20.01.2022 The best known bee in Australia is the yellow-brown commercial Honey Bee (Apis mellifera). This is not a native bee, even though it sometimes goes wild and builds nests in our bushland. This bee was introduced to Australia from Europe in about 1822 to produce honey for our pioneers. Australia is home to over 1700 species native to our beautiful country and only 11 of those species are stingless! Yes not all bees sting! They come in a startling array of colours and range from 2 to 26 mm in size. One type of stingless be is the Social Native Stingless Bee. Otherwise known as Tetragonula and Austroplebeia.
