12.01.2022 Who's shaking their fermenter to put the oxygen in at yeast pitch? Who's putting oxygen in directly via a tank without diluting it with all the nitrogen and other junk you find in the atmosphere? How long do you slash or bubble for anyway? All the answers lie with a good dissolved oxygen meter, that after several months troubleshooting is finally calibrated to detect 0.00 ppm of Oxygen in a 0% oxygen solution. Give us a shout if you want to see how much 02 you are really giving your yeast at pitch o'clock.

04.01.2022 Here's everything I've learnt about spectrophotometers so far. If you want to do bitterness, (and I do,) you'll need a UV-Vis instead of just a vis spectrophotometer, and that'll roughly double your budget. Australia has a dearth of pre-loved, less than four (or five!) figure spectrophotometers, so it's time for eBay + international shipping on. There's myriad new and cheap Chinese UV-Vis, but look carefully at the wavelength range (bitterness is at 275nm, and base models mig...ht not go that low!) and the wavelength accuracy is often far less than 20-year-old top shelf models. However, vintage spectrophotometers may not be as accurate as when they were new, and can be physically massive, so shipping costs can be horrific. You also run the risk of the unit having no instructions at all, and being generally pre USB and instructions on the internet as a pdf etc. I found the best compromise was to buy second hand from the states. Newish models - I ended up with a scruffy but absolutely functional BioRad Smart Spec Plus, that takes a single cuvette only - are extremely cheap compared to the rest of the globe, but read the fine print carefully, you'll have to budget on a voltage transformer if it turns up and it's 110V only. You'll need to budget for accessories, like centrifuges (those that take 30ml test tubes are dirt cheap, proper 50ml lab ones are not cheap at all)and the reagents to do certain testing (like IBU and VDK) can be seriously expensive, and dangerous/impossible to ship. Splash out on quartz cuvettes, plastic is going to throw some readings way off. See more
