trees lately, things have been a bit grim, Lachlan gave me a hand to move a truck and trailer load last night, got into bed at 11pm and up early to unload, bees were flying well this morning, I might need to get some retraining to use the extraction plant .....
20.01.2022 Had a visit today from a retired commercial beekeeper who designed the first self levelling split boom loader in the 1970's and was an original Capilano shareholder. Was interesting talking to him about commercial beekeeping 50 years ago.
17.01.2022 We attended the ‘Bring Your Land to Life Field Day’ at Finch Hatton, presented by Reef Catchments Mackay, today and Paul spoke about bees, beekeeping and the importance of Native Australian and European Honeybees to food production , the environment and life. A very informative event for those looking to grow food their own food and sustainably manage their land. Thanks Tegan McBride and Reef Catchments for the invitation to speak.
16.01.2022 I delivered Honey Providore's new truck up to Cairns over the weekend, Lachlan came with me, and he had to try on the bee suit, the mascot for Graham's business. Lachlan also had fun driving the Avant loader.
15.01.2022 We are reminiscing about our time more than a year ago with one of Central Queensland’s award-winning tourism events the Isaac Regional Council St Lawrence Wetl...ands Weekend Greater Whitsunday Food Network Inc Seafood Dining Experience 2019. Reef Catchments is committed to helping our producers improve their sustainability as well as the surrounding environments. Our ongoing relationship with the Greater Whitsunday Food Network means we can share stories of where our food comes from with foodies. What better way to get to appreciate our environment than to share food with friends, eating the food of our region and hearing stories of how it was, grown, raised and caught. We’re so grateful to the supporters, organising committee, our special guests, industry stakeholders and the community of St Lawrence and surrounding areas for their continued work and efforts in making the #OurIsaac Coast amongst the best. Thanks to everyone who contributed Matt Golinski - Official, Nic Flack at The Flackyard, Katrina Drew, Michelle Cross 9th Lane Grind, Glen Barret, students of Mackay North State High School, Sarina Sugar Shed, Andrea Cantwell Coffee Service Packaging, Black Duck Kitchens, SunRice, Glenys Mansfield, Christine Wilson, Wendy King, Amanda Lavarak, Tegan McBride, Viv Coleman, Juliane Kasiske, Jac Kotzé. Thanks to the producers Australian Prawn Farms Pty Ltd, ABC Produce (Bowen), Bedford Park Pork, Ben Coyne, Cindy Ellis, Dave Hunter, Eungella Finger Limes, Eungelladale Dairy, Freckle Farm, Fresh As Sweet As, Goanna Brewing, Holistic Pantry, Leo Erbacher & Wade Easdale (Proserpine), Oaky Creek Limes, Phantom Produce (Bowen), Nannu Johnny's Farm, New Reefs Hydroponics, Sarina Sugar Shed, Shorefresh Seafood, Inc., TH Produce (Giru) and of course the Greater Whitsunday Farmers' Market. Thanks to Jac at Flow Motion Media for capturing the fun and creating this video to share with everyone. This event was a joint initiative of the Greater Whitsunday Food Network Inc, Isaac Regional Council, and Reef Catchments through funding from the Australian Government National Landcare Program. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said it was with a heavy heart to cancel this for 2020 due to COVID-19. But we are in extraordinary times and these decisions must be made I’m sure we can all appreciate and understand. We will be back bigger than ever in 2021 with St Lawrence Wetland Weekend cross fingers - and to ensure that and our daily lives return, I encourage you to listen to the health advice being provided by Queensland Health and the Australian Government’s Department of Health.
15.01.2022 CONTENT WARNING: This video contains discussion about suicide. There's also some strong language. The stigma around talking about mental health is proving ...deadly in rural australia - particularly with young men. Mary O'Brien is the powerhouse behind Are you bogged mate?, and she's making change where it matters. Watch the full story this Sunday on Landline. 14.01.2022 Father and son’s took the opportunity on Father’s Day to move their nucleus hives into full size hives. Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there. We hope that if you are not able to see your Dad today you are able to connect by phone or reminisce about special times spent together in the past.

09.01.2022 If you are ever up in North Qld , particularly Ayr, visit the Catholic Church there. This hive has been there for at least 12 years that I know of. I believe they tried to move it on, but it returned, must be something attractive there, as it is exposed to the elements, maybe JC is a beekeeper
09.01.2022 I was invited to talk to year 9 and 10 Agriculture students at Mackay State High School today. Hopefully I inspired a couple of kids to maybe look at beekeeping as a career. These kids showed alot of interest and asked some good questions.
08.01.2022 Sounds about right

05.01.2022 Craig and Thomas are now beekeepers, picked up their first nuc hives and gave them a bit of training at the beeyard today. Best of luck boys, have alot of other newbies to help out in the coming months.
02.01.2022 In late June 2020, the network issued a media release telling the story of how we have recorded dramatic increases in retail sales at the weekly farmers' mark...et with foot traffic more than doubling since the coronavirus pandemic emerged back in March. Four months down the track these new patterns of behaviour seem to have stuck. Even on a rainy Wednesday morning, more than 700 shoppers came through the market and several stallholders sold out of produce. The Mackay Farmers' Market is such a beautiful showcase of our Members, what they stand for, their values and principles the desire to grow and create products to nourish people with wholesome seasonal goodness. The Network and Members’ love for agriculture, the earth, our heritage and the produce and products created and available in our region is what makes our Greater Whitsunday Food Network so amazing and viable in the long-term. By continuing to collaborate, plan for a more sustainable future, together we will become stronger, sustainable, and resilient. . . . #farmersmarket #agritourism #buylocal #freshproduce #provenance #artisan #homemade
