24.01.2022 First removal of the season thanks to Elliot for getting in touch with me to help relocate these ladies
24.01.2022 The fatal consequence of transferring a stingless bee colony into a hive box without capturing enough workers. The story of this colony is revealed in the struc...tures remaining. First note the open brood cells (red), the adult bees emerged from these with the help of the existing workforce. So far, so good. But also see the closed brood cells (orange) containing dead pupae which failed to emerge because there were not enough workers to remove the cell walls. Also present are the young brood built (blue) after the transfer of the colony, proving a queen was initially present and the colony had the potential to succeed. But it went into a downward spiral of disorder due to the inadequate population of working adults. See more

08.01.2022 Adults of the hive syrphid fly, Ceriana ornata, a pest of stingless bee hives, is easily recognized as it is a superb wasp mimic. It is strongly oriented to hiv...es, but here gets driven away by a guard bee when it nears the entrance. Adults do not enter nests but lay their eggs in cracks and the larvae crawl in. See more
