21.01.2022 This year we’ve had the opportunity to team up with NRL - National Rugby League & Bundaberg Rum to tell our story about our post fire recovery, Tommy’s role at the Bega Roosters RLFC and how much the Rugby League community means to us. It was a DREAM to work with Hustle Media for this. Thanks guys for your creativity and using your stellar skills to tell our story!

21.01.2022 A small stack of exceptional books about agriculture and food. Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe and Call of the Reed Warbler became favourites as soon as I devoured them. The Ethical Omnivore by Feather and Bone Providore and Sacred Cow by Sustainable Dish - Diana Rodgers, RD are brand new to the collection and I’m so excited to tuck into them soon! What are your favourite/ life changing/ most memorable books? Not necessarily ag related. Love a good book recommendation! ... #regenag #regenerativeagriculture #pasturedeggs #pastureraised #pastureraisedeggs #freerange #poultry #layerhens #begavalleyproduce #locallygrown #begafarmeggs #farmfresheggs #buylocal #localfoodmovement #knowyourfarmer #futurefarmer #localfarmers #smallbusiness #smallscaleag #womeninbusiness #womeninag #farmersforclimateaction #supportlocal #buylocal #bookworm #sacredcow #theethicalomnivore #charlesmassy #callofthereedwarbler #darkemu

20.01.2022 ONE YEAR between photos - swipe to see the comparison What a difference a good start to spring and 12 months of chicken manure can make!!! The farm is bursting with life and so many beautiful shades of green right now. We’re still waiting for the grass to really take off, but with more warm days like we’ve had this week it won’t be long until the pastures are thick and long and we’ll have more than we know what to do with! ... #begavalleyeggs #begavalley #bemboka #regenag #regenerativeagriculture #joelsalatin #pasturedeggs #pasturedpoultry #layerhens #locallygrown #freerange #poultry #localfoodmovement #begavalleyproduce #pambulavillage #bembokavillage #pambulaproduce #womeninfarming #womeninbusiness #womeninag #begafarmeggs #farmfresheggs #smallscaleag #smallbusiness #buylocal #buyfromthebush #emptyesky #farmersforclimateaction

20.01.2022 WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT Our birthday giveaway closed last night and we’ve chosen three winners! THANK YOU to everyone who entered and for your well wishes as we tick over one whole year as full time farmers! What a ride

19.01.2022 Our new flock of girls arrived on the farm today! Their first few days are always a bit stressful as we make sure they’re comfortable and will settle in as quickly as possible. Today’s arrivals are quiet and shy, but soon will have formed a pecking order, know who’s boss and will be used to our presence in the paddock. We think they’re pretty lucky to be living the green life in Bemboka, rather than destined for cages and free range systems like their friends in the grower... shed. We’re gearing up for a busy summer on the coast . . . . #regenag #regenerativeagriculture #pasturedeggs #pastureraised #pastureraisedeggs #freerange #poultry #layerhens #begavalleyproduce #locallygrown #begafarmeggs #farmfresheggs #buylocal #localfoodmovement #knowyourfarmer #futurefarmer #begavalleyeggs #begavalley #visitnsw #bemboka #bembokavillage #smallbusiness #smallscaleag #womeninbusiness #womeninag #farmersforclimateaction #supportlocal #buylocal #emptyesky #buyfromthebush #smallbusiness #smallscaleag #farmweekly

18.01.2022 Thank you Bega District News for sharing our story about our new partnership with Woolworths, and to Woolworths for the incredible opportunity! The reason we’re able to be stocked on the shelves of one of the biggest supermarket chains in the country, is purely because of consumer demand! Thank you for supporting our small family farm! As more and more people are choosing to buy from their local producers, we hope that you know how much impact you have when you choose to bu...y our eggs. You’re creating jobs in our community, supporting our regenerative farming practices and mission to better our little patch of land, choosing high animal welfare standards over a lower priced egg, supporting our stockists who sell our eggs and the couriers who get them there, many of whom are small family businesses themselves, and you’re helping our young family realise our farming dreams. Our customers are the absolute best! Thank you!

18.01.2022 SYDNEY FRIENDS, When we reached out to you in May, you were so eager to buy from our small family farm, and thanks to the support of some lovely families and incredible businesses, since then we’ve been delivering eggs to Sydney on a regular basis. Spring is the most beautiful time of year here on the farm; the weather is perfect for our layer hens who turn up production and gift us with an abundance of eggs! With the days warming up and growing longer, and with local touris...m still non-existent, for the second time this year we find ourselves with a glut. So, we’ve placed our eggs on sale and we’re ramping up our Sydney delivery schedule to have eggs available for delivery to your door from this Tuesday 22nd September. If you’re interested in purchasing a box of 15 dozen of our Premium Pastured Free Range Eggs from our happy hens, please follow the link to purchase. We suspect they’ll be the best eggs you’ve ever tasted. https://www.begavalleyeggs.com.au/buy-eggs/sydney-2907 If you know anyone who loves good, farm fresh food, please pass this note onto them. We appreciate your help in spreading the word https://www.begavalleyeggs.com.au/buy-eggs/sydney-2907

17.01.2022 PART 2 continued from previous post: To people who asked, we said we’d made the decision to take on the house job and move so we could get ahead and buy our own place. We secretly wanted it to be the catalyst to transition Tom into being a full time farmer, which we never said out loud because it felt so huge and ridiculous, and there was no clear path before us Only two months after we moved in, on the day after our son was born, our friends @epicchickenco, the founders of... BVE, dropped us a message saying they’ve got a business opportunity and if we’re interested to give them a call. They were selling their business, and we were the family they thought of to pass the reigns to Next month it’s been ONE WHOLE YEAR since we took over as owners, and one year since Tommy has been a full time farmer! The transition to self-employment was made SO MUCH easier, and maybe only possible, because of that inspired decision we made to up haul our comfortable life the year before, giving us freedom as we didn’t have a big weekly expense tying us down. As the one year anniversary approaches, we’re taking the rest of the month offline and stripping back our chores and to-do lists to try and get some rest before we go full steam ahead into next season and our next mammoth goal. We’ll be back in September with some fun birthday celebrations @ Bemboka, New South Wales, Australia

17.01.2022 TONIGHT MARKS SEVEN MONTHS since bushfires burned through our leased properties, threatening our livestock and turning our business and our world upside down. To the wonderful folk who donated to the pay-it-forward fundraiser we held following the fires, THANK YOU for your generosity and support. THANK YOU for supporting our amazing community of stockists. THANK YOU for helping us back on our feet quicker than we ever could on our own. We were just three months into business... at the time and your generosity literally kept us going!!! Thank you to EVERYONE who supported us by sharing our fundraiser on social media. It ran for 3 months, reached a staggering international audience and exactly ONE THOUSAND generous people raised an incredible $60,000. Together we were able to give $30,000 to our community by gifting eggs to our local stockists, with the remaining $30,000 invested into building our egg grading facility at Bemboka. After Covid and some other minor delays, we finally completed the grading room and were able to move in mid June! As always, it’s been full steam ahead on the farm and we haven’t snapped any photos of the final fit out, but stay tuned and we’ll share some pics on our stories! Being on the receiving end of SO MUCH GENEROSITY has been incredibly humbling, and honestly the best part is that this experience has fuelled our desires to turn our business into a model that can give much, much more to our community and those in need For the new folk here wondering what the fundraiser was all about, you can see news articles from @abcsoutheast @thelandnews @stockandland @begavalleyshire @begavalleyshirelibrary on the In The Mediatab on our website. Again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you! @ Bemboka, New South Wales, Australia

17.01.2022 What a day! We had 150mm of glorious rain by this afternoon and it hasn’t let up yet. It’s still coming down steady outside, the creek is rising and the dams overflowing, the roads are washed out and the boots are soggy, the chooks are happy and we can’t wait to see how the paddocks respond soon

15.01.2022 Just like that, the winter solstice is here! We were really intentional about how to spend the shortest day of the year this weekend I vividly remember 6 months ago at the summer solstice, collapsing, exhausted on the verandah to watch the sun go down after a hectic, 16 hour day of farm chores and wrangling kids. We decided then that by the winter solstice we’d have all the processes on the farm humming smoothly, and we’d spend the day completely differently! I wonder how... we would have felt that day on the verandah if we’d known that in a few weeks time our region and our business would be devastated by bushfires, and then months later the world was shut down because of a virus? Crazy to think! We used today to rest and dream. Tommy only worked 3 hours which feels like such a TREAT! We played in the icy cold river and collected some tiny trinkets to take home and create a nature table to mark this time of rejuvenation and looking inward, a ritual with the kids that is becoming a favourite! We also did a drive by of our dream farm which is absolutely the most enjoyable way to keep focused on the work ahead.

14.01.2022 PART 1: About this time two years ago we were sitting in the lounge room of our old rental home, having a very adult conversation about finances and brainstorming how we were going to buy a farm so we could be full time farmers. We had no direction, but the dream of being farmers strangely felt SO CLOSE. Tom was working as a chippy, I was working a couple of shifts at the bakery and we had a small herd of cross-bred cattle which we were keeping on an incredibly cheap but te...rribly poor lease block. We were getting by but certainly not getting ahead to buy a farm. We had an inspired idea to give up our house and find part time work on a farm in exchange for rent. Rent was our largest expense and we figured if we didn’t have that to pay we might be able to move closer to the farm dream. I’d recently read a story in @pipmagazineau about a family who traveled on bikes, and it sparked the idea to think outside the box about the way we were living a spending. We envisioned doing farm labour and living in the second house on a property, but instead we found a friendly farmer who’s unliveable second house was termite riddled and about to fall down in the wind, and made an arrangement to fix it up in exchange for rent. Tom worked many evenings and every weekend for 8 months, with me as his labourer-side-kick, and turned the crooked old house into a cozy and comfortable home Continued in next post... @ Pambula, New South Wales

13.01.2022 There’s snow falling just over the mountains and today the icy cold wind cut through thick layers of clothes, drying the land more with every gust as we wait, hopeful for rain

13.01.2022 We are on Yuin country. Everyday we look at our landscape and realise how much we do not know about the land we farm. Not only because we’ve only been farming on this property for one year, but because us and our ancestors are relatively new here too. We’ve so much to learn from the traditional owners of this land, and we look forward to creating opportunities in the future to incorporate traditional land management practices into our farming system. We believe it’s our res...ponsibility as farmers to improve the land which we farm, and leave it in better condition to when we arrived. It’s our dream to work with local Indigenous Council and local company Creative Lines to flesh out and bring this vision to life. Until then we’ll continue to read books, listen to the land and learn as much as we can #naidocweek #alwayswasalwayswillbe . . . . #regenag #regenerativeagriculture #pasturedeggs #pastureraised #pastureraisedeggs #freerange #poultry #layerhens #begavalleyproduce #locallygrown #begafarmeggs #farmfresheggs #buylocal #localfoodmovement #knowyourfarmer #futurefarmer

11.01.2022 We had a chat with ABC South East NSW for the ABC Country hour program today. The story we contributed to, which is about how the egg industry and our business has fared during COVID, is nice and short and is at about 32 minutes, if you'd like to plug your ears in and listen Let us know what you think! https://www.abc.net.au//nsw-coun/nsw-country-hour/12728404

10.01.2022 Found these escapees in a nearby gully after they’d followed the sound of the tractor. One reality of keeping pastured chickens is often the ridiculously funny or frustrating (depending on the day ) task of herding opportunistic birds who’ve found a fence down and gone exploring

08.01.2022 This post popped up as a memory I’d shared on my personal page 2 years ago today, which was 12 months before we became farmers ourselves. It reminded me that we’ve been advocating for good and fair prices for farmers since we began shopping at farmers markets in Brisbane in 2009 which was LONG before we put on our egg farmers hats. After 12 months of business, it’s solidified the knowing that these words from Soul Food Farm are absolutely, wholeheartedly true. As in any bus...iness, there are costs and SO MUCH gruelling work on the farm that the customer doesn’t see; like wages for a labour intensive operation and high grain prices after years of drought. There are also so many benefits to paying slightly higher prices for premium, local, family grown produce; like creating jobs for locals, the top notch animal welfare, care for and holistic management of the land. And you get to eat THE BEST eggs! THANK YOU to our customers who continue to support our family farm. We’re so grateful that you choose to spend a few extra dollars on your eggs which allows us to produce the tastiest food for you and create opportunities for our family, staff and business.

08.01.2022 @broganic inspiring us with ridiculously delicious comfort food recipes while the weather is cool. Today we got to personally gobble up her perfectly baked pistachio & lemon zest cookies and they were DIVINE!

06.01.2022 We’ve been on tour to central west NSW this week visiting the Browning Family’s dry land & irrigated cropping farm in Narromine, just near Dubbo. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to be chosen as participants in the Young Farmer Business Program mentoring program this year and over the next 10 months we’ll be working with our AMAZING (!!!!) business coach Richard as well as travelling all over NSW to visit the farms and fishing operations of the other 5 participants. We walked... into BVE 12 months ago with zero business knowledge and experience, so after finding our feet in the paddock and learning business on the job, fine tuning our business skills moved to the top of our priority list. We spent a mammoth day yesterday in a room with a bunch of young, diverse, hard working, inspiring humans, all in different enterprises but with details of their journeys very similar to our own. We’re heading home today SO motivated, with a crystal clear vision of our next steps to take, and we’re so sure that applying for the YFBP is the best business decision we’ve made this year Farming friends, keep your eye on the program for next years intake. It’s mind-blowing good!

06.01.2022 Twice this year, our community has experienced first hand the fragility of the industrial food system, which most of us are accustomed to. What system will we create and support moving forward?

01.01.2022 This time next week our newest flock of hens will arrive on the farm which means by Christmas time we’ll have pullet eggs galore!!! Young hens (named pullets) lay small eggs, but what they lack in size they make up for in the most INCREDIBLE flavour! The yolks are often larger than the whites which makes for the most deliciously creamy scramble, omelettes and desserts! Pullet eggs are our personal favourite at home and we always choose them to bring back to thee house for ...our daily egg consumption. They’re sought out by quality chefs too, but they’re only available for a very limited time! If you’d like a box for yourself for Christmas baking or gifting, let us know and we’ll add you to our wait list. . . . . #freerangeeggs #eggsforsale #pastureraisedeggs #pullets #pulleteggs #farmeggs #eggseggseggs #pasturedeggs #chickeneggs #chickenfarm #farmingpics #eggsforbreakfast #eggsofinstagram #chickensofinstagram #youngfarmers #supportlocalfarms #fresheggsdaily #lifeonthefarm #chickensofig #sustainablefarming #fresheggs #farmland #eggs #hensofinstagram #produce See more
