24.01.2022 Since we began 27 years ago we have been serious about not using plastic ourselves in the business wherever it can be physically avoided, using only glass paper tin or cardboard never plastic packaging. The same applies to the mail order packaging we use only cardboard and recycled cornstarch bubbles ( thanks Fullers Bookshop and Natures Works we love you) We hated using bubble wrap ( had to because of the glass) even though we recommended reuse, and so were delighted when we... found the environmental piece de resistance and it was acquired in 2017: our Hal 2001 ( ) cardboard shredder which enables us to produce our own packing materials from cardboard box waste! This is Jenny our very own in house treasure trying it out with me when it arrived: we were beside ourselves as you can tell by the audio Very proud of her and our environmental record Please note Australia post have introduced 80% recycled plastic satchels for small deliveries which can be recycled at the Red Recycle bin at Woolworths and Coles nationwide. They are working on a compostable satchel which is great news, See more

24.01.2022 So we got to the finish lineWe are very glad to say that we have survived this year of turmoil without losing one staff member thanks to you, our valued clients so a big thank you to you all, we simply would not have been around for nearly 30 years without you As you can see we are a multicultural business happily welcoming members of the growing Nepali community here, indeed enjoying delicious Nepalese momo dumplings for our Xmas morning tea feast: my fave! After a year of... turmoil we do hope that you are with your loved ones and hold them close: people are what matters most. Our thoughts are with those in the USA and especially my home country of the UK which are not enjoying the free life we currently have here. 23.01.2022 Its hard to imagine the onerous and hellish routine and time required to achieve this now hilarious look in the early 60s; By 1964, hairspray was the leading beauty product in beauty product sales, reports Victorian Sherrow in the "Encyclopedia of Hair." During these decades, women would spray their hair heavily and then leave it untouched until it needed to be combed out and washed. The lacquer in the spray was so sticky that the floors of beauty salons and home bathrooms... became quite tacky Ewwww! I remember working in a factory sorting toothpaste caps when I was 16, and Ruby the tea lady (who smoked continuously whilst preparing your ham roll) had a massive beehive like this held together with globs of hairspray and burnished gold at the front with nicotine She proudly said that she washed and restyled her hair once a month whether she needed it or not Any yes second from the left is Dolly Parton https://www.leaf.tv/arti/the-history-of-hairspray-products/

21.01.2022 Meet the Soap and Shampoo hero, Allen Sculthorpe This is an illuminating tale of the unexpected twists and turns of life. Allen had spent his life running his hardware store in the south of the state, a staunch and vital figure in his community, until rapacious developers came along and put paid to that Older people like Allen-in his mid sixties- with their wealth of knowledge, tenacity and old school commitment are joyfully the mainstay of our business ( actually we have... grown old together over the past 27 years weve been in business!)and he demonstrated that in spades, when his daughter in law Amy brought him in one day ( 4?5? Years ago?) to fix something which is his forte. He never left and is with my other eight treasured staff one of our most incredible workers. Alan said that he loves his work: but if you had told me 10 years ago Id be making tens of thousands of bars of soap and shampoo I would have thought you were mad New life, steep learning curve but a bloody good bloke that we cant do without: its all good eh Maureen Sculthorpe? 20.01.2022 We are pleased to have the opportunity to donate our soap to support front line staff with their hand hygiene needs: offering a way to bust those pesky bugs, but cleanse and moisturise with natural bar soap ( the hand washing hero product!)instead of drying their hands with commercial liquids which they have to use repeatedly at work. This is our lovely mail order queen Alin that we are lucky enough to have on staff from the Nepalese community locally that is thankfully growin...g and thriving She is packing donated soap for our Healthcare workers (through the Department of Health) in the RHH and other Tasmanian public hospitals, and COVID-affected communities throughout Tasmania (through Salvation Army who are putting together hampers) We will keep it coming: Thank you all so much for your support too with 9 families still directly supported locally See more

19.01.2022 Woke to find the beautiful musician Bill Withers has died. Brought me to tears Vale Bill: soundtrack to my life, have always loved his music and has always been on high rotation wherever Ive been in the world. His beautiful lyrics and warm expressive voice just bathed me in musical honey This track seems very apposite for now: a paean to the times we find ourselves in. Love you Bill please enjoy his music on your streaming music channel it is uplifting and beautiful.... #allinthistogether https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=qkaexjc-1os

19.01.2022 Isnt this a fantastic idea? Even better if they are fruit trees but some people might find that a bit weird I think it could be lovely going there and gathering what some would regard as sacred fruit

18.01.2022 So we thought: how can we help you to get your goodies here in Hobart if our store is closed ( temporarily due to Covid 19)? We thought of a courier perhaps but realised that believe it or not AusPost is a great option locally too! Currently, were offering the following postage options to Hobart using AusPost: Standard (usually 1-2 business days) is $5 flat rate, or free for purchase more than $75 Express (usually overnight) is $10 flat rate.... So shop online and go for it! You are directly supporting 10 local families and we appreciate it

17.01.2022 This is a fantastic example of migrants bringing skills to our island where we seriously struggle to find the skills we need; we are proud to be a multinational/ multicultural employer: 3 wonderful skilled and new migrant Nepalese, a an 11 year veteran Chinese/ Indonesian, a Thai, a Brit ( me) and an American, plus of course our native Tasmanians, making for a wonderful mix of cultures each bringing something special to the workplace. Very proud of them all and go Michael in this fantastic enterprise featured in this ABC link.

15.01.2022 This is amazing: imagine being an archaeologist and being able to see actual fingerprints of a 2000 year old Roman in this face cream? This cream would have been made to the formula invented by Galen, Greco-Roman philosopher/ doctor in the 9th century BC, with beeswax, olive oil and rose water, which my grandmother used to make her remedies, and in turn is still the basis of our moisture creams that I began making nearly 30 years ago. Am I alone in finding this discovery impossibly romantic, linking the simple but comforting action of applying the same cream, as a Roman woman would have done thousands of years ago? Mindblowing https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/jul/28/artsnews.london

15.01.2022 Whilst all human activity has to come to a standstill in Victoria due to the virus, the bees and their caretakers are making sure that the almonds you love are still pollinated. Big love to the people that make this possible and the bees

15.01.2022 Beautiful productive invaluable bee we salute you, on World Bee Day, dear little critters! Without you mankind would not be able to feed itself, and salutations too to beekeepers worldwide who gently harness that immense power to provide us with that perfect food, honey and beeswax...which for thousands of years has provided light to the world in candle form, and truly provides the best skincare ingredient in the world https://youtu.be/IM0wC8twc7A

14.01.2022 Happy birthday to the visionary founder, and fearless leader of Beauty and the Bees, Jill Saunders! 27+ years ago, Jill had the mission to make natural skincare and haircare products in Tasmania that were good for the skin and hair, and did not harm the environment. That mission is still very much the heart and soul of Beauty and the Bees today.... We still hand make our beautiful natural products in Glenorchy, Tasmania. We still use glass jars, tins, paper boxes to package our products, never compromise to the "convenience" of plastic. Happy birthday, Jill! Thank you for your unwavering ethos. Thank you for being a wonderful leader to all of your employees. From all the grateful 15 staff members of Beauty and the Bees *PS peeps I did not post this myself which would have been very weird, Lani my staff member kindly did, I just put in a more recent pic

14.01.2022 So we have reached 8001 likes! This is apparently pretty significant in social media land, but as I am officially old, my old fashioned view on this is that we must be doing something right that people like: that in itself makes me happy. Better still two women won the Nobel prize for some mind blowing science this week: THAT deserves 10 million likes https://www.theguardian.com//scientists-win-nobel-chemistr

08.01.2022 Happy new year BB peeps! This is the peak Leatherwood honey season and our fabulous beekeepers are hard at it, on the wild and remote west coast of Tasmania. Aren’t Leatherwood flowers beautiful? So grateful to this hardworking family for the very best, pristine honey and wax in the world ...,indeed 12 BB families thrive because of their hives.. boom tish, couldn’t help myself

08.01.2022 Its interesting really. This business turned out to be my lifes work: little did I know it at the time when I started, a new migrant with $200 to my name, pictured on my first day at Salamanca 27 years ago ( with a new pal Vilma Hall)I just had hope, the ability to work very very hard, optimism, and as an autistic person( discovered 3 years ago at 61) it was my special interest so had drive and creativity agogo! Some would say that art is all external: on walls and sculpted.... My art is in a jar, equally carefully composed, and when feedback like this is recieved it makes 27 years of uphill struggle worthwhile. I think Steve Jobs ( see link to his Stamford address below) reinforced the philosophy that finding what you love is key in life. A beautiful read. My love is a simple flower called Calendula What a wonderful product this Honey & Olive moisturiser is. I cant speak highly enough of it....after many many years of buying other products for my dry, sensitive skin, Ive finally found gold. Its perfect, smells beautiful and glides very easily and gently onto the skin. Thank You Beauty and the Bees. 07.01.2022 Nice piece from Hobart City Council’s Facebook page Hello Hobart I think I am turning into a Cabbage Patch doll

06.01.2022 This is a very interesting Guardian post: I am 64 in 10 days and began to go grey at the sides of my hair a few years ago, but remain firmly and lushly brunette mostly: I have used our shampoo bars for 25 years and am sure that is why.But I observe this natural ageing with interest and fascination not the horror that it seems to provoke in most women as they get older. It happens! Its interesting that the same kind of pressure to remain unnaturally coloured with toxic dye also applies to the bodies and style of women that go fully grey: universally stylish thin and bony. No fat chicks thanks, the same fascism in the fashion world applies as you grey!! How do yall feel about this? https://www.theguardian.com//i-fought-ageing-hard-before-d

05.01.2022 Maybe Im showing my age ( and my lifelong love of perfume) but this kind of coin operated perfume dispenser was always in the loos of pubs when I was very young, and I used to save my pocket money, and when allowed into the pub -to ostensibly get a packet of crisps- sneaked into the ladies to get a squirt of perfume. The first one went into my eyes as I had dragged a chair over to reach but of course it was not the right height! Stung like hell but I was addicted Have been... a perfume addict ever since! Note the choice of Chanel Tweed, Tabu ( a great perfume in those days before numerous ever cheaper reformulations) and Yardley Lavender. Not sure which one I picked.. but in any case it is a lifelong love, leading to currently developing ( massive excitement) our own classic BB perfume...about 4 months to go And yes: still have a bottle of Yardleys Lavender See more

04.01.2022 Many of you may not be old enough to remember the film Love Story that came out in 1970, but I was 14 and it was an impossibly romantic sob fest this article shows Ali McGraw at 80 odd years now: she still has that luminosity that made her famous Age is not to be feared: indeed my brand is all about feeling comfortable in your skin, not interested in the wrinkle free rubbish. 03.01.2022 We could have retired rich people if, over the past month or so we had given in and made a hand sanitiser product inhouse for the thousands of requests we recieved: but we made the decision straight away when this horrible virus appeared that we could not and would not do so. 01.01.2022 At this time when even the most innocent tickle is regarded with horror its great to know that honey is one of the most potent weapons in the home pharmacy. My grandmother would bury a sliced onion, with herbs like thyme and oregano in a pot of honey, and use a spoonful of this every day to keep us well in winter when coughs and colds were prevalent: we very rarely got sick. Leatherwood is an incredibly powerful rainforest honey that would be an even better standby https://...www.beebeauty.com.au//pure-tasmanian-leatherwood-/ https://www.theguardian.com//honey-better-treatment-for-co
