14.01.2022 The Beechmont Gigabit Fibre story has made it to the publication Comms Day of 23 October 2020. Dumped into the too hard basket by NBN Co the job is now open for other licenced carriers to come up with proposals. Looks like the Gold Coast Municipality’s data department is now mentioning bringing their fibre network to the Western side of the M1. https://broadband.beechmont.org.au

As a small family run business we would not have ...gotten through these past few months without it.. Although it is still early stages of recovery and important to not become complacent, it is so nice to see many more locals exploring their own backyards more and supporting small businesses like ours. Beechmont as a community has suffered since the bushfires last September and there is still a long road ahead. However for those that are unaware there are now 3 cafes on the mountain, countless beautiful air bnbs, horse riding, paragliding and top wedding venues Perfect for a weekend away or just a day trip! Check out some of the other local businesses here and please know your support doesn’t go unnoticed and is helping small local businesses and families. @scenicrimequinegroup Binna Burra KitchenThe Nook and Kranny Cafe, Pizza and Bar @paratechparagliding @mysterymountain_farmstay Rosewood Estate @the_providence_farm_hall P.S. 08.01.2022 Beechmont and Skymuster Plus As you most likely already know by now, Beechmont won’t get any Gigabit fibre to the home from our National Broadband Network Corpo...ration (NBNCo). We were already thrown into the Fixed Wireless basket a few years ago, but even that turned out to be a bridge too far for NBNCo by the time their network had to be declared as completed at the end of FY20. So, instead we won’t get any terrestrial broadband service but can now order a satellite service from NBNCo just like the farmers in the outback, most of which live too far away from anything and simply cannot get anything else. In Beechmont there are some options. If your landline to one of the Beechmont Telstra Exchanges or the Telstra extension box in Akoonah drive is not too long then you can still get a reasonably reliable ADSL2 service. And because NBN doesn’t offer a landline service, your existing phone/ADSL line is not going away anytime soon. It will probably be with us forever and a day, or until some other technology provider shows up on the mountain with a good solution. Don’t hold your breath for that. Your ADSL line is usually fast enough to provide you with Netflix or Disney and the likes. Only needs about 5 Mbps for standard high definition television. 4K television won’t work. That needs 25 Mbps. A big plus point is that you can get ‘Unlimited’ data plans on ADSL so the speed won’t be cut down if you watched a few too many movies within the month. Besides that you would have an Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) phone service which will still work when the mains power is down in Beechmont and your mobile phone batteries have ran out. Not that this happens every second day to us, but if you have lived in Beechmont for a while you know that we live at the end of a single high voltage power line. Storms, cyclones, fires and other dramas do take out the line every now and then and it can take a while to get fixed. The last big outage took a week or so. The Telstra exchanges have batteries and diesel generators to keep them going. The latest satellite offering from NBN is called SkyMuster Plus. A great improvement over the previous standard SkyMuster because it is a layer 3 service which does no longer depend on the backhaul capacity and CVC of the retail ISP. Sort of cuts out the middleman if it comes to traffic capacity. NBN throws the traffic direct from their satellite ground station into the nearest Internet Exchange. In addition, certain traffic types including email and social networks are unmetered. That means all you can eat. However, streaming audio and video (like Disney, YouTube and Netflix), and VPN traffic is metered. When you reach your quota before the month is up then your speed will be severely slowed down. Soo much that watching movies is out. The non-metered services like social networks and email are not slowed down so you could still see some shorter Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or TikTok movies but hour long feature films are out. Until the next months quota kiks in or you open your purse to buy more GigaBytes from your ISP. Retail subscription fees and contract conditions vary widely by retail ISP. Do your homework before picking one. Keep in mind that service provision in Beechmont is like most Gold Coast plumbers, electricians and other trades tell you: Ohhh, you live out there? We need to bring a packed lunch then. Today we are blessed with technology which can use multiple data feeds. And if you run a business from home or just don’t want to be without Internet then look at so-called multi-WAN routers which can combine ADSL, satellite and multiple 4G connections (from Telstra and Optus) into one unbreakable feed. In many places 4G can be picked up with a roof antenna for a steady and reliable feed. Do some testing and figure out what is best for you. And after all, buy yourself a little computer UPS to power the modems, routers and wifi boxes so when we have a mains power failure you are not immediately disconnected and out of business. These small UPS boxes are designed to power a desktop computer for 15 minutes or so to do a controled shutdown, but if used for a modem or a router/wifi box they last for many hours longer because modems and routers don’t use a lot of power. The going rates for retail SkyMuster Plus 25/5 Mbps connections are (incl GST): 50 GigaByte/month - $ 50/month 100 GigaByte/month - $ 70/month 150 GigaByte/month - $ 90/month 200 GigaByte/month - $ 120/month 300 GigaByte/month - $ 180/month The going rate for Zone 2 POTS/ADSL fixed line services are (incl GST): Unlimited data on ADSL with phone line hire Phone calls pay as you go - bundle $ 93/month Unlimited data on ADSL on an existing working phone line by Telstra - ADSL subscription only $ 60/month The going rate for Optus 4G data only connections (incl GST): - 200 GigaByte/month - byo modem/wifi - no contract $ 50/month - 200 GigaByte/month - free modem/wifi with 12 month contract - $ 50/month - 500 GigaByte/month - free modem with 12 months contract - $ 80/month Goto https://www.vantagebroadband.com.au/satellite for more details Or ring 07 5551 0117 during Gold Coast business hours to book a free of charge consultation at your home or by phone.

08.01.2022 Yesterday’s markets were our biggest yet and we have you to thank! See you all next on August 16th.

08.01.2022 As we near the end of what has been another challenging year for many in the Scenic Rim community, I would like to wish everyone a merry and safe Christmas and ...a prosperous 2021. Following the devastating bushfires of 2019, many of us had looked forward to a less eventful year, however 2020 was not all that we had hoped, bringing the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19 with its social and economic impacts. While our region has weathered floods, droughts and bushfires, COVID-19 has brought on a unique set of circumstances for our community that has tested our adaptability and our determination to overcome. One of the great lessons of this COVID-19 year has been the importance of family, friends and the need for strong community connections. Although, the great irony of COVID-19 has been that the best way we could stick together was to maintain a little distance to keep everyone safe. As we emerge from the restrictions of COVID-19, many of us have a new appreciation of being able to connect with family and friends in social situations. This will make this festive season even more special. The events of this year have reminded us of the importance of pausing to take time and reflect on what is most important in life. This Christmas, especially, we are reminded of the great gift we have in our families and communities. The way we treat each other and communicate with one another says a great deal about the character that we bring to our community. This year has shown us that this is a time for open hearts and open minds. I have been proud of the way individuals, business operators and members of community across our region have pulled together to support one another through a very difficult year. I have been impressed by the innovation shown by so many in adapting to the challenges of COVID-19 while continuing our community’s bushfire recovery journey. Whatever your plans for the Christmas-New Year period, Denise and I would like to wish you and your loved ones an enjoyable time of fellowship and that you are looking forward to, as much as we are, the best that 2021 can bring.
