16.01.2022 MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GREG CHRISTENSEN CHAIR OF LOCAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT GROUP Good afternoon Scenic Rim ... As we know, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES has declared a Local Fire Ban from today, and as we approach the weekend, which is a time when we usually get our household chores done, it's time to reconsider the necessity of some of these. It's often activities like angle grinding, welding, mowing lawns and slashing grass that can cause fires on total fire ban days. So I urge you to please reschedule these activities to a time when the weather is less conducive to fire risks. Also if you're out on motorbikes on dirt roads, stones and rocks can flick together and start a fire in the wrong conditions, so consider this if you're out on a recreational bike ride. All of us have part to play to keep our communities safe by thinking before we act. Stay safe. Greg

15.01.2022 COUNCIL’S ADVOCACY PLAN HAS BUY-IN FROM LOCAL BUSINESS Scenic Rim Regional Council’s call for Queensland Government funding for a Canungra Town bypass has the buy-in of local businesses and the community. The Canungra Town bypass is one of 10 key issues outlined in the Scenic Rim’s Ten Point Advocacy Plan for which Council is seeking support from political parties and local candidates in the lead-up to the October 2020 Queensland state election.... Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Council is calling for the Queensland Government to support the bypass, with a business case, design and preservation of the proposed road corridor by 2024 and construction by 2032. The rapid growth of the neighbouring Gold Coast, and the acceleration of the Bromelton State Development Area, means the east-west corridor which runs through Canungra is coming under increasing pressure, he said. Increased heavy vehicle traffic in the Canungra township not only poses significant risks for pedestrians and motorists but also the amenity of the town centre for locals and visitors alike. The current east-west corridor is also inefficient for long-haul freight movements and the expansion of Canungra’s residential footprint, particularly in the absence of meaningful public transport, means this corridor is also under growing pressure from commuter traffic. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President Monique Morcus welcomed Council’s advocacy for the bypass to alleviate congestion in the town centre. The majority of our members have, for a long time, expressed concerns about the increasing traffic through the township, particularly heavy vehicles passing the primary school and cafes, at times making it impossible to hear a conversation, she said. Some local residents have expressed concerns about the current traffic in town and advised that they no longer shop local because of it, which is having an impact on some of the businesses. We want to encourage visitors to Canungra by reducing the noise and congestion that we are currently experiencing and feel that people who wish to stop and enjoy everything Canungra has to offer will have time to do so, and have a much more pleasant experience, if the through traffic is bypassed. Cr Christensen said the future growth and prosperity of the Scenic Rim hinged on issues, such as the Canungra Town bypass, prioritised in Council’s advocacy plan. "We are asking, through our advocacy plan, for Queensland Government to commit to 10 key priority areas to show Scenic Rim residents that they matter just as much as their urban neighbours, he said. Eight of the 10 issues identified in the advocacy plan are major infrastructure projects that are desperately needed to meet the Scenic Rim’s forecast future growth. "We need our local candidates and major political parties to support these issues that affect the lives of our residents and the future of local businesses.

12.01.2022 Council supports long-term sustainability of Minto Crag 23 November 2020 At today's Ordinary Meeting, Scenic Rim Regional Council agreed not to accept the Department of Natural Resources and Mines offer of a trusteeship of land where Minto Crag is located unless the cultural significance was recognised.... Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Council wanted to ensure that should Council accept the trusteeship, there would need to be an agreed transition process to vest oversight to the local Ugarapul people. "Minto Crag is a significant geological feature located south west of Boonah and has become a focal point for rock climbers in recent times," he said. "This has caused significant concern within the community about the impacts of such use and the long-term sustainability of the area. "Council undertook many conversations before coming to today's decision following concerns raised by adjoining property owners, and local community and Indigenous groups about climbing routes being established on the main rock face, which were causing damage to the rockface. "While the site is attractive to the rock climbing fraternity, and could potentially bring many visitors to the region, we must ensure we maintain the cultural and environmental integrity of the site. "I believe it is significant to recognise that Indigenous lore prohibits climbing of the rock." Division 5 Councillor Marshall Chalk echoed the Mayor's sentiments. "The area has been a sacred site for local Indigenous people and it also shelters important flora and fauna," he said. Current local land holders and those over the past 150 years have preserved Minto Crag and it has remained untouched for all this time. "We recognise the significance of Minto Crag and believe it's not in Council's or ratepayers' best interests to take on the land as trustees unless there is the appropriate oversight given to the local Ugarapul people. "In any case, we will advocate for its future, and will support the Department and local environmental and Indigenous groups regarding the long-term environmental and cultural sustainability and preservation of Minto Crag for future generations." 03.01.2022 Communication with community a priority for Council 23 November 2020 At today's Ordinary Council Meeting, Council adopted its first ever communication strategy to help guide its conversations with Scenic Rim communities over the next three years.... Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the Scenic Rim Regional Council Communication Strategy 2020-23 took on board feedback from the community "As part of our Customer Centricity Project, our communities told us that we should be listening and communicating better in order to develop deeper partnerships," he said. "With more than 43,000 people calling the Scenic Rim home, as well as 4,500 businesses, we know it is important for us to communicate effectively about the programs and services we provide, which are also are building community wellbeing and prosperity. "This Communication Strategy is our promise that we will be more transparent and keep our communities updated on what we are doing, and importantly, that we will also listen to feedback. "We recognise in the past we have missed opportunities in our communication and engagement with our communities, and we know we need to resolve that. "It's important our communities are aware of, and satisfied with, the programs and services we deliver each and every day to make the Scenic Rim a better place to live, and that they understand our decisions." Chief Executive Officer Jon Gibbons said the communication strategy was critical to how we communicate with current and potential residents, ratepayers, business owners, investors, other levels of government, community groups and our employees. "It's not just about keeping our communities informed, but also increasing their knowledge about key themes and issues that affect them every day," he said. "A key part of the strategy will be to improve our internal processes and increase our information flows within Council, which over time will have a positive domino effect in our community. "Essentially, the strategy belongs to all of us within Council as we are all delivering for our communities and have something to contribute that will improve our communication. "We know there's some changes to make, however with the strategy's clear action plan, I'm confident our communities will see a definite improvement over the life of the strategy."
