15.01.2022 On Back Breathing The year was 1938 when Allan Lindquest met Flagstad. He said in one of my lessons, "I became extremely curious about all of the world-class si...ngers coming from Sweden and I wanted to know more." Because his first language was Swedish, he wrote letters to famous singers in his native tongue. In 1938, people mainly communicated through letter writing and it was unusual to hear from an American who wrote in Swedish so well. In that short interview in 1938, right before her American tour, Flagstad (who was Norwegian but spoke Swedish) shared some of her own personal ideas about technique in singing. One concept that she especially touted was the idea of mainly breathing in the back. You can read more about Flagstad in John Vogt's book, "Flagstad Singer of the Century", published in the 1980's. Exercise: Santa Barbara, CA / 1979 During my study with Lindquest, I had the privilege to watch him teach for many hours. This was how I learned so much from him, plus I listened to a recording of his teaching every day for about 18 years. My friend Martha Rosacker was having a lesson one day and she wanted to find more body connection. Lindquest instructed her to exhale, then while leaving the lower abdominal muscles rather flat, breathe mainly into the back ribcage and lower back. He said, "This will release a lower diaphragmatic stretch and you will get both a better compression of breath AND a better release of the small breath stream. Your breath line, or ability to sing longer phrases will increase in length and you will become more confident." This was a fantastic lesson for me to witness. As Lindquest had said, her breath line became longer and the voice achieved a more weightless floating yet efficient quality. Have a great day. David
